Diana Byer, Artistic Director of New York Theatre Ballet, answers questions about staging and performing the works of Antony Tudor:
How do you prepare to stage a Tudor Ballet? What is the most challenging aspect of staging the work?
"I was lucky to have learned the Fandango and Little Improvisations from Mr. Tudor, the pas de deux from Romeo & Juliet from Airi Hynnenin and Jardin aux Lilas, Les Mains Gauches and Judgment of Paris from Sallie Wilson. I draw on everything they taught me when I stage a Tudor ballet. The most challenging aspect of staging his work is finding a way to guide the dancers into leaving themselves - not so much acting as truly becoming the character in the ballet. How important the smallest detail is and making each gesture real, with meaning. And of course, respecting Tudor's impeccable musicality of phrasing and not just counts."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------What, if anything, can dancers/directors do to best prepare for doing a Tudor Ballet prior to the repetiteur setting the work?
"Watch DVD's of the best interpreters of the Tudor repertory. Study thoughout the learning process the period of the dance, explore every aspect of the characters, all, not just your own. Let your imagination come alive. Quiet time to reflect on the character is just as important as perfecting the style and technique. This is also rehearsing."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Which Tudor ballet performance(s) is most vivid and memorable to you?
"Sallie Wilson in Pillar of Fire and Jardin aux Lilas; Cynthia Gregory, Sallie Wilson and Eleanor D'Antuono in Gala Performance, and every cast I've ever seen in Dark Elegies, Echoing of Trumpets, and Dim Lustre."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After going through the staging process, what are your feelings, watching the Tudor work you've just staged, being performed?
"It depends on whether or not I've succeeded as a stager in getting my knowledge across to each dancer in a way that they can give a performance that is respectable to Tudor's genius."
