pentathalonFifth Grade Pentathlon

On Friday May 18, the Fifth Grade class showed their beauty, grace and athleticism at the annual Pentathlon held at Live Oak Waldorf School in Meadow Vista.  This year's event was larger than ever with 278 students participating from ten Northern California Waldorf and Charter schools.

pentathalon

The children were divided into the five Ancient Greek city/states of Sparta (red), Athens (yellow), Thebes (turquoise), Corinth (green) and Delphi (blue) and competed with others within their city/state.  Events included discus, javelin, 40 yard dash, 225 yard run, long jump and Greek wrestling.

pentathalonAs the events of the day proceeded, the children were rewarded with a great sense of accomplishment as they performed at their personal best.   Many children received wreaths from the Gods for winning first, second, or third place in their city/state.  Some children also received wreaths for performing their event with "Beauty, Grace and Style".  All in all, CSWS Fifth Graders earned a total of 19 wreaths!  But for all children, participating in this event was more than about winning - they showed tremendous compassion for others, made new friends, cheered on their classmates, and learned that they actually had the strength and endurance to perform these events and do well.

Thank you, Mr. Swarbrick and Ms. Cummings, for doing such an excellent job preparing the children for this event.   We will all remember the many special moments, camaraderie and spirit of this Pentathlon for years to come.

Eighth Graders Leaving on Their Class Trip, Tuesday, May 29

On Tuesday, May 29 the Class of 2011 will be embarking on their Eighth Grade Class Trip.  A large "Green Tortoise Bus" will be pulling into our lower parking lot around 3:30 pm.  If folks want to be able to exit the lower lot that day, they'll need to be clear of the lot before that or wait until we leave at 4 pm.  Parking along Gold Meadows will also be affected (the spots directly across from the parking lot exit).

Have a great trip, Eighth Grade!

A New Chapter Awaits

Dear CSWS Community,

Wow, these past five years have been an amazing journey.  As I transition into motherhood, I will hold so dearly in my heart all the memories and "life lessons" I have gained on the way.  The imprint my students have made on my heart and soul will be with me forever, I will miss them dearly.  I think I gained more knowledge and deepened myself more than the knowledge I gave!  I can not thank my parent body enough. Continue to be strong and united!

It is very hard to step away, but a new chapter and adventure awaits!  Thank you all for making Cedar Springs the school that it is.

Warmly,

Keri Cummings and "Baby Biscuit"

P.S.  If anyone has maternity clothing to lend, please let me know.  If you would like them returned, please also let me know.

A Special Thanks

thanks

Over twelve years ago Rene' Crichton and her three

children, Alexandra, Jacqueline and Spencer Nisson joined Lauren Hickman's Parent-Child Class. The Nisson triplets will now be graduating from our Eighth Grade Class this year. During this time span, Rene' steadfastly volunteered at CSWS in countless ways that deserve special thanks.   Parent Guild, Class Parent, Calendar, The Update, Auction, School Photos, Proofreading and countless school activities have benefitted from Rene's dedication and tireless work.

On behalf of the Development Office and all of the committees and functions at the school that Rene' and her family have supported, thank you.

Lynn Morgan, Director of Community Development

Blessings to Sandy Caplan and Her Family

Dear CSWS Alumni Families,
Early in May, past parent and CSWS Administrator, Sandy Caplan died, unexpectedly of a heart attack.  Memorial services for her will be held on June 24 in Hemet, California, where she had been teaching for several years.  If you would like to attend her memorial, you can contact her son, Adam Caplan, through Facebook.

Submitted by Gloria Howat Brown, past CSWS parent and teacher

A note from CSWS Alumni Parent, Richard English
"It is indeed sad news that Sandy Caplan has passed.  Much of the Cedar Springs Waldorf Community are probably not aware of the major contributions that Sandy made to our school.  She was our school Administrator in the early days and worked tirelessly with a whole host of other parents to build our school.  Her son, Adam, is a graduate of Tim Connolly's class (CSWS first graduating class.)  Those of us who were fortunate to have worked with Sandy truly appreciated her decision making, her fine sense of humor, and her dedication to building a Waldorf School in El Dorado County.  Among her many accomplishments was being a force behind the expansion of our present day site.  People move on, others come with new energy, and a fine school gets build.  This is the Waldorf way.  Thank you Sandy for all you did for us"
