"Come to Us Creative Spirit"

TEXTILES IN WORSHIP

One of the things we witness often in our worship services is baptism.  A wonderful way we use textiles in this congregation is the presentation of a baptismal quilt, a warm blanket made by one of our members, to symbolize the gift of acceptance, warmth and caring, given to the newly baptized.  The quilt is a tactile remembrance that God's love surrounds them, nurtures and keeps them connected in a very visible way.  The quilt is a work of art, designed and put together with love and purpose.  St. Mark's also gives quilts to high school youth when they graduate, as a constant reminder that they are loved and remembered by their church family.

Lutheran pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer lives in a new play,

In the face of the greatest evil of the 20th century, Dietrich Bonhoeffer battles questions of morality, political allegiance, and religious conviction. This true story will keep you on the edge of your seat as a tale of intrigue, conspiracy, and high treason unfolds."  St. Mark's member and professional actor, Matt Shimkus, will play the part of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. He invites the church community to this extraordinary piece of theatre, and is happy to answer any questions about the production.  THE BEAMS ARE CREAKING plays March 23 to April 23 at Taproot Theatre Co. in North Seattle.  For ticket information: www.taproottheatre.org or call 206-781-9707

What Can We Do to Help the People of Japan?

When Daniel Rift, director for the ELCA World Hunger and Disaster Appeal, was asked this question he said: "Within the first hour we heard requests for prayer from our partner churches. If you'd like to stand with them through your financial support, I would encourage you to give through ELCA Disaster Response. Gifts designated to the Pacific Earthquake and Tsunami fund will be used entirely -- 100 percent -- in response to this disaster Financial gifts for the Pacific Earthquake and Tsunami can be contributed through the ELCA website. Credit card gifts may be contributed by calling 1-800-638-3522. Gifts designated for the Pacific Earthquake and Tasunami can also be sent to: ELCA Disaster Response, 39330 Treasury Center, Chicago, IL 60694-9300. Gifts may also be sent to ELCA Disaster Response where the need is greatest, enabling the ELCA to respond where help is needed most around the world and close to home. Information about the Japan Evangelical Lutheran Church is at http://www.ELCA.org/japan on the ELCA website.

May 1 -- 4:30-6:30pm - Potluck

Join us in prayer for the people in Japan and all those affected by the Pacific Earthquake and Tsunami at a Japanese themed potluck on May 1 from 4:30-6:30pm.  Donations will be accepted and sent to the ELCA's Pacific Earthquake and Tsunami fund, 100% of which will be used for disaster response in Japan.

We will be assembling Health Care Kits for LWR...as the need is urgent to continue to supply these essential kits to those affected by disasters worldwide.  Starting on March 20 there will be a sign-up sheet for the potluck and our LWR box to collect Health Care Kit supplies.  All are welcome!  Thank you for your continued support of these events to help those in need, share in prayer and make a difference in our world.

Each Kit contains:  Hand Towel and Washcloth (dark colors), bar soap (4-5 oz), in original wrapping; toothbrush in its original packaging; one sturdy wide-toothed comb; one metal nail clippers, band-aids.

WE have enough supplies for most items to fill 81 Health Kits.  We only need 61 hand towels and 69 toothbrushes. That will bring us a total of 200 kits to ship on May 6th.  Please place items in the big red box.  May 1st is Quilt Sunday.  Financial donations are appreciated to help ship the quilts and kits.

Parish Nurse Notes on "Peace"

It does not mean to be in a place where there is

no noise, trouble or hard work.

It means to be in the midst of those things and

still be calm in your heart.
