FAQs | Question: I heard that Longfellow and McLean HS get a ton of money just for shopping through Amazon. Why don't we do that?
Answer: We do! Use (or bookmark) the Amazon link on the PTA website, chesterbrookpta.org, to get to Amazon. Any and every purchase through our PTA Amazon link counts, including books, clothes, music downloads, Kindle purchases, on-demand movies...everything! We earn 4-10 percent of every item sold and shipped, depending on the item and total number shipped each month. This is FREE money for us!
Check out our FAQs section on the website and end any questions to Ask Chester and we'll answer them here and/or on the website.

School Supply Kits
|
School Supply Lists will be posted on the school website in July--but there's no need to think about that now. Just remember that the Chesterbrook PTA offers complete school supply kits for each grade, including Kindergarten. Buy your School Supply Kits online and avoid trips to multiple stores to gather all the needed supplies. This is also a fundraiser for our school!
Everybody wins when you buy PTA School Supply Kits
- Teachers win when kids buy PTA School Supply kits because it gives them exactly what they need in the classroom.
- Chesterbrook wins because the PTA can raise money to purchase new equipment for our school and students.
- You win more time at the beach and less time shopping (with the rest of crowds)!
Support your school and support your teachers. The supply lists are created by the teachers and include specific items that are used in the classroom all year long. PTA does all the shopping for you and distributes School Supply Kits to your child's classroom.
Watch for emails in July announcing when Supply Kits are available. Kits can be purchased online at www.chesterbrookpta.org and paid for by credit card. You can pay for multiple students at the same time and in a matter of minutes you can do all your back to school supply shopping-from the comfort of your beach chair! School Supply kits will be available online through August 23.
Please Note: Supply Kits will not be sold during Open House or after school begins.
Buy early and be prepared before school begins!

FCPS Summer Reading
| As many of you know, many teachers pass along some summer activities for kids to keep their minds moving, and research shows many students start school in the fall well behind where they left off in the spring in math and language arts. To ameliorate this drop, FCPS provides a suggested reading list for upper grade students. This list includes a wide variety of books to appeal to the interests and reading levels of many students. Parents are encouraged to review book selections with their children in order to help them make appropriate choices. Students may select books from this list, or they may read a comparable book that is approved by their parents.
Additional suggestions can also be found in reading lists developed by Fairfax County Public Library at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/library and Virginia Readers' Choice at http://vsra.org/VRC.html.
And don't forget the library's summer reading program for all ages!
Get ready to enjoy "Dream Big - Read!" during the 2012 Summer Reading Program at the Fairfax County Public Library. You can register online or in person at your local library branch beginning June 15. Preschoolers through high schoolers earn a coupon book with great prizes including free and discounted items by completing their reading and going to their local library branch by September 1. Activities are planned for families, preschoolers, school-age youngsters, teens and adults throughout the summer. Pick up a copy of the Summer Reading Program calendar at your local branch or search the calendar of events on the website. |
PTA 2012-2013 Openings
| We are still looking to fill positions on the PTA Board for next year. Don't wait for us to find you! We don't know who is ready to step up until you tell us. Please review and consider any ways you can help. If there is something you'd like to do that is not on the list, then please let us know by emailing nominating@chesterbrookpta.org. Working with the PTA is rewarding and a great way to make new friends!!
Weekly Digest Editor(s): Prepares and sends weekly email to PTA members about upcoming Chesterbrook events and noteworthy news. This can be done by several editors, alternating weeks or separating aspects of production. If we cannot find new editors, we may cut back on the frequency of publication. Contact digest@chesterbrookpta.org for more information. Fun Fair: We are looking for volunteers to join the Fun Fair committee to help plan and coordinate next year's event. There are a wide range of volunteer opportunities available. This is our biggest on-site fundraiser, a terrific way to meet other Chesterbrook parents, make friends and a lot of fun! Contact funfair@chesterbrookpta.org for more information.
Auction: If you are interested in helping out with the online auction next year, please contact Julia Nelson. We are making some changes in how we run the auction and welcome all new ideas! Its a fun team!
Hospitality: Co-Chair needed to help coordinate several events for school staff throughout the year: Back to School Night supper, Holiday treats, Teacher Appreciation Luncheon. This position allows for a ton of creativity and can be taken in many directions in the future. We have a graduating parent who has done this job for many years and would love to have someone start gradually and spend some time "in training" over the next year. Please contact hospitality@chesterbrookpta.org for more information.
After School Chess Manager: Chess club will be run by an outside vendor in the coming year, which will make significantly less work for the PTA manager. Manager needed to coordinate with school on space reservations and serve as liaison with vendor providing chess instruction. Does not require attendance at chess classes, nor managing website registration. For more information, please contact nominating@chesterbrookpta.org.
After School Drama Manager: Coordinates with instructor on schedule, assists webmaster with registration and emergency forms. Does not require attendance at drama classes. For more information, please contact nominating@chesterbrookpta.org. Special Education Coordinator: Coordinates informational programs for special education families and teachers. This is a loosely defined job and allows for a lot of flexibility and creativity on the part of the coordinator. Contact nominating@chesterbrookpta.org for more information.
Cultural Diversity Liaison: In the past, the liaison has worked with ESOL and students new to our country and their families to help navigate school programs and processes and to act as a resource for any questions. It is a great way to reach out to our international families! For more information, please contact nominating@chesterbrookpta.org.

Summer Quest Registration Open
| The 2012 Summer Quest camp registration is still open and many classes are filled. This year camp runs from July 9 for 4 weeks through August 3. Again we have morning and afternoon sessions (children registered for both may bring a lunch) and after camp fun to make a full-day. Cost is $130 per session, plus listed supply fee. The reference chart lists camps by week, with morning (9 am-12pm) or afternoon (1-4 pm), grade levels (rising K through rising 7), camp name, and supply fee. The full program adds a description for each camp. Get ready for some summer fun! |
Rising Kindergarten Playdates
|
We're still collecting contact information for our Rising K Playdate list. Over the summer our coordinators, Carrie Moore and Melissa McManus, will organize several playground playdates so kids (and parents!) can make some new friends before school starts. Please contact kinders@chesterbrookpta.org if you have questions about the playdates or anything about kindergarten. You can also register for the Kinders list, as well as PTA mailings on our website at the Newsletter Sign-Up on the righthand menu.
