LIGHT UP THE WORLD
Fall Update
Greetings!

The past summer was one of busiest having completed installations and training in eight communities. As a result more than 7,000 people have access to electricity to power lights, cell phones, radios, computers and lab equipment in their community clinics, schools or full-time in their homes. We've now installed more than 200 systems this year and more importantly, trained more than 50 local technicians on how to work with solar photovoltaic technology, installing and maintaining systems.

Read below and click on images for highlights of some of the projects we completed this summer as well as upcoming events in the next quarter. We hope to see you at our Solar Workshop in October or to celebrate the legacy of Nichola Goddard in November with the Goddard family.

All the best!

SOLAR PV WORKSHOP
October 20, 2012 - 9:30 am to 3:00 pm

Join us on October 20th for a Solar Workshop in Calgary! This session, facilitated by LUTW's Program Director, Christoph Schultz, will introduce you to the basics of solar photovoltaic (PV) technology. The focus will be on off-grid, low-voltage systems similar to those that LUTW designs and installs in remote communities. The workshop fee is $65 ($35 for students). Lunch and materials will be provided, and all proceeds go to support LUTW's program activities. The registration deadline is this Friday October 12th at 5 pm, more event details are available here.

LIGHT UP CUSIBAMBA
Texas Tech University World Energy Project

August 2012 Yauricocha

In August, students from Texas Tech University helped with the installation of 30 solar PV systems in off-grid homes in the district of Yauricocha.

Yauricocha is about two hours from the capital of Huancavelica, there are no paved roads, running water, latrines or other basic services.

LUTW and our partners installed a 25W solar PV system for lighting, charging cell phones and listening to the radio in each home. The solar home system comes with four lights that emit 300 lumens each. The new bright lights not only enable families to read and be productive in the evenings, but also cost significantly less than buying disposable batteries or burning diesel wick lanterns, which is how they used to obtain light in their homes prior to the project.

SOLAR PV FOR EL TIGRE
3 Medical Centres Equipped in the Amazon

In July, LUTW installed three large solar PV systems at medical posts in Piura, Intuto and Libertad.

The post in Intuto serves approximately 2,500 people in the immediate area. The 1.1 kiloWatt installation is the largest system LUTW has installed in Peru so far. Click on the photo to view the Facebook photo album.

In this village in Guatemala, nearly 1,000 families (6,000 people) are without power. LUTW is currently fundraising for another project phase which would install systems in another 40 homes and provide more training for local technicians. To support this next phase of the project, please visit our website.
