| Re:New! - Open House March 5 | | Have you heard the buzz about a fun, different, engaging, interactive service that is happening on Saturday nights? Have you seen the changes that have been going on in the Fellowship Hall? If you haven't you definitely need to come check it out! It is a different kind of worship experience. RE:New features theme-based lessons, complete with hands-on projects, multi-media, music, film, art, and other creative opportunities (okay, not all at once, but we'll do all that stuff). Wish you could have talked about a sermon before you left? Asked a question? RE:New! will have discussions around the teaching topic as part of each worship event. Music will be led by a worship band and communion will be served each week. Need coffee? Our RE:Junvenate Java Coffee Bar will provide hot java, cappuccino, chai, and other comforting drinks to enjoy during worship. We invite you to join us on March 5 at 5 pm for our Open House. Please feel free to bring a friend or ten! |

Over the Handlebars....
with Pastor Dana | |

Maybe it's cliché to speak of life as a journey, or a series of journeys, but for me the metaphor works pretty well. My life has surely been a journey so far and I have to believe that there is more travel through the unknown ahead in my life. What about you?
Journeys can be exciting, rewarding and fun, or they can be arduous, taxing and fearful. The kind of journey one will travel through one's life can be a mystery at every turn.
Sometimes the journey seems straight forward-you see the steps that have to be taken and all you do is put one foot in front of the other. It seems that this is often the case when someone becomes ill. Tests, doctors, more tests, more doctors-all you can do is travel one step at a time. Other times the journey seems completely unmarked-filled with questions about direction, destinations and mode of travel. Careers, decisions about children, school choices, family struggles can all make us feel like we've lost our way.
When we are on a journey we often look for a road or a path to guide our travel. Getting off of the path is interesting but it can be dangerous. Walking too close to the cliff in the mountains or too close to the slippery rocks along the water's edge might be invigorating, but it might be deadly. Sometimes finding our own path is the most rewarding; sometimes it simply means we wasted time and energy when someone else has shown the way and we ignore their wisdom.
Lent is often spoken of as a journey, and I think rightly so. Lent is about spiritual movement, and it is far more about the travel itself than it is about the destination. It is a journey of discipleship, of learning to follow Jesus, wherever he might lead us. The journey of discipleship is one that may follow a well-marked route, but following Jesus may also take us off the familiar track. Jesus isn't afraid to bushwhack. Disciples learn that it's good to follow the Guide when he takes us off the trail.
Lent is also a good time for some self-questioning, what some call spiritual examination. So maybe these days are good ones to ask yourself some "journey-questions." What kind of journey with Jesus are you on at the moment? Have you let the Guide get out of sight? Are you developing the Marks of Discipleship in your life, so that you are ready when life takes you off the path? Are you ready to follow Jesus, even if he decides to bushwhack?
May this Lent be for you a good Journey.

