Mark B. Bliss, Editor of The Tudor Centennial Commemorative Book, Shares Memories of his Godfather: |
Mark Bliss with Antony Tudor and Nancy Zeckendorf |
"I got a kick out of his English accent. Nobody I knew had a godfather from another country and that was very cool. He always had a sparkle in his eye and a playful wink would follow. His laughter was infectious, even though I didn't get most of his jokes. He didn't condescend when speaking to me, and would always include me in the adult conversation. He gave me unique gifts, including books that I still have today. The picture in this blog is my most treasured memory of Tudor. He and my wonderful godmother, Nancy Zeckendorf, took me to see The Black Stallion, which was my favorite book as a kid.
Before I took on the job as editor of the book and website, I knew only a little more of Tudor than I did as a kid. This project not only allowed me to play a part in preserving his legacy, it was also an opportunity to learn about the Tudor I didn't know. Reading all the books about him, sorting through archival photographs, reviewing remembrances of his impact on others lives; all of these things helped me to understand who my godfather was. I am proud of the effort the team put into this project. My mother was a fabulous resource, as our leader and chief historian. Tara Moira McBride was the planner, focusing our meetings and figuring out the logistics of this monumental task. And Adria Rolnik, having served as Centennial Celebration event coordinator and now as archivist, took inventory of our vast photo collection and tracked down the needed permissions for each one. The result is our terrific website and now a book that I think everyone will find was worth the wait..."

William Soleau, Tudor Trust Webmaster & Choreographer, on the NEA Award: |
William Soleau |
I
I'm very excited to be working on this next step in the development for the Antony Tudor Ballet Trust website. This award grant from the NEA will allow us to continue our efforts to preserve Tudor ballets for future generations. Our goal is to digitize each Tudor ballet in its entirety and then create short excerpts of the works that will be available to the public from our website.
My goal as a webmaster and video editor is to create a seamless interface that allows the public to quickly load and watch any of the excerpted ballets that we have preserved and edited specifically for the website. It is our intention that not only will this help introduce and educate the global public about the works of Mr. Tudor, but also allow Directors and Educators to see what ballets are available for possible restaging on their own companies.
I personally am quite thrilled to be a part of this fantastic team Sally Bliss has assembled to further Antony Tudor's legacy. Many years ago I had the pleasure of being coached by Mr. Tudor in one of his ballets, it was an amazing moment for me as a dancer which I will always remember. When I stopped dancing and began my own choreographic career, I was always greatly influenced by his works and I feel I still am to this day. So in a sense, I feel I've come full circle to be working with a group which is helping to preserve the ballets of this truly great master. I feel honored and humbled to be associated with such dedicated people who have made this website a reality. |

Lilac Garden staged at The Royal Ballet School |
Kirk Peterson | |
Kirk Peterson, Trust Répétiteur, has just returned from staging Lilac Garden for the Royal Ballet School senior students.
According to Kirk, "This happening was a somewhat momentous event considering the Royal Ballet itself has not done Lilac Garden since 1968 and 1970. And it is all due to the School Director Gailene Stock having danced Hagar in Pillar of Fire for Mr. Tudor in Australia and consequently falling in love with his work."
In-house performances of Lilac Garden were presented on May 5 and 6, and the ballet will be performed once again on the main stage of the Royal Opera House on Sunday, July 11.
