Thank you to the 141 households who have returned their Learn, Serve and Grow response form with their 2012 Plan for Financial Giving so far!

We are heartened to read the many ways our members plan to strengthen their faith this year and share their talents and financial resources at St. Mark's and beyond.  But unfortunately, this represents only about 1/3 or our congregation, so we hope that many more will respond this Sunday.  Christian stweardship of time, talent and treasure is the work of all followers of Jesus and an imporant part of spiritual health.  Extra forms are available at the Welcome Center and you will also find a basket there where you can place your response envelope.

What I Love About You . . . Growing in Gratitude

All are invited to this crossgenerational event on Sunday, November 13, 11:00am-1:00pm.  We have some fun activities planned and lunch will be provided.  Please RSVP at the Welcome Center or to Carol Guenther at carolg@smlutheran.org so we can plan the right amount of food.  Donations of pumpkin pies are most welcome!  This is a wonderful way to prepare for Thanksgiving, so put it on your calendar today!

From the Parish Nurses--

 Type 2 Diabetes

November is American Diabetes Month. Type 2 diabetes, once known as adult-onset, or non-insulin-dependent diabetes, is a chronic condition that affects the way your body metabolizes sugar (glucose), your body's main source of fuel.

When you have type 2 diabetes, your body is resistant to the effects of insulin, a hormone that regulates the movement of sugar into your cells, or your body doesn't produce enough insulin to maintain a normal glucose level. Untreated, the consequences of type 2 diabetes can be life-threatening.

There is no cure for type 2 diabetes, but you can manage -or even prevent- the condition. Start by eating healthy foods, exercising and maintaining a healthy weight. If diet and exercise aren't enough, you may need diabetes medications or insulin therapy to man age your blood sugar.

Type 2 diabetes symptoms may develop very slowly. In fact, you can have type 2 diabetes for years and not even know it.

Be alert to the following:

  • Increased thirst and frequent urination
  • Increased hunger
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow-healing sores or frequent infections

Areas of darkened skin usually in the armpits and neck.  This may be a sign of insulin resistance.

See your doctor if you are concerned about diabeted or if you notice any type 2 diabetes symptoms.

Next week we will look at the causes of this type of diabetes.
