Understanding the Haftorah:

The Weekly Haftorah in Context

Gerry Adler

Green Gallery at 8:30 pm

11/1, 11/15, 12/13 and 1/17

We read a Haftorah weekly without focusing on its historical context. Who was the prophet who spoke the words of the Haftorah, when did he live and to what events was he reacting? Why did Chazal choose this particular portion from the Prophets for this particular Parsha - are there connections beyond the one given by ArtScroll? We will also expand on a theme inherent in that week's Haftorah, exploring how that theme is treated in Tanach. The dates, prophets and themes we will discuss are set forth below.

VeTain Tal Umatar - From the Daily Halacha

At Maariv of Monday night Dec. 5th, in Chutz L'eretz we begin to include Vetain Tal Umatar into the Shemonah Esrei in the beracha of "Boraich Aleinu". If one became aware, after one completed the bracha Mevaraich Hashanim, that one omitted Vetain Tal Umatar one should wait to insert it right before Ki Ata Shomeah of "Shema Koleinu".

If one already completed the beracha of "Shomeah Tfilah", one may insert it before saying "Retzei". If one already began "Retzei" one must return to the bracha of "Boraich Aleinu", which is the proper place for Vetain Tal Umatar. If one already completed the Shemonah Esrei and stepped backward, then one must repeat the entire Shemonah Esrei.  Shulchan Aruch with Mishna Brurah 117:5 see also Bi'ur Halacha

It is advisable to repeat 101 times (Chasam Sofer OC:20) [at the very least 90 times]: Ve'et Col Minei T'vuata Letova Vetain Tal Umatar so as to make the inclusion of Vetain Tal Umatar habitual and fluent, thus eliminating any future doubt as to whether one included Ve'tain Tal Umatar in the Shemonah Esrei or not.

*   *   *

For an explanation as to why we begin saying Vetain Tal Umatar in December, please see the following article from Rabbi Ellie Fischer, Rabbeinu Gregory's Shittah on Praying for Rain.
PARSHA SUMMARY FROM TORAH.ORG

1st Aliya: Ya'akov experiences the famed prophecy of "Jacob's Ladder".

2nd Aliya: Ya'akov arrives in Charan, encounters Rachel, and contracts with Lavan for her hand in marriage.

3rd Aliya: Lavan switches Leah for Rachel forcing Ya'akov to negotiate another 7 years of service for Rachel. Leah gives birth to Reuven, Shimon, Levi, and Yehudah. Rachel marries off Bilhah to Yakov who gives birth to Dan and Naftoli. Leah marries off Zilpah to Ya'akov, and she gives birth to Gad and Asher.

4th Aliya: Rachel contracts with Leah for Reuven's mandrakes, after which Leah gives birth to Yisachar and Zevulen. Rachel finally gives birth to Yoseph, and Ya'akov approaches Lavan to negotiate a proper salary for continued service.

5th Aliya: Ya'akov's uses his vast knowledge of nature and husbandry to amass a fortune in sheep and cattle. After 6 years he decides with Rachel and Leah to flee from Lavan.

6th Aliya: They flee and Lavan catches them. Hashem (G-d) intervenes and Ya'akov, while confronting Lavan for his years of duplicity, unwittingly curses Rachel.

7th Aliya: Ya'akov and Lavan separate and Ya'akov arrives at the border of Canaan in 2205.
