Telephone Book Recycling Contest Results
| |
A total of 4,149 old telephone books was collected in the CenturyLink/Keep Greene Beautiful Telephone Book Recycling Contest. Greene Valley Developmental Center collected 1,538 phone books to win first prize of $150, The Boys & Girls Club took second place with 1,079, winning $65, and Roby Senior Center, third with 881, winning $35.

Beef Day Celebration

The Agribusiness Committee is preparing for the Beef Day Celebration, scheduled for Friday, September 14, 6-8 p.m. at the Greene County Fairgrounds Livestock Pavilion. Many contests, entertainment and free beef products to sample will be available as Greeneville and Greene County pay homage to the beef producers. Sponsorships are available. Beef Day is held in conjunction with the 17th Annual Greene County Antique Farm & Auto Show scheduled for September 14-16 at the fairgrounds. Buggin' For A Cure

The Tourism Department is working with the Northeast TN VW Association in preparation for the "Buggin' for a Cure VW Car Show" that will take place September 22-23 at the Greene County Fairgrounds. The event will feature entertainment, dance, crafters, car vendors, games, and VWs from across the southeast. Tourism will have a refreshment booth at the event to raise money for the program. Help Wal-Mart, Help Teachers!

Wal-Mart SuperCenter is assisting the Teacher Supply Depot with a couple of fundraisers! The retail store is currently holding a Penny-A-Vote contest for the favorite school in Greeneville and Greene County and the winning school will receive a $100 Wal-Mart gift card. Proceeds from the contest will be used to purchase school supplies for the depot. Wal-Mart is also conducting a "Stuff the Bus" campaign where patrons can purchase school supplies and deposit them into the "bus" in the lobby area at the entrance of the store. Summer Educator In-Service

The Education & Workforce Development Department hosted its annual summer Educator-In-Service on Thursday, July 26. More than 20 city and county teachers, administrators, and counselors visited Vulcan Materials - Greystone Facility and the Donaldson Company. Participants were treated to meetings with human resource managers and plant managers, as well as facility tours. The purpose of the in-service is to inform the educators of employers' needs from students entering today's workforce. Many thanks to both companies for hosting the event, to Steve Whittenburg at Vulcan for lunch, and to Tom Carlson at Donaldson for the refreshments.

Attendance Increased At Teacher Supply Depot Opening

A total of 116 teachers visited the Teacher Supply Depot for its summer opening on Friday, July 27. Last July's opening netted only 44 teachers who attended the opening. During the event, the teachers estimate that they received more than $8,000 in free school supplies to stock their classrooms and provide supplies for those students unable to purchase their own. Special thanks to Laughlin Hospital for housing the depot, Wal-Mart Distribution Center and retail store, and the Niswonger Foundation for their donations and support.
