Children's Faith Formation
Sunday School schedule for December and January:
December 25 - Christmas Day. No regular Sunday school classes.
January 1 -- No regular Sunday school classes
January 8 -- Classes resume.
Merry Christmas and Blessings in the New Year to all St. Mark's kids and children's teachers!
Spark Family Pages are provided week to week because a daily life has an important influence on a child's faith formation as families walk in faith together. Use one or two suggestions during the week for prayer, conversation, reading, or serving together in faith. The stories and activities connect with our week's lectionary lesson and can supplement worship and Sunday School discussions or can be used when you plan to be away. Download this week's Christmas lesson here: Spark Family Page

Women of St. Mark's
Spring Luncheon: We are looking ahead to our next event, a spring luncheon on May 12, the day before Mother's Day. At this time we will reveal our secret pals. We are looking for ladies to help with planning the lunch, program, publicity, and decorations. Please contact Carol Paulson, Helen Conroy, Mimi Graves, or Bonnie Wascher if you would like to help. We will meet early in February for planning. Our Cluster Churches will be invited.
People have asked me for the recipe used for the Women's Advent Brunch several weeks ago. Being able to make the night before makes the job easier. John Wascher
Tahoe Brunch
12 slices white bread, crust removed
2-3 Tbl. butter, softened
½ cup butter
½ lb fresh mushrooms, trimmed and sliced
2 cups yellow onions, thinly sliced
Salt & Pepper
1 ½ lbs Italian mild sausage
¾ - 1 lb Cheddar cheese, grated
5 eggs
2 ½ cups milk
3 tsp Dijon mustard
1 tsp dry mustard powder
1 tsp nutmeg, ground
2 Tbl. fresh parsley, finely chopped
1. Butter the bread with the softened butter and set aside. In a 10-12 in. skillet, melt the 1/2 c. butter and brown the mushrooms and onions over med. heat for 5-8 minutes or until tender. Season to taste with salt and pepper and set aside. Cook the sausage and cut into bite-sized pieces (or crumble into small pieces).
2. In a greased 11x7 in. shallow casserole, layer 1/2 of the bread, mushroom mixture, sausage and cheese. Repeat the layers, ending with the cheese.
3. In a medium sized mixing bowl, combine the eggs, milk, both mustards, nutmeg, 1 tsp. salt and 1/8 tsp. pepper. Pour over the sausage and cheese casserole. Cover the casserole and refrigerate overnight.
4. When ready to bake, sprinkle the parsley evenly over the top of casserole and bake (uncovered) in a preheated 350F oven for 1 hour or until bubbly. Serve immediately with fruit salar and crusty bread.
NOTES:
1. For a milder variation, substitute 1 1/3 c. chopped scallions (green onions) for the yellow onions and 3/4- 1 lb. American cheese for the cheddar.
2. The amt. of mushrooms and onions seems too low for this dish to prepare properly. It could use almost twice the amount.
3. To increase this to serve 12, increase all ingredients by an additional 1/2, use a 9x13 casserole dish, and bake for approx. 1 hr. 20 min.

From the Parish Nurses--
The Art of Listening
Practicing the art of listening gives us some freedom to listen in our own individual ways. My Mother tried to listen to each of her seven children. She had the daily responsibility of caring for the home and each child. She helped direct the work of the farm and depending on the season, the work was extensive. She did not have the leisure to practice the art of listening in a textbook way, for example, to focus on the speaker, make thoughtful eye contact or ask reflective questions. To me, her best listening time was while she was kneading and shaping the many loaves of bread and cinnamon rolls she baked. The repetitive actions of making loaves and rolls set a quiet rhythm that was made for telling her my stories, problems and triumphs.
The setting may be very different in our lives but we are no less charged with as many responsibilities and tasks of daily living. Every hour is filled with our work, home and family needs, child care and nurturing, jobs and volunteering.
We reach the end of the day with a sigh and try to find time to listen to our partner, family, friends. I am not recommending making bread or rolls but there may be activities that lend themselves to listening. Try to find that place in your life where you can listen with an art that is unique to you and all those who desire "listening" time with you.
