We were fortunate to have had as our first event held in our newly renovated facility, 'Big Blue", be the joint meeting of the board members from Benzie Central and Frankfort-Elberta schools. It was an evening to behold with food service manager Renee Dewindt providing a spectacular dinner including local foods, Benzie Central's Chorus giving a lively and delightful performance and State Rep. Dan Scripps in attendance. What a pleasure to have these two groups who work so closely together for the well being of our community be our first event. It was wonderful to see the building come alive with good food, good music, and great company.

Non-profits, Big Events How do they relate to the vision - "Grow Healthy Children in Benzie County"?
It is all about food- teach a child to grow food and his interest grows; teach a child how to prepare food and his respect for nutrition expands to making better choices; put a child in the presence of a teaching, mentoring adult and his self esteem blossoms, fostering an interest in wellness, exercise and a better life.
That is Grow Benzie's mantra- if we are going to war with obesity and the horrible side effects we have to start young- plant a seed; grow a vegetable, cook, eat, and exercise properly and a thousand things begin to "Go Right"- health, attitude, self confidence. Too many of our children are not even given a chance- fast food, poor nutrition, destructive diets, and no exercise. It is well documented from the White House's Victory Garden to obscene health care costs. Grow Benzie is a small start to a healthier lifestyle and a reversal of this cycle.
We cannot wait for the bureaucracy "to fund" and "save the day". America was built on community service - one family taking care of another - helping hands- barn raisings- give and help. Grow Benzie embodies all of the above - Help Us.
We need money, we need to inspire people to volunteer and mentor - the Big Event is about raising money, and communicating with the community one way to help our children. Everyone can help: volunteers, donors, mentors, teachers- there is a role for anyone and everyone. Take the first step and help children grow.

Things are moving at Grow Benzie, - dirt that is.
Gardens have been prepped, which is a major task in the spring, with thanks to Mike Morris of Crystal Downs who helps us get our gardens plowed and readied.
The rest of the dirt moving is on a larger scale as we close our entrance to M115, create a safer entrance to Grow Benzie off Fox Lane, add more parking spaces and a bus turn around area. Hopefully, all the dust will be settled in a week or so and you can see the work in progress. Our deadline is to have everything readied for our first Farmer's Market on June 2.
