Economic Development Update |
 |
Things Are Looking Up! |
- How is the Greene County economy doing? Better, but we have a way to go. Compared to this time last year, total employment is up slightly. Residential and commercial building permits are tracking slightly higher as well. Retail sales are beginning to move upward. More visitors are staying in Greeneville as the hotel/motel tax receipts are up by about five percent.
- How do the next six months look? As usual, much is dependent upon what Washington does or doesn't do. We have four companies wanting to expand and a few good industrial prospects interested in Greene County that remain hesitant because of the uncertainty in Washington.
- Training opportunities on the horizon: Walters State Community College announced a $20 million expansion project that will provide additional training opportunities for local workers. New/expanded programs will include Occupational/Physical Therapist Assistants, Pre-Allied Health Embedded Certificate, Fire Science, Regional Law Enforcement Academy, and expansion of the Associate of Arts Degree. Jobs will be created through construction, new employees, and the expanded training classes.
