| Re:new - Saturday Night Worship begins in February! | |
Looking to renew your spirit in the New Year? A new worship service is starting in January! Brought to you by RE:Group, Shepherd of the Hills' Young Adult Group, RE:new! is a time to gather for a style of service that relates our everyday lives to our faith through the arts, reflection, small group discussions, and a new variety of music while celebrating our Lutheran faith with communion and fellowship. Please come experience this new worship service at our kickoff on February 12 at 5 pm.

Later this month we celebrate Martin Luther King Day, and in doing so remember the work done by Dr. King to bring to the forefront of our nation the issue of human and civil rights for all Americans. He was demanding and hopeful, challenging and expectant.
As part of his famous speech at the Lincoln Memorial in August of 1963, King said "When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
"It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked "insufficient funds." But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. So we have come to cash this check."
Nearly fifty years after this renowned speech, the challenge of equality for all is still before us. The biting winds of prejudices and separatism still blow through our nation and our community. We still look forward to the day when all people "will be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
King saw his cry for freedom as directly tied to the promises of the prophets, especially the words of Isaiah: I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together (Isaiah 40:3-5). His commitment to love his enemies was rooted in his Christian faith, which both empowered and sustained his work. His vision still inspires me, and it hope it inspires you, to take on the mantle of love for all people, of respect for all human beings, and to see in the face of the marginalized the face of Christ himself.
I still hope for the day when King's dream can become our reality. ~PD

| Spotlight on Youth - Mark Lenczycki | What is your favorite part of Sunday School?
I like the Christmas programs - especially the shepherd costumes and Bible readings that go with Art Attack.
Who is your favorite Bible character or story?
I like the story of Jesus' birth because it is interesting to hear. The wise men are thoughtful when giving him the gifts.
What do you like to do with free time and with your family (Dad:Tim, Mom:Kris, Sisters:Jessica and Laura)?
I like to play on the computer and be outside using my imagination to play pirate and space ship games. I also like to read. Right now I am reading the Percy Jackson series about the Greek gods. We have family movie nights, play board games (Life and Who Nu) and talk. |

| Communion Class |
Mark your Calendars for a Communion Class!
January 15, 2011 from 9:30-11:00
A fun morning is planned for learning about the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Come join Pastor Dana and Pastor Leta for a time together to explore, learn, and journey in faith around the sacrament of communion. This class is designed for multiple ages and for parents to attend with their children. Please register by emailing office@sothftc.org with your name and the names and ages of the children that will be attending with you. If you are unsure if your child is ready to take communion please contact Pastor Dana with any questions. We look forward to seeing you! |
| Crop Hunger Walk Delivers Check | |
On Thursday December 18 , the Fort Collins CROP Hunger Walk committee presented a check for $4,070 to the Food Bank for Larimer County. The demand for food assistance has increased by 30% during these difficult financial times. This check will provide for over 16,000 nutritious meals to our local county residents. THANK YOU to all the participants of the 2010 walk, recruiters, volunteers, walkers and sponsors. See you all on 2 October 2011 for the next walk. |
| Stephen Ministry | Stephen Ministry is a complete system for training and organizing lay people to provide one- to-one Christian care to hurting people in and around your congregation.
Shepherd of the Hills is partnering with Spirit of Joy and Our Savior's Lutheran churches to offer Stephen Ministry training to anyone interested in being a caregiver. Our church has more than a dozen Stephen Ministers and several Stephen Leaders to facilitate this wonderful, caring program.
Stephen Ministry training will begin January 6 so if you're interested, don't delay! Please talk to Louise White or Kari Fedde as soon as possible to find out more about Stephen Ministry at Shepherd of the Hills. |
| Youth - 30 Hr Famine |
Did you know that a child dies from hunger-related causes every 10 seconds? Or that more than one billion people experience hunger every day? Or how about the poor that spend most of their money just trying not to starve? Please take a moment and imagine you and your family living off of $1.25 a day. Impossible, right? WRONG! People all over the world are trying not starve to death and with organizations, such as World Vision, we are on the right track in helping to fight world hunger. World Vision is an organization that has been in the poverty-fighting business for six decades! With taking part in the 30 Hour Famine for a second year in a row, Shepherd of the Hills youth and I will hope to help World Vision decrease the number of starving people all over the world. We are holding the 30 Hour Famine on February 25th, 26th, and 27th. We are going to meet at the church in the Fellowship Hall on February 25th for dinner at 7:00pm. We then will go our separate ways for the night and start the 30 Hour Fast. Last year, we got together on Saturday afternoon at the Lenczycki's and watched movies to pass the time and to distract us from our hungry stomachs. Since the day was a success, we will most likely do the same thing or something similar. Finally, to end the fast, we are planning to take communion together at the 8:15 service. | Lutheran Campus Ministry Seminar | |
Lutheran Campus Ministry at Colorado State University is hosting a special study seminar on "The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict", and we invite interested persons to attend. This is scheduled for three weeks on Thursday evenings - January 20th, January 27th, and February 3rd, 2011, 6:00-7:30 p.m. Dinner will be provided. The seminar will be conducted by Lawrence Baietti, E.L.C.A. Pastor (ret.), who is the "LCM Scholar-in-Residence 2011." We will meet at LCM-St. Thomas Chapel, 805 S. THE ISRAELI - PALESTINIAN CONFLICT
WHY SHOULD THERE BE AN ISRAELI - PALESTINIAN CONFLICT? After W.W.II in l945 the United Nations re-established the nation of Israel in its old territory South of Lebanon and at the same time provided the Palestinians with the adjacent land, known as the "West Bank", for them to establish their country. Although this was done peacefully, since then there has been nothing but discord, bloodshed, and actual war.
The Palestinian Christians, including those of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Jordan and the Holy Land, have lived peacefully with the majority Palestinian Muslims for centuries. Now they are a persecuted minority and are leaving Palestine for the Western world as quickly as they can. Meanwhile the entire Muslim world is aligned against Israel and also against the U.S. for supporting Israel. What has gone wrong? It behooves every American and specifically American Lutherans to learn about the full story. |

We are a Young Adult Group that is dedicated to supporting one another in our faith! We enjoy spending time together to regroup by having bible studies, fun events and service projects. Check out what we have coming up in January!

Crocheters, Knitters and Wannabes... Our Prayer Shawl Ministry has begun in the Narthex area. We meet the 2nd & 4th Thursday of each month. We would love to have anyone who is interested! Come for Fellowship and a cup of coffee!

From the Congregational Ministry Team: The Congregational Care ministry team wishes to thank those who contributed gifts, donations, and their time during this year's homebound Christmas stocking activity. Thank you to: Members who purchased gifts or provided donations for snacks and stocking stuffers. The Sunday School children who decorated and stuffed the stockings. Members who delivered the stockings. Visits to our homebound members is tremendously uplifting. A special thank you to Sue Peterson for sewing the stockings together and Lynn Bockhaus for leading the children in the decorating activity.
From Lutheran Family Services: The Lutheran Family Services Foster Care and Family Services Program sincerely appreciates your support this Christmas. Every Angel Tree wish for children in our foster homes was fulfilled and often exceeded. Thank you for bringing smiles to the faces of many children, and a special thank you to Lois Lawson for her help and generosity! |
