Care of Creation Walk

The Care of Creation Committee is sponsoring an urban walk on Saturday, February 12.  Please meet at the church parking lot at 10:00 a.m. (rain or shine). Walkers will explore areas within Pt. Defiance Park together.  Please call or email Tom Hulst if you have any questions: (253) 460-2683. thulst@live.com

Visual Art Outing
Mark your calendars for Saturday, February 5th from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. to experience art as prayer through painting at Java and Clay Cafe in Gig Harbor.  Using the techniques used for Sunday morning adult forums throughout January, Visual Artist-in-Residence Danielle Lemieux will lead participants through a longer prayer-art session.  Cost:  $7.00 studio fee plus the cost of ceramic pieces (coffee/espresso also available to purchase).  Please visit www.javaclaycafe.com for information on costs and directions.  Please contact Danielle Lemieux if you have questions (danielle@smlutehran.org / 253-752-4966).

Art as Prayer

If you were unable to attend the 9:45 Adult Forums on Art as Prayer, please contact Danielle Lemieux for a packet outlining this process.  This information should be able to instruct you on how to use visual art and/or the act of creating visual art as another way to pray.  (danielle@smlutheran.org / 253-752-4966 x105).

Children's Spring Musical

On Wednesday, February 2nd, all children are invited to come audition for the Children's Spring Musical, Music Machine, between 6:00-7:00pm in the Music Wing Choir Room.  There are roles for just speaking as well as opportunities for solos.  Children interested in this should contact Danielle (danielle@smlutheran.org or 253-752-4966) for materials (CD and lines).  Children wanting to participate need to commit to the Jubilation Choir from 6:00-6:30pm every Wednesday evening until May 22nd (program date).  Questions, please contact Danielle.

LOTS OF LOVE...

              a Potluck for LWR!

February 13, 4:30-6:30pm

Join us for a Valentine's Eve Potluck, learn about the meaning of heart in scripture and around the world as we assemble healthcare kits and baby layettes for Lutheran World Relief on Valentine's Eve... with the families of the Sunday School!  Food items for the potluck should have a Valentine's theme and either include RED or be shaped like a heart (for example lasagna, chili, strawberry salad, heart shaped biscuits! ). Be creative, have fun and sign-up in the Narthex starting this Sunday!   All are welcome and needed.  This is an encore event to our successful Haitian dinner and Chili Cook-off where we shared fellowship and packed over 350 kits! We'll also have Valentine's treats for sale to raise funds to assist with the shipping of the healthcare kits. We look forward to seeing you there!

LWR HEALTHCARE KIT ITEMS NEEDED...can you help us by bringing in Healthcare Kit items to help us meet our goal of assembling 200 Healthcare Kits on Valentine's Eve? A container is in the Narthex to place your items.

Thank you for thinking of the folks who so desperately need basic healthcare items!

ITEMS NEEDED:

Hand Towels-dark colors

Wash Clothes-dark colors

Bar Soap-large bath size

Combs-large teeth

Nail clippers or metal files

Malaria Nets

You may have noticed the Malaria Net display in the Commons.  Malaria is a major concern in many parts of the world and the ELCA and Lutheran World Relief are promoting the sale of malaria nets to save the lives of people.  Ten dollars will buy a net and get it where it is needed.  A member of our church has offered to match the gifts so you will get two for the price of one!  The display will be up again on February 13 when we are having a special Lutheran World Relief kit packing event.  Consider the special way to save lives. Malaria nets will be displayed on our LWR kit packing day the 13th.  A member of our church has agreed to match any gift of $10 given for a malaria net.  Imagine, you'll get two for the price of one!

Good News for Grace Upon Grace

The Neeb Family Foundation has offered St. Mark's a generous Challenge Grant for 2011. They have agreed to match up to $25,000.00 in new funds given, promised or pledged to Grace Upon Grace after February 1, 2011 and before December 31, 2011 and we are most grateful for their support. If you have not made a pledge yet to help us meet and exceed our monthly mortgage payments, here's your chance to double your impact! SPORTS DRINKS:

Because sports drinks contain significant amounts of sugar and other sweeteners, doctors and dietitians recommend that you give them only to young athletes who are going to be involved in vigorous physical activity that lasts an hour or more.  Fluid replacement drinks can be given an hour or less before physical activity or during physical activity.  If activity lasts less than an hour, water is best.

When buying sports drinks, look for non-caffeinated, non-carbonated drinks that contain between 0 and 19 grams of carbohydrate per 8-ounce (oz.)  serving.  Research shows that this carbohydrate concentration promotes rapid fluid replacement.  Look for sodium levels between 50-170 milligrams (mg) per 8-oz serving and a potassium level between 30-50 mg per 8-oz serving.
