WEAR RED ON PENTECOST, May 27!

Soon we'll be reading about the coming of the Holy Spirit to the church at Pentecost. The Church of the Book of Acts is a dynamic church, a church filled with God's spirit, out to change the world. They're not sure just where they're headed but they understand their mission-to tell the entire world about the love of God given to us in the death and resurrection of Jesus. The proclamation of Jesus is the most important thing they do.

The early Church didn't ask much about the life of Jesus. It wasn't that they didn't care, but they cared more about the testimony that he was raised from the dead. This message of crucifixion and resurrection was so amazing that they simply had to tell the story, and they wanted everyone to know that there was salvation in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, raised from the dead. They were willing to undergo hardship and suffering to tell this story. It was that important to them.

The Church of Acts had purpose. They wanted to carry the life-changing Good News of Jesus to the world. The Church was not respected or valued in first-century society, but the disciples of Jesus just kept at their work, and they changed the history of the world!

The "Acts Church" expected that God was going to continue to do amazing things in their lives. It looked for God to impact every person who called Jesus "Lord and Savior." Things seem different today. Pr. Mike Foss says "The tragedy of much Christian preaching is the fact that both the preacher and the hearer have no expectation that their lives will change as a consequence of hearing the message."

I think Pr. Foss is right, but I'm not sure why. Have we watered down the message of Jesus to be just one of many "godly messages" in our pluralistic culture? Have we decided that Jesus' work just wasn't that important? Or is it that we believe that Jesus was raised from the dead, but just don't see what that has to do with 21st century American life? How can we believe Jesus is alive but live as though he were dead?

The Acts Church was a powerful force that changed the spiritual landscape of its day. Not by its own power or authority, but by prayerfully submitting to the authority and will of God and by seeking to do God's life-changing mission in the world.

We live in a time much like the book of Acts. Christianity is not important to most people, and Christians are often mocked and derided for their faith. I wonder, could the Church today, our church, Shepherd of the Hills, be a church that God could use to change people's lives, like God used the Acts Church? Could we be an Acts Church? I believe that God can use us in ways we haven't even thought of, if only we, like the early Church, are ready to share the life-changing word of Jesus' resurrection with those around us! Will we be like the church that Foss described above, or will we be an Acts Church?

SOME RIDES ARE BETTER THAN OTHERS
by Bud Kamrud

I went to Pastor Dana's office one day seeking wisdom on the relationship between God's free grace and my free will.  After our discussion, I asked him what I needed to do to get a ride on his Harley.  He said I didn't have to do anything, he would be glad to give me a ride on his motorcycle.  Pastor not only preaches grace, he also demonstrates how it works.  All I have to do is believe his promise and trust that he knows what he is doing.  Just like God's grace.

As I anticipate my Harley ride, I also contemplate how much fun it will be.  Will it be more fun than a ride on my power wheelchair?  Definitely.  Will it be more fun than a ride around the golf course with Pastor Bruce and his golfing friends?  Maybe.  Will it be more fun than a Montana trail ride on the back of one of my brother's horses?  Maybe not.  Will it be more fun than my ride through life on God's grace?  Definitely not.

(Pastor's note: I know what you're all thinking...Bud is clearly a person of great faith.)

FOCUS ON HEALTH:

Go Forth and Garden

Summer is just around the corner! It's almost time to get out and enjoy the warm weather. For many people, that means trading in their treadmills for exercise of the garden variety. Bending, reaching, and digging in the garden can provide a great workout, but if you're not careful you can get hurt! A warm-up and cool-down period is just as important for gardening or doing yard work as it is for any athletic activity. Stretching is essential to help prevent injuries, pain, and stiffness.

