| Re:new - Debuts on February 12! | Our new Saturday evening worship opportunity, RE:new! begins at 5pm on February 12 in the Fellowship Hall. It is a different kind of worship experience.
RE:new features theme-based lessons, complete with hands-on projects, multi-media, music, film, art, and other creative opportunities (okay, not all at once, but we'll do all that stuff).
Wish you could have talked about a sermon before you left? Asked a question? RE:new! will have discussions around the teaching topic as part of each worship event.
Music will be led by a worship band and communion will be served each week. Need coffee? Our Rejuvenate Java Coffee Bar will provide hot java, cappuccino, chai, and other comforting drinks to enjoy during worship. You're invited to come and enjoy RE:new! during February and look forward to our Open House, March 5 at 5 pm. |

Over the Handlebars....
with Pastor Dana | |

From Duke University's Faith and Leadership: "Being an inviting church is really so critical," said Deborah Bruce, project director for the U.S. Congregational Life Survey. "Our research shows over and over the No. 1 reason someone comes to a church for the first time is because someone invites them."
It sounds a great deal like Paul, when he urges the churc h in Rome to share the good news with their community. The research says that nearly half of all people who come to a church come because they were invited. While we consider ourselves to be "friendly" to those who walk through our doors, the fact is that few are likely to come if we don't invite them. How many ways can you think of to invite a friend or neighbor to become familiar with SOTH? Ask them to worship? Forward the e-version of this newsletter? Share our Facebook address (click on the 'Find us on Facebook' bar to the left)? Give them a paper newsletter or bulletin? Invite them to an activity? Have a cup of coffee and tell them your faith story? Explain why SOTH is important to you? What other ways can you think of? Got any stories about sharing your faith? Email me or post them on our fan page!
When it comes to responding to those visitors, it helps to think in new ways, according to the study.
Thinking in a new way about something familiar is always a hard thing. Every one of us has comfort zones-places that are secure and restful. The problem comes when one person's security becomes another's anxiety. Imagine being with a friend who was raised in another country, say, China. Together, you walk into a room filled with people speaking Mandarin. You can see the comfort on your friend's face as he or she noticeably relaxes. You, however, are surrounded by folks speaking a language that is completely unintelligible to you. The harsh sounds and multiple tones are confusing and your apprehension begins to grow. Your friend's comfort is your anxiety.
A Man Walks into a Bar...To preach!
Here's the link!
For those not familiar with the cultures of Lutheran worship, or of our congregation, we might as well be speaking Mandarin.
"So, the next step -- and what is often the hardest part according to many church growth authorities -- comes as congregations are challenged to adapt their traditions to meet the spiritual needs of new members."
Will we be able to respond to the new folks among us by being open to adapting our traditions to meet new spiritual needs? I think we can be, and I believe it fits well with our Lutheran theology. Luther was never one to get stuck in tradition for tradition's sake. Whether it was translating the Bible and the Mass into German, finding pub tunes to transform into hymns, or using the latest technology for sharing the gospel (that new-fangled printing press), Luther had a drive for helping people know about Jesus. It makes sense that we would speak in the language of our day and meet the spiritual needs of those who come with new questions and need a new look at Jesus. So, if we're willing to follow Brother Martin's lead, we can learn to discern which of our traditions are necessary for our faith to be true and which of them we can set aside as we move into the future of ministry.
The challenge is set before us-to be an inviting chur ch, and to be a church willing to adapt and grow in order that the folks who come to find Jesus might find him among us, in a language they can understand.

| Stephen Ministry | |
Stephen Ministry is a group of caring lay people who provide one-to-one Christian care to hurting people in and around your congregation.
Shepherd of the Hills is partnering with Spirit of Joy and Our Savior's Lutheran churches and is currently in the middle of a training session. Our church has more than a dozen Stephen Ministers and Stephen Leaders to facilitate this wonderful, caring program, but we're always looking for more.
If you would like to hear more about Stephen Ministry, please talk to Louise Wendt-White or Kari Fedde. |
| Spotlight on Youth - Griff Bibbey | What is your favorite thing about church? My favorite thing about Church is getting to worship God and to be with all the people at church. I like all of worship.
What is your favorite Bible verse? My favorite Bible verse is John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son."
What do you like to do with your free time? I have several hobbies. Two of them include reading and art. The Golden Compass, Mossflower and Harry Potter are some of my favorite books right now. |
| Elder Cab - from Kari Fedde, our Parish Associate | Shepherd of the Hills now has a group of folks who would like to pick up any homebound members and bring them to our Sunday morning worship services. Please contact Amy in the office if you would like a ride to worship. Also, contact Kari Fedde if you are willing to provide transportation once or twice a month to homebound members. We will match people up according to location within Fort Collins.
"The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ." 1 Corinthians 12:12
Many thanks to those who have already volunteered to provide rides. Through your discipleship, our body of believers can come together more fully. |

| Thank You's | |
The Sewing Circle would like to say THANKS to those who supported our fund-raising efforts at the Alternative Giving Fair and also thank Thrivent for matching funds. The money we received will help tremendously in our quilting projects throughout the coming year. About three dozen quilts were made in 2010 and were given to homeless and needy folks in our community through the following agencies ---- Mathews House, Salvation Army, Murphy Center and LaFamilia Family Center. The donations were received with gratitude and many thanks.
We greatly appreciate the donations of fabic which have enabled us to continue making the quilts. Large pieces of cotton material and queen-sized sheets are an ongoing need. We would welcome anyone interested in joining our group which meets the 2nd Wednesday of the month from 9-12. Previous quilting experience is not necessary. Come visit and have some coffee with us.
