March 30th, 2012

Dear Lakeview Families and Friends,

Thank you to our families who were able to join us for Math Fest last Saturday. Lakeview received the Spirit Award, a HUGE trophy, for having the greatest turnout! We hope to continue this tradition at Lakeview and build this as a wonderful community opportunity to share our school-wide passion for MATH!!!

In my last message to families I mentioned the review of Lakeview's traffic flow patterns by the Kirkland Police Department. In light of the interest in the changes that have occurred since the last traffic committee was formed around these issues in the Spring of 2010, we are going to be developing another AdHoc committee made up of parents, Lakeview staff, City of Kirkland, LWSD Facilities and Risk Management, as well as Kirkland Police Department, to outline the concerns and work collaboratively to develop identify solutions that are focused on the safety of our students. If you are interested in being a part of this committee, please let me know. I anticipate that we will have 3-4 meetings.

As we come upon the last few months of the school year, I'd like to also ask all families to review the following items that pertain to the safety and well-being of our students:

1) Morning Drop Off-Afternoon Pick Up Traffic Safety-

For the safety of all students, please review the following:

  • If you are waiting for your child for any period of time, please do not let your car idle as a means to help protect the environment. We've noted parents whose cars are idling in the pick up line in the afternoon - some for as long as 20 minutes. We would like to ask our parents to help our environment by turning your cars off while waiting in line.
  • As you enter the parking lot off 68th, cars should travel on the right-hand side of the driveway and next to the curb in order to maintain a smooth traffic flow. Student drop off occurs on the curb side only just past the south side of the gym where Safety Patrols are stationed to help assist students getting out of the cars.       (There are no parallel parking spots in front of the gym.)
  • The drop off/pick up is designed to be a very quick process so think of the airport drop off.   Pull in! Drop off/ pick up!   Merge!
  • Cars leaving the Lakeview lot on 68th are not be able to turn left from 8:30 AM-9:15AM and 3:30 PM- 4:00 PM everyday!

2) Parent Parking Lot Courtesy-

We ask for everyone's care in watching out for students (and pedestrians) who are walking to and from school and through our parking lots each day. If, by chance, you find yourself in a situation where you observe unsafe driving in our school parking lots, I urge you to write down the license plate number of the careless driver and report it to the Lakeview office.

3) School-Wide Expectations-Students need to go around the building, not through the main office in the AM.

In the last year we have been working together as a school to create consistency in some of our building-wide expectations.  One area of focus that has been in place for several years at Lakeview that we would appreciate everyone's help with is that students go around the building, not through the main office, to meet their classmates in line to enter the building. We appreciate the help of our parents in getting this procedure implemented consistently in our school!

4) Breakfast For Students-

We have been thrilled with the turnout for breakfast every day in the Commons. Students enter to have breakfast from the driveway main doors each day. We have an average of 40-50 students per day enjoying a breakfast prior to going to class. Reminder: Breakfast is $1.00 or offered Free for students on Free or Reduced Lunch.

Thank you for taking the time to review this information. We appreciate the support you continuously provide to our students, our staff, and our school! Please let me know if you have any questions.

It's hard to believe that Spring Break is upon us next week! On behalf of the entire Lakeview staff, we wish our students a restful break filled with many fun memoires. We look forward to welcoming you back in April for lots of great learning!

Wishing you a wonderful Spring Break!

Kind Regards,

Shawna
