Remember as the temperatures are warming up here in Colorado
don't forget to schedule your dog's heartworm test.  We are recommending year round heartworm prevention, one tablet every 30 days.  A healthy dog is a happy dog.

                        Poisonous Plants

This is the time of year we all start working in the yard, anticipating spring planting and the blooms and edibles they bring. It's also a time for us to be more aware of the plants our animals may get into and what affect those plants may have on them. We have compiled a list of common poisonous plants for cats and dogs but this is by no means a complete list. There is a great list of plants with pictures at the following website: http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/poison-control/plants/

How Second Hand Smoke Affects Animals

According to the Boulder County Public Health Tobacco Education and Prevention Partnership (TEPP), www.BoulderCountyTobacco.org (Boulder County is currently updating their website & this information will soon be posted there as well)

  • Dogs whose owners smoke are twice as likely to develop cancer
  • If cigarette butts are eaten by a puppy, it can cause death
  • Secondhand smoke can settle on a cat's fur, when the cat cleans itself, it can ingest a large dose of the many chemicals contained in tobacco smoke
  • Cats exposed to secondhand smoke have a higher rate of lymphoma
  • Cats can develop respiratory problems, lung inflammation, and asthma as a result of secondhand smoke
  • Birds can react badly to secondhand smoke and may develop eye problems, as well as respiratory disease and lung cancer
  • Birds that sit on a smoker's hand may experience contact dermatitis from the nicotine that remains on the smoker
  • Smoke residue can be toxic to fish
