Dear Lakeview Families and Friends, We have had a very exciting week at Lakeview! Thank you to our parents and family members for taking the time to join your student in the second round of Goal-Setting Conferences this year. It has been rewarding to hear the feedback from parents, students and staff on the progress being made and the pride our students feel about their successes this year! We strongly believe in the partnership we share with parents and families in the education of all Lakeview students and appreciate you working hand-in-hand with us to build the success of our students.
During the last two years, the Lakeview staff have been keenly focused on working collaboratively to build a positive and enduring math culture. To that end, we have taken the following steps: ~Set specific goals to direct our work in helping increase our students' achievement and their attitudes in math. These goals are based on progress at the overall school, grade level and individual student level in order for us to accurately follow each child's progress.
~Completed a Math Audit for Lakeview Elementary School which incorporates the input from staff, student and parent surveys.
~Held on-going after-school enrichment classes to support extensions in mathematical understanding for Lakeview students in grades 1-4.
~Written two successful grants to the Lake Washington School District Foundation to attain additional funds to support these math initiatives.
~Funded a grant for sixth grade Math Olympiad through PTSA.
~Created enthusiasm for engaging all Lakeview students in a math competition each month to find the solution to a "Problem of the Month" for prizes.
The areas we have not been able to achieve completion are in our plans for open times where students can play math games at recess.
We are thrilled to announce two additional activities to promote MATH EDUCATION AT LAKEVIEW that we would like to have ALL LAKEVIEW FAMILIES ATTEND!! There will be math fun for families and an opportunity for parents to learn ways to make math more fun with your children at home! The first activity is Family Math Night on Thursday, 2/23 and will include a Family Pizza Dinner in the Commons (5:45-6:15pm), Math Games for Families (6:15-6:30pm), and a Parent Workshop (6:30-7:15pm). The second activity is MATH FEST on Saturday, 3/24 from 1:00-4:00pm. We are thrilled to have been selected to host this exciting event! There will be a School Spirit Award trophy going to the school with the most attendance at Math Fest. If you would like to see a sample of what all the fun is about, check out this video of a recent Math Fest in Seattle- http://vimeo.com/9368752. It makes me smile every time! We are thrilled to celebrate and acknowledge the excellent mathematicians in our school! Please plan to join us for these two upcoming events! I hope to see you all there! Warmly,
