Growin' Greenhouses
If you've driven by Grow Benzie you've probably seen the activity there.  We've now completed the renovation of the South greenhouse, leaving the greenhouse in the middle without a roof but still enclosed.  It will be used for more gardening areas.

Grow Benzie and Salsa

salsa kids

Since this past fall Grow Benzie volunteers have been working with the children at Platte River Elementary on a variety of food projects.  Seen above are children sampling several types of salsa which were then voted on and the winner was a peach salsa that was offered at the salad bar the next day.  Jackie Hice, has been very active helping out, picking tomatoes from our greenhouse and taking them to school, working with the children at lunch time educating them as to what to do and what not do in composting, and helping with  the salsa making.  She was also involved in the tasting sessions with Daniel Marbury of FoodCorps, where they tasted zucchini and butternut squash.  Another project was dehydrating apples in Sarah Slade's class where the apples were then shaped into an American flag and served to Vets on Veterans Day.

Grow Benzie is continuing to work with FoodCorp's Daniel Marbury to develop a series of workshops/classes to be held this spring and fall at Grow Benzie.  These classes will be focused on healthy, seasonal, and affordable home cooking for children and their parents. A theme running through all of these sessions will be kitchen management with an emphasis on cost savings and the excitement and variety of local food.  Other workshops may include presentations and visits from local food producers to educate about and to celebrate our local food system. Click Here to read more about proposed classes.
