FAQs
Question: Can anyone come to a PTA meeting? Will I automatically get "volunteered" for something?

Answer: Yes and no! Yes, we encourage everyone to come to meetings. Lots of news is presented, including updates on PTA events and Mr. Fuqua's school updates. You can learn a ton at these things! We promise we will not assign you a job, but you might want one. We really do want to hear voices from all grades, new and old families, everyone!

Check out our FAQs section on the website and send any questions to  Ask Chester and we'll answer them here and/or on the website.
Chesterbrook PTA Digest

No.4, September 13, 2012

It was great to see some new faces at the PTA meeting Tuesday night! We'll look forward to seeing more at the Back to School Night PTA meeting and future meetings!

Don't forget to complete your Room Parent Interest Form and Volunteer Interest Form. Both were in the Back to School Folders, and these are how we fill these critical needs. For other open volunteer positions, see below.

Other important dates:

  • Before and After School Activity Registration, TONIGHT, Thursday, September 13th, 7 pm, PTA website
  • Back to School Night: Wednesday, September 19th, 6:30 pm. Please note this is not our usual Tuesday evening, but a Wednesday this year. Teachers will be provided dinner by the PTA. Look out for information on a new format for the evening.
  • Our second annual 5k Run: Saturday, October 6th (Partnering with Vinson Hall and the Wounded Warriors. Start your training now and see details below.)

A final word, as many of you know, our database cannot be updated until after school begins. If you have graduated or moved, you are welcome to Unsubscribe using the link at the bottom. Please do not unsubscribe if your children still attend Chesterbrook. This list is also used by Principal Fuqua for school newsletters and emergency announcements.

Enjoy the nice weather,
2012-2013 Chesterbrook PTA Board

Before- and After-School Activities
The PTA will again provide a robust program of activities that will supplement the outstanding curriculum our children receive at Chesterbrook. Registration for the activities will begin TONIGHT on the website (Thursday, September 13, 2012) at 7 pm. Click here to learn more about the activities and check back often as we get more details posted. We have several new activities and changes to the popular chess club, including unlimited capacity! Flyers were sent home in your Thursday folder last week, plus some additional ones today. If you have any questions, please email afterschool@chesterbrookpta.org.

Note that you do not need to complete the Emergency Form prior to registration this year. In fact, to simplify our system for our web folks, we are going back to a paper form. Please complete it and make a copy for each activity and for each child, and then submit it to the office. Registration will be cancelled if emergency forms are not submitted.
PTA Memberships

Membership Sales are ongoing; in fact, we've only registered 55% of families so far, so we are missing many of you!  Go to the PTA website to pay your dues. Why? Members get a free Family Directory (nonmember price is $8) and are supporting the many enrichment programs the PTA delivers! Last year we achieved 100% percent membership (thanks Maryam Redjaee, VP-Membership) -- let's try to match it!

It's also time to redesignate your grocery cards--this must be done every year. This is great, FREE, money for Chesterbrook! Last year our proceeds were about $8000, not the $2000 we reported last week -- MORE WOW!  Giant, Safeway, and Harris Teeter cards work, as does Target's Visa card. You can redesignate your cards in several ways:

While you are thinking about free money, we also are an Amazon affiliate, which means that a portion of each purchase comes back to the school when you begin your shopping at our Amazon link, which is also on our website. Bookmark it! And keep saving those Box Tops--more information to follow soon!
Back to School Night Change of Schedule
This year, due to our increased school enrollment, Back to School Night will be structured a bit differently. There will be no meeting and presentation in the gym. Specialists will be available to meet and answer questions in the Media Center at 6 pm. And there will be a PTA meeting in the cafeteria at 6:30 to review and vote on our budget, as well as meeting the officers. You may review our 2012-2013 Proposed Budget on our website and send any questions several days ahead of Back to School Night to Beth Mahood, PTA President.

At 7 pm (not 7:30 as in the past!) you will go to your child's classroom for staff introductions and speakers presented over our television system, followed by teachers presenting their classroom information. The second session to visit another teacher for families with more than one student will follow.
Family Directory Updates
This year we are trying a new strategy with our Family Directory. We are going to use the information from the registration materials you have on file with the school, except for those who have already opted out through FCPS. If you have different information than is on file, you should email it to directory@chesterbrookpta.org. A few reasons for information being different include:
  • You've moved (in which case you need to notify the school immediately anyway).
  • You have a work email on file that is fine for emergencies, but don't want to use it for playdate planning.
  • Dad's work phone is listed and he doesn't have any business planning a playdate -- sorry dads who are perfectly able to! -- and you'd like not to list it.

So you may add or delete emails and cell phones as necessary, or provide any other updates you'd like. If you have already opted out with the school, you may still provide us any amount of information you would like printed in the Directory.

We hope this will be a simpler system, both for the volunteers who create the Directory and to get the Directory in your hands sooner than in the past. Thank you for your cooperation!

PTA 2012-2013 Openings
We are still looking to fill positions on the PTA Board. Don't wait for us to find you! We don't know who is ready to step up until you tell us. Please review and consider any ways you can help. If there is something you'd like to do that is not on the list, then please let us know by emailing the Nominating Committee.  Working with the PTA is rewarding and a great way to make new friends!!

Weekly Digest Editor(s): Prepares and sends weekly email to PTA members about upcoming Chesterbrook events and noteworthy news. This can be done by several editors, alternating weeks or separating aspects of production. If we cannot find new editors, we may cut back on the frequency of publication. Contact digest@chesterbrookpta.org
for more information. **critical need now**  UPDATE: THANKS TO THOSE WHO MET THIS MORNING ABOUT THE NEWSLETTERS. WE CAN STILL USE MORE HELP THOUGH!

Fun Fair: We are looking for volunteers to join the Fun Fair committee to help plan and coordinate next year's event. There are a wide range of volunteer opportunities available.  This is our biggest on-site fundraiser, a terrific way to meet other Chesterbrook parents, make friends and a lot of fun! Contact funfair@chesterbrookpta.org for more information.

Auction: If you are interested in helping out with the online auction next year, please contact Julia Nelson. We are making some changes in how we run the auction and welcome all new ideas! It's a fun team!
McLean 5k/Run with the Warriors (October 6th, www.mclean5k.org)
The McLean 5k and Vinson Hall's Run with the Warriors have joined forces, so come out on October 6th and support our community and wounded warriors! Great prizes and vacation packages are available, as well as a great time for our kids/families.

Chesterbrook has teamed up in helping to organize the race. Children and families can participate in a 1.5 mile fun run or the 5k race, which starts/finishes at Century 21 (near Balducci's) and goes through downtown McLean.   Parents and families can run the race or sponsor a warrior. Click here for more information and to register.

Chester is looking for 20 volunteers from our 6th grade class to help out at the water stations. If your child is interested, please email Rick Barnard. And yes, Chester will be running the race again this year!! Please save the date and visit the website to learn more on participating in the race: www.mclean5k.org
MyLunchMoney.com
lunch sticker Have you ever seen this sticker? When your child comes home with one, it means his or her lunch account is running low. You can avoid this by signing up with mylunchmoney.com and setting an automatic reload point. For a small fee, they will reload the lunch account in any amount. Through the website, you can also review what your child has purchased in the past week. You can sign up even if you have already paid in the cafeteria--it will just get added to your child's account.
