| FAQs | Question: I heard that Longfellow and McLean HS get a ton of money just for shopping through Amazon. Why don't we do that?
Answer: We do! Use (or bookmark) the Amazon link on the PTA website, chesterbrookpta.org, to get to Amazon. Any and every purchase through our PTA Amazon link counts, including books, clothes, music downloads, Kindle purchases, on-demand movies...everything! We earn 4-10 percent of every item sold and shipped, depending on the item and total number shipped each month. This is FREE money for us!

Chesterbrook PTA Weekly Digest
No. 2, August 27, 2012
Thank you to those who helped assemble and distribute school supply kits last week--we appreciate all your hard work! The deadline to order PTA supply kits has passed. If you did not order a kit, you can find the supply lists on the school website. All items should be available at Office Depot (or at least that's where the supply kit team found them).
Recorders, assignment notebooks, headphones, Quick Word Books, and writing tablets are available from the School Store during the first week of school BEFORE the bell rings from 8:25 - 9:00 am. Please do not send money to your teachers and ask them to handle your order. We kindly ask that parents pay with checks made out to Chesterbrook PTA or exact change.
- 2nd grade writing tablet, $2.00
- 2nd grade Quick Word book, $2.00
- Assignment notebook (for 3-6th graders), $5.00. Please note that the assignment notebook was included in the full supply kit.
- Musical Recorder, $5.00. 3rd and 4th graders are asked to have 2 recorders, one for school and one for home.
- Headphones, for Kindergarten or new students only, $6.00
If you purchased a PTA supply kit, the above items were included.
We still need a number of volunteers (including students who need service hours) to help assembly Back to School Folders on Wednesday, August 29 from 5 to 8 pm. Sign up HERE.
A couple notes about Open House on Friday:
- The last kindergarten playdate will be held immediately following the kindergarten open house at 10:30 am (not at 3 pm). Of course kindergartners are welcome to come back at 3 for the Ice Cream Social.
- Bring cash or checks to purchase Spirit Wear in the cafeteria. We have a supply of t-shirts, sweatshirts, and car magnets on hand, plus we will be accepting orders for our new design.
- Bring cash or checks to the cafeteria to join the PTA ($10 single members, $20 for families); membership includes a free Family Directory. Or better yet, do it online right now!
- PTA Officers and others will be in the cafeteria and on the playground to answer any questions about anything related to our school. We will also be accepting volunteers for just about everything we do!
- The Annual Ice Cream Social begins at 3 pm on the playground. Treats are available as supplies last. Please be sure to join your child on the playground - this is not a drop off event.
Other important dates:
- First Day of School: Tuesday, September 4th.
- PTA meeting: Tuesday, September 11th, 8:30 am
- Back to School Night: Wednesday, September 19th. Please note this is not our usual Tuesday evening, but a Wednesday this year. Teachers will be provided dinner by the PTA. Look out for information on a new format for the evening.
- Our second annual 5k Run: Saturday, October 6th (Partnering with Vinson Hall and the Wounded Warriors. Start your training now and see details below.)
A final word, as many of you know, our database cannot be updated until after school begins. If you have graduated or moved, you are welcome to Unsubscribe using the link at the bottom. Please do not unsubscribe if your children still attend Chesterbrook. This list is also used by Principal Fuqua for school newsletters and emergency announcements.

Membership Sales are ongoing. Did you know you can join the PTA online? Go to the PTA website to pay your dues. Why? Members get a free Family Directory (nonmember price is $8) and are supporting the many enrichment programs the PTA delivers! Last year we achieved 100% percent membership (thanks Maryam Redjaee, VP-Membership) -- let's try to match it!

| Back to School Folder Assembly |  It's easy, we'll make it fun, and it's a great way to get the new school year rolling! We're hoping for 10-12 parents and a few middle school students seeking volunteer hours. We'll gather in the cafeteria Wednesday evening, August 29th from 5-8pm, but we'll take you for as long as we can have you! If you have questions, contact Melissa Abelev or 202-670-6248. | We are still looking to fill positions on the PTA Board. Don't wait for us to find you! We don't know who is ready to step up until you tell us. Please review and consider any ways you can help. If there is something you'd like to do that is not on the list, then please let us know by emailing the Nominating Committee. Working with the PTA is rewarding and a great way to make new friends!!
Weekly Digest Editor(s): Prepares and sends weekly email to PTA members about upcoming Chesterbrook events and noteworthy news. This can be done by several editors, alternating weeks or separating aspects of production. If we cannot find new editors, we may cut back on the frequency of publication. Website Assistant: Assists webmaster with updating website and managing website orders, including activity registrations. Contact nominating@chesterbrookpta.org for more information. **critical need now**
Fun Fair: We are looking for volunteers to join the Fun Fair committee to help plan and coordinate next year's event. There are a wide range of volunteer opportunities available. This is our biggest on-site fundraiser, a terrific way to meet other Chesterbrook parents, make friends and a lot of fun! Contact funfair@chesterbrookpta.org for more information.
Auction: If you are interested in helping out with the online auction next year, please contact Julia Nelson. We are making some changes in how we run the auction and welcome all new ideas! It's a fun team!

Before- and After-School Activities
|
With school starting in just a couple weeks, it's time to start thinking about before- and after-school activities! The PTA will again provide a robust program of activities that will supplement the outstanding curriculum our children receive at Chesterbrook. Registration for the activities will begin on the website Thursday, September 13, 2012 at 7 pm. Click here to learn more about the activities and check back often as we get more details posted. We have several new activities and changes to the popular chess club. Flyers will also be sent home in the Back to School folder as well as the children's Thursday folders. | McLean 5k/Run with the Warriors (October 6th, www.mclean5k.org) | The McLean 5k and Vinson Hall's Run with the Warriors have joined forces, so come out on October 6th and support our community and wounded warriors! Great prizes and vacation packages are available, as well as a great time for our kids/families.
Chesterbrook has teamed up in helping to organize the race. Children and families can participate in a 1.5 mile fun run or the 5k race, which starts/finishes at Century 21 (near Balducci's) and goes through downtown McLean. Parents and families can run the race or sponsor a warrior. Click here for more information and to register.
Chester is looking for 20 volunteers from our 6th grade class to help out at the water stations. If your child is interested, please email Rick Barnard.