Stress-Free Stretches:

Before stretching for any activity, keep a few tips in mind. Breathe in and out slowly throughout stretching exercises; stretch gently and smoothly, do not bounce or jerk your body in any way; and stretch as far as you can comfortably. You should not feel pain. Here are a few easy stretches designed to help you get the most out of your gardening workout:

  •  Stand up and prop your heel on a back door step or stool with your knee straight. Bend forward until you feel a slight pull in the muscle at the back of the thigh, called the hamstring. You may need to stabilize yourself by holding onto a garage door handle or sturdy tree branch. Hold the position for 20 seconds, then relax. Do the stretch once more, then repeat with the other heel.
  • Stand up and put your right hand against a wall or other stable surface. Bend your left knee and grab your ankle with your left hand. Pull your heel toward your buttocks to stretch the quadriceps muscles at the front of your thigh. Hold that position for 20 seconds, relax and do it again. Repeat with the other leg.
  • Weave your fingers together above your head with your palms up. Lean to one side for 10 seconds to stretch the upper body, then reverse. Repeat two or three times.
  • "Hug your best friend." Wrap your arms around yourself and rotate to one side, as far as you can go. Hold it for 10 seconds, then reverse.

Finally, be aware of your body's form while working in the yard. Kneel, don't bend. Alternate your stance and motion as often as possible to balance the muscles used.

When You've Worked Too Hard:

If you are already feeling aches and pains from gardening, there are ways to help alleviate the pain: apply a cold pack during the first 48 hours of symptoms or a heat pack AFTER 48 hours. If pain persists, consider visiting a doctor of chiropractic. Studies show that chiropractic care is more effective than traditional medical treatment for low-back pain in particular.

SPOTLIGHT ON YOUTH...Tim O'Grady

What is your favorite Bible passage and why?

Romans 5:8 - "But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us." The wonder of God's love is that Jesus did not wait for us to become perfect before he died on the cross. He died for us when we were weak and ungodly; he came not when we deserved him, but when we most desperately needed him. This verse reminds me not only of God's incomparable love, but also my inexorable need for a savior - every day.

What are some of your best memories from being an active member at Shepherd of the Hills?

My favorite memory from my time at SOTH is the youth trip to New Orleans. It was a life-changing experience. I had so much fun and it was truly amazing to see the good things we can accomplish together.

What are your plans for next year and career aspirations?

I am going to study music (piano and percussion) in college. I haven't made a final decision yet as to where I'll be headed this fall, but a final verdict is soon to come!

SPOTLIGHT ON YOUTH... Sarah Bibbey

What is your favorite Bible passage and why?

Isaiah 53. What amazes me about it is the depth which the speaker (who lived 400 odd years before Jesus) understands what Jesus must go through to redeem mankind. Somehow, this prophet knew exactly what would happen, and how much it would hurt everyone involved, but heal them in the end. It hadn't happened yet, but he writes in the past tense. That strikes me in a way few passages do...because to God it already had happened, irrelevant of time and space. To me, this connects all the dots between the Old Testament and the New, explains the difference between the Son and the Father, and still appeals to the compassion that radiates through the whole story. And it hadn't even happened yet!

What are some of your best memories from being an active member at Shepherd of the Hills?

There's a new one every week. I love the moments after we (the youth group) have finished with a conversation and join in prayer. I love reaching new depths in our discussions. Every second I've spent here is a favorite memory. But I'll go ahead and share an oldie, which happened about four years ago, while we were still bonding. Kendra and Pastor Joe took Jessica, Alex, Austin, Tim, Haley, Chris and I out for dinner at On the Border in Colorado Springs. We were teasing each other, laughing, acting like we'd known each other our whole lives. So when the waitress came over, she said "I'm so glad you came here with your seven kids!" They gave us a free appetizer, and though it was hilarious, I've come to realize it was kind of true. Shepherd of the Hills is a family. I never knew a church could be like a family until I came here.

What are your plans for next year and career aspirations?

Next year, I'm headed to Ghana in West Africa to study and experience new cultures. Then it's off to college. After college, I'm hoping to attend seminary and join the ministry. The support I've received while assisting at SOTH has encouraged me so much! Thank you.
