Hilary Harper-Wilcoxen

Hilary Harper-Wilcoxen, Chair/Theater and Dance Department at Principia College, has spearheaded an interdisciplinary pilot dance program to be conducted by Tudor Répétiteurs Amanda McKerrow and John Gardner, December 27 to January 1.

The program will introduce master choreographer Antony Tudor into college and university dance programs through a series of master classes focusing on Tudor's masterpiece, Jardin aux Lilas. The experimental, interdisciplinary week will look at this classic ballet from the perspective of various arts' disciplines.

Plans are under way for a documentary to be part of the process.

Nancy Zeckendorf on Antony Tudor:

Nancy Zeckendorf with Bliss family - 1968
Nancy Zeckendorf with Mr. Tudor and extended Bliss Family in 1968
Nancy Zeckendorf, dancer, dear Tudor friend and philanthropist, presented her eulogy for Antony Tudor at his memorial in 1987. Enjoy this excerpt, and click the link to read more!

"I first met Tudor at Juilliard and studied with him there and at the old Met. He was then Director of The Metropolitan Opera Ballet, where we also worked together. He was my teacher, my favorite choreographer, my mentor, my inspiration, my conscience, but he was also my friend; and, in our later years a mutual trust seemed to have allowed me the role of go between and helper.

Last August I received a letter from Tudor asking me to accompany him to The Kennedy Center for the Honors Award. He went on in the letter to lament, "even I will probably have to go through the tortures of a black tie, and probably tight shoes; and it will play hell with my old man routine."

But he dutifully went out to Syms and purchased the most elegant tuxedo. He hadn't worn one in years and he even managed to find a pair of comfortable shoes...."

Tudor's Influence on Kirk Peterson's Sleeping Beauty for Alberta Ballet:
Kirk with Dancers - Alberta - Sleeping - 1
Kirk Peterson, Trust Répétiteur, rehearses his Sleeping Beauty with Alberta Ballet

"The 'entrada' that I created for the Grand Pas de Deux from the final act in The Sleeping Beauty is a direct tribute to Antony Tudor and my experience in having worked with him on ABT's Sleeping Beauty

when I was still dancing there.

Mr. Tudor's theatrical logic in his approach to all his work was apparent in The Sleeping Beauty and it is an approach that I sought to emulate when conceptualizing my production, particularly regarding the mime interactions of all of the characters."
