February 2011
Greetings!

Well I planned on writing this a little sooner & including lots of useful information on new products, the leaf & pellet hop availablities for this year, wine & beer competitions, hop rhizomes, etc. But as we all know, life seems to throw curve balls all the time & this one really is a pain in the ear. I have fairly recently acquired an awful cold-turned sinus infection from my lovely son, who attends one of the local disease-atoriums (aka schools) . This never-ending plague has again made a turn for the worst. I am sitting here now with a ruptured eardrum. Ouch. But, you know, in thinking about it, it really puts a whole new perspective on how much I appreciate my other ear. The one without the ruptured ear drum is infection free & the part I like best about it is it does not make a constant ringing sound. On the other side of my head, I don't really like that ear so much right now... It is always there, reminding me of its presence, as my other, more well-behaved ear is just sitting in silence, taking in the sounds from outside without chiming in & making a distraction of itself.  Enough of this rambling, when I'm feeling less fevered & more productive I plan on sending an email in a few weeks with product information, price changes, etc. In the meantime, I'm giving you the important time-sensitive stuff.
Hop Rhizomes

If you are interested in growing your own for making beer, or just for fun, go to our brewing supplies page on our website & you can find a list of the available rhizome varieties for 2011. You will also find a link to a rhizome planting & care guide that details in a concise 5 pages how to grow your own hops.

Mostly hops like a sunny location with well-drained soil.  It suggests to plant hops of the same variety atleast 3 ft apart, & different cultivars a good 5 ft apart, so you can actually tell where one vine ends & next begins. The rhizomes will be $5.50 each, but if you purchase 5 or more, they are $5.00 each.  They should arrive March 25th-ish & if you'd like to secure your choice of rhizomes, place your pre-orders by 8 AM, Monday, February 28th. (Yes that is this coming Monday!)

For more information, you can visit our brew & wine supply page on our website & scroll down to "hops & rhizomes" or just click the links above.

Wine & Beer Competitions

If you make some good stuff, send it to the judges to see how you measure up!

Also on our supply page, you can find a listing of popular amateur wine & beer competitions going on for 2011 along with links to the competition websites, rules, & deadlines.

One deadline has already passed & another is quickly approaching so if you are interested in sending yours in so you can tell your friends you are making award-winning beer or wine, then be quick about it & visit our website to see what competitions are out there. I have links to winners for the Indy International Wine Competition's previous years. (That one is popular here in Indiana amongst homewinemakers so there might be some names you'll recognize.)

A major bonus of the Indy & the Winemaker Magazine's competitions, is if you win a medal (gold, silver, or bronze) with a Winexpert wine kit (they are the maker of the kits we stock), give us a list of your winning results, we'll fax it in to our wholesaler & you will get a free wine kit of your choice of equal or lesser value (or a credit towards a higher valued wine kit).  Thats a pretty sweet deal, right?  Unless you like drier wines, then would it be dry? Anyways, check it out & I'll try to stop being so punny.

And for the homebrewers out there, look into entering the Indy Brewer's Cup. One of the top award winners of 2010 got an opportunity to brew at Rock Bottom Brewery!  Or at Upland's UpCup, the lucky winner gets to brew their beer inhouse at Upland & have their beer served in the brewery in Bloomington, the taproom in Indy & their beer will be entered in the 2011 Great American Beer Fest Pro-Am Competition and US Beer Tasting Championship.

Hop on over to our supply page for the list of competitions :)

Learn To Brew

Matt's Brew Classes-  Come learn how to make your own great beer at home! Matt just started this a couple weeks ago.  Cost per person is $15, which is pretty cheap! The first class was a great success. The next class is this Sunday, the 27th, from Noon to 3pm.  He will have his brew gear with him to show you how to brew with a typical extract recipe. In addition, there will be much discussion on bottling, sanitation, yeast and fermentation along with lots of tips to help make the best beer possible. You will even get to taste the beer he made from the first class! His third class will focus on all-grain brewing & will be sometime in middle March.

Learn to brew if you make wine or if you brew with extracts & want to see an all-grain batch in action, sign up for the next class! If you are a beginner, we suggest first attending an extract class, but this Sunday's class only has two spots left, so you better hurry if you want in on this one!)

The classes will run approximately every two weeks and there's a limit of 8 people per class. Email Amy, re: brew class, or call us at 812-339-7233 to reserve your spot today!
