Legislative Luncheon
Registration forms have gone out for the Annual Legislative Luncheon, scheduled for Friday, March 16, at 11:30 a.m. at Comfort Inn, 1790 E. Andrew Johnson Hwy.  Summers-Taylor, Inc. is sponsoring the event and the cost is $15 pre-paid or $20 at the door.  This is a great opportunity to speak directly to your local legislators, state senator and congressman.  Call Lori Collins at the Partnership or email gcp@greenecop.com for more information. 
 
April 26: KGB 'Swing Into Spring' Golf Tournament

Make plans now to participate in the Keep Greene Beautiful "Swing Into Spring" Golf Tournament April 26 at Nolichucky View Golf Club.  Hole sponsors ($100 each), teams ($100 per golfer) and contest sponsors are needed.  Anyone interested in the tournament should contact Jennifer Reynolds at the Partnership, 638-4111, or email kgb@greenecop.com.

 
April 27: Application Deadline for Youth Leadership & Youth Council

Presentations about the Youth Leadership and Youth Council programs will be made to all high school students in March and April, at which time applications will be made available to students. Applications, which are also available at the Greene County Partnership, should be returned to the Partnership by April 27. Selection criteria include school and community involvement, displayed leadership abilities and academic excellence. For more information, contact Jennifer Reynolds at the Partnership.

Economic Development Update

US Nitrogen Breaks Ground!

More than 150 people attended the groundbreaking ceremonies for US Nitrogen on West Seven Springs Road in western Greene County February 17.  A motor caravan of more than 50 vehicles was formed at First Baptist Church and traveled to the building site, arriving to join the large crowd already gathered and enjoying music provided by the West Greene High School Band.  Congratulations to Shawn Rana and Chassity Bird on a very successful, memorable event that evoked a high level of excitement from local community leaders and residents.

New Legislation Proposed To Amend FastTrack Program

The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development is proposing legislation to amend the FastTrack statute by expanding the possible uses of those funds to include relocation expenses, site preparation, equipment purchases and more. Great Turn-Out At Seventh Annual Antique Appraisal Fair & Show

More than 800 items were appraised and approximately 3,500 people visited Tourism's Seventh Annual Antique Appraisal Fair & Show that took place at Greeneville High School on February 18.  At 8:30 a.m., 30 minutes prior to the doors opening, more than 50 people stood in line to either get items appraised or to visit the more than 35 vendors that were set up in the café area of the school.  Tourism would like to thank Dr. Lyle Ailshie and Dr. Linda Stroud for the use of the building, and the Appraisal Fair Committee, sponsors and volunteers for their hard work and support of this event.  Plans are already underway for next year's event. 

Kinser Named 'Reader's Choice'

Tammy Kinser was among those featured in the January 2012 edition of Sports Events magazine for the "2012 Readers' Choice Award" that was won by the GCP Tourism Department for the state of Tennessee.  Kinser will also be featured in the next edition of "Planners to Watch," with Sports Events magazine. 

Gearing Up For NAIA 2012

Tourism's Sports Council has begun planning for the 2012 NAIA Women's Golf National Championships scheduled to take place May 19-25.  With an increase of 15 players this year, the total attendance will be 144 players over the 5-day tournament plus family, fans, coaches and school staff.  In 2011, the event provided more than $600,000 in economic impact to the area.  If you would like to volunteer to help with this championship or would like to sponsor the event, please contact Kinser at tkinser@greenecop.com.

National Spotlight

Greene County businesses have been spotlighted in a national magazine!!!  David Brooks and his businesses, Brooks Builders and Brooks & Malone Plumbing Contractors, were featured on the cover and in a three-page spread in the fall edition of On The Job magazine, a Caterpillar publication.  David explains in the article how he diversified his companies when the home construction business was hit by the housing slowdown to begin installing in-ground pools with all the accompanying accessories like fences, cabanas, patios, grilling stations - to make the pool area a real gathering place.  Congratulations to David & Holly, his wife and business manager, and to their partner, Steve Malone!

Tusculum's Small Business Course Receives High Honor

Tusculum College's "Help Me Help You" program has been selected as one of the top programs in the nation by the Clinton Global Initiative University, a national foundation that recognizes innovative programs and projects that have a large impact with global reach. The program's co-founder, Luis Zamora, a junior business and economics major from Santiago, Chile, will be recognized at the foundation's global conference in Washington, D.C., in March. "Help Me Help You," operated by Tusculum College's business students and students in the Bonner Leader Program, is committed to helping its participants increase their profits, create a business plan, expand their network and improve their practical and interpersonal skills through a variety of unique, globally-tested activities.
