Filing a Float Plan

Before heading out on the water, you should always let someone know where you are going and when you will be back. A float plan, however, should be filed if your boat trip is going to be a lengthier one.

A float plan offers some insurance if
the unforeseen happens, providing authorities with critical information that could help assist you. Float plans typically include:

> Who you are
> Who is with you
> What vessel you
   are in
> Where you planned
   to go
> When you planned
   to return

The plan could be left with a trusted friend or relative, a yacht club, or a marina. Once a trip has been completed, inform the party who has your float plan that you've returned and all is well.

GPS Navigation Blamed for
Midnight Collision
boat collision

Experts have repeatedly stated that charts are a necessary navigational tool to have on board as a complement (or back up) to GPS. Sail-world.com recently provided readers with a reminder as to why: the mariners aboard the vessel pictured here, who were using GPS, thought they were in safe waters when a major collision occurred.

According to the article, "Once again the potential for inaccuracy by GPS equipment has been illustrated. Three sailors who were using GPS for night navigation were forced to abandon their boat when it hit rocks not far from Nelson on the South Island of New Zealand this week.

"The yacht Okiana was crewed by the owner Hugh McCrae, his son and a friend. McCrae told rescuers that they 'thought they were in the middle of the bay using their GPS,' but they weren't and hit the rocks."

OceanGrafix is supporting the 4th annual Spin-A-Thon, presented by the Marine Industry Cares Foundation. The stationery bike "spinning" event (being held on April 20) raised $100,000 for KID----Kids in Distress----at last year's event. The mission of KID is to prevent child abuse, preserve the family, and treat children who have suffered from abuse and neglect.

Fire extinguishers are required on all vessels that have a fuel source. Use and teach other passengers the P.A.S.S. acronym.

Pull the pin, Aim at the base of the fire, Squeeze the handle, and Sweep side to side.