| Generations in Faith - A New Way to Do Biblesong | |
Now that many of you have had a chance to see the wonderful Rich Melheim in action I am sure you are fired up about where Sunday school is headed. We have had almost a year with the Biblesong curriculum which has had some changes and adjustments along the way. We are going to make another change next fall and move to what is called Generations in Faith Together or GIFT. This will still be Biblesong but families will be participating together on Sunday mornings. In continuing with Rich's view of "incubating faith every night in every home" we invite families to participate in Sunday school together. This is a great way to start Faith 5 conversations for the week as well as take home a lesson to explore as a family. GIFT will be a time for elementary age children and their families whether it be parents, grandparents and/or aunts and uncles to engage together in their faith. The middle school and high school students will continue to have a separate curriculum.
If you would like to start engaging in Sunday school with your child now we welcome you to come and join us on Sunday mornings whenever you would like. Please note that the lesson is split over two Sundays. The first part of the lesson is a large group time where students are participating in music, trivia, and theater. The second part of the lesson consists of music with the large group and then we break out into small groups for art attack, and Faith 5. We look forward to having you join us! |
| Lenten Soup Suppers to Begin on Ash Wednesday | |
Lenten Soup Suppers will begin on Ash Wednesday, March 9, and continue through April 13. This year we are asking members to bring a soup of their choice to share with others, or, you may bring a dessert. Bread will be provided. Serving time will begin at 5:30 p.m. Crock pots will be plugged in to keep the soups warm. If you can provide your favorite soup or dessert, please indicate so on the sign up sheet located on the Welcome Center table. Join us in this opportunity to share in a simple supper of soup and bread prior to each Lenten service. If you have questions, contact Pauline Eisenberg, 377-1318 or Sue Fretheim, 204-9467. |
| Spotlight on Youth - Julia Baietti | What is your favorite thing about church? My favorite thing about Church is getting to worship God and to be with all the people at church. I like all of worship.
What is your favorite Bible verse? My favorite Bible verse is John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son."
What do you like to do with your free time? I have several hobbies. Two of them include reading and art. The Golden Compass, Mossflower and Harry Potter are some of my favorite books right now. |
| Changes in Sunday Morning Coffee Time | |
We have been serving coffee with the new Farmer Brothers machines for a year now. We extend our thanks to all volunteers who have set up before the 8:15 service and those who have cleaned up after the 10:30 service. Some of these volunteers would like to take a break. Congregational Care has a new, simplified plan! We would like one person to set up by 9 am and clean up after 10:30 each week. Paper cups would be used so there will be no cups to wash. Questions? Ask anyone wearing an ASK ME ABOUT COFFEE sticker, or call Sue Fretheim, 204-9467. |
| Re:New! The Fellowship Hall | For a while now, many folks here at SOTH have been talking about how to give the Fellowship Hall a facelift. The Church Council reviewed a proposal for new paint, lights and touch-ups at their retreat last Saturday. They were excited to say "Go ahead!" and to encourage our young adults to lead the charge. The new look will mainly consist of painting and lighting--think "modern lodge." The brick walls and beams will be painted to soften and warm up the room. The lighting will be changed and will be adjustable for optimal brightness and dimming. All of our quilters and crafters will be able to see to work, and we will be able to set the mood for wedding receptions, congregational activities and our RE:New! service on Saturday nights. Changes will be happening over the next few weeks with a completion target on March 5. We hope that you enjoy the renewed Fellowship Hall!
...a note from PD: about a month ago I had a wonderful talk with Luella Oberg, whose husband, Alan, made the chandeliers a number of years ago. I asked her about changing them and about taking down the quilts from the wall. She told me "I think it's time for a change." So, we move forward with her blessing! |
| Pyramid Prayers | | Here's an idea for refreshing your prayer life. Do you have a pencil and a sheet of paper handy? Try constructing a "pyramid prayer": one word makes the first line, two words the next, three words the following one, and so forth. Here are some the high school Sunday school class created, for you to imagine in their pyramid shape. Cameron Fedde is a senior, who prayed "God / help me / to be focused, / going off to college / in a whole new world. / Help me enjoy this great experience." Tyler Bibbey reflected "Press / me down / leave me lying / it won't do anything. / I look in your eyes / blessed am I among your heart." His sister Sarah wrote "God / thank you / for the journey. / In itself, it's beautiful, / the destination, mysterious, ultimate, approaches. / I cannot see it yet and / I do not know it yet, but / soon You will show me. I must watch." Senior Jessica Lenczycki wrote "Peace: / Waiting, wishing / alone will not / bring about such times. / We must be the makers / and mend ourselves this broken world." |
| No Longer Just 'Greek to Me' | |
If you see some folks walking around church with puzzled looks on their faces, or hear them muttering strange foreign-sounding gibberish, chances are you have just encountered one or more of the members of our Greek Class, gathering twice a week under the tutelage of Pastor Bruce Bergquist.
The class has been meeting since early January, and they are now well on their way to becoming "New Testament Scholars"-although they would all most likely chuckle at that designation!
But in truth, they are making good progress. After one recent intense class session, a class member remarked, observing the board covered with all sorts of sentences and phrases written in Greek, "You know, we really have made some progress, haven't we? I can look at that now, and it actually makes sense!"
Half a dozen class participants, including SOTH members Bud Kamrud, Chris Walker, Harlan Fretheim, and Kathy Wendland, are slogging their way through this challenging language-absorbing not only all the unusual and difficult points of grammar, but also adding 30 vocabulary words to their memory banks with each lesson.
So why are these good people subjecting themselves to such a grueling routine? Basically, just because of their love for the Bible and the desire to learn a skill that will help them understand what the New Testament says more clearly. As they advance in their knowledge of Greek, they will appreciate the difficulties of Bible translation, and see how there are emphases and connections present in the Greek New Testament that are inevitably lost in translation.
According to Jeremy Duff, the author of the textbook the class is using, reading the New Testament in Greek is something like watching a football game on TV rather than listening to it on the radio. It's more interesting in many ways-still, ultimately, it doesn't change the score of the game! |
