Stacey Aldrich Named Deputy Secretary for the
Office of Commonwealth Libraries Stacey Aldrich

Stacey Aldrich has been named Deputy Secretary for the Office of Commonwealth Libraries effective November 5, 2012.

Aldrich has more than 20 years of professional library experience, and currently serves as the State Librarian in California.

As State Librarian, Adrich has managed a diverse organization that includes the Witkin Law Library, Government Publications, California History and Sutro Library, Braille and Talking Book Library, and the Library Development and California Research Bureau.  She has also worked at the Omaha Public Library, the Maryland Department of Education Library, and the Hood College in Maryland as an Information Technology Librarian. Aldrich holds a BA in Russian Language and Literature and a Master of Library Science, both from the University of Pittsburgh.

Aldrich has a clear, strategic vision for the future of libraries and library service. Pennsylvanians will benefit from her wide-ranging knowledge about libraries and their impact on education, literacy, and local economies.

Cynthia Richey, Chair of the Governor's Advisory Council on Library Development, adds that "Stacey has broad, deep experience, including significant leadership roles, and she understands Pennsylvania's library structure and fiscal environment. She has a deep desire to make the PA State Library and the libraries it serves the very best they can be. Under Stacey's leadership, Pennsylvania's libraries will thrive and continue their tradition of excellence."

As we welcome Stacey to the Department of Education, we want to express our deep appreciation to Alice Lubrecht for her stewardship and leadership while serving as acting Deputy Secretary for the Office of Commonwealth Libraries during the past six months.  Alice will return to her position as Director, Bureau of State Library directing and managing library services for the Commonwealth.

Your Input needed:
Survey from Collaborative Library Program

Survey
The Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) needs your ideas and opinions in planning for the future as the organization evolves to keep Summer Reading viable, interesting and enjoyable for any age.  Access the survey here. Once you complete the survey you will be unable to access it again on the same computer.
The survey closes on Friday, October 19, 2012.

All Pennsylvania public libraries are members of the Collaborative Summer Library Program
, which is a grassroots organization that truly collaborates on providing solid, educational, and fun Summer Library Programs for members.  Dues are paid with Library Services and Technology Act funds.  A manual is available to every public library in the state with a yearly theme and ideas for babies through seniors.  Beginning with the Early Literacy Manual, Youth manual, Teen Manual, and finally the Adult Manual, Summer Reading can truly be a family event!

Evanced Solutions
The Evanced Solutions Summer Reader software, mentioned in the survey, is available FREE of charge to any public library in Pennsylvania.
This software allows you to structure it in many ways for summer reading, but is
not limited to summer use.  Libraries may also use it for book clubs, special reading events, and to keep track of reading logs.  It also allows patrons to post their own book reviews.

To sign up for this software, please send an email to Anne Kruger who will provide the sign up link.  Evanced Solutions also provides free webinars, an online manual, and set-up instructions on YouTube.

Join CSLP as a member on www.cslpreads.org and feel free to share this survey link with anyone in the library who works with Summer Reading:

Civic and Social Literacy
Libraries can give citizens of all ages the knowledge and skills they need to improve their lives, to contribute effectively in their communities, and to participate in civil discourse.

Libraries are already helping Pennsylvanians with Civic and Social Literacy and perhaps only need to label, describe and market these efforts as such!  Have a  civil war program or a fashion show at the library? Perhaps you held a Socrates cafe or an art display? Market these programs as Civic and Social Literacy!

Teens at Tredyffrin Public Library in Strafford put civic and social literacy in play and, as a consequence, bring teens together.

Theater
Members of the Conestoga High School drama club and a few of their friends presented the play Snow White and the Seven Dudes by Matt Flick at the library. They took full charge of the project by casting the play, directing it, setting up rehearsals, and creating head shots of the actors. This troupe of young actors, painters, and a photographer gave up many hours of fun in the sun to bring fun and affordable theater to community members of all ages.

Benefit Dances
Teen DJ Matt Holtzer has held two successful teen fundraisers at the library. The first benefit was to raise money for his Eagle Scout project at the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge. His second dance raised over $900 for the T&E Cares school supply drive.  Check out video of the dance.

In their online thank you, the Tredyffrin & Easttown Care group wrote, "Thanks to Matt Holtzer and the Tredyffrin Library for coordinating the dance fund raiser for T&E Care School Supply Drive for 2012.  This was truly an example of students helping their peers to be successful!"

DJ Matt Holtzer is now hard at work with the drama club and the teen advisory board to have a dance fundraiser to install theater lighting in the library's large meeting room for future productions.

Contact Laura Doan at the Tredyffrin Library for additional information.
