FAQs |
Q: What is the April in Paris PTA social all about? Is it a fundraiser?
A: April in Paris is an unprecedented occasion for parents, teachers and administrators at Chesterbrook to connect socially with other adults in our community. It is not a fundraiser. Come for the sole purpose of having a nice time with your spouse and friends. The price of the ticket covers food, drink & amazing live entertainment (but not tips). Hope to see you there!

Chesterbrook PTA Digest PLUS
April 24, 2012
Dear Chesterbrook Families,
The color of the month is GREEN at Chesterbrook! Have you heard the news? Our children are learning to recycle their lunch materials.
Just as every child needs to sort his/her own tray, we need every parent to help support this learning project .It is not hard. Please talk to your kids about what can be recycled. The county's recycling of materials is the same for the school as it is for residents at home. I am very proud to see Chesterbrook take this step. As leaders in many of the county school initiatives, this is a vital way to help the next generation consider their planet and how to protect its resources. All of the research indicates the earlier you start, the more success a community will have in this endeavor. It is responsible living. If you like this initiative, please join our ever growing Green Committee by emailing Green@chesterbrookpta.org. We'll put you on the list for communications about our future plans, ask for your input and contact the group when help is needed. We do have additional ideas we would like to implement for recycling but we need many people to come together in small ways to make it work. Join the team and GO GREEN!
Special 'shout out' of thanks to Rick Barnard & Melissa McManus and their team for getting this started. If you can give an hour to be a sorting monitor during lunch, please help by signing up HERE. The youngest kids need the most help.

Chesterbrook Elementary Goes Green! |
By: Catherine Palumbo
"Earth Day" was celebrated on April 22nd. As a school, we want to inspire our children to be passionate about taking care of their planet for themselves and future generations. With this theme in mind, the PTA and Chesterbrook School have launched a recycling program to help students recycle their lunchtime waste.
There are separate collection bins so that students can recycle products and reduce the amount of waste that is sent to the landfill. This week's results were fabulous, each day producing several large collection bins of material to be recycled instead of just going into the trash. Kids were excited about the program and some were anxious to recycle items we weren't quite ready to take (Capri Sun juice boxes and sandwich bags). Moving forward, we are hoping to secure these items and others as recyclable.
To start things off right, the SCA (with help from Eleanor Gollob and Kurt Kohls) produced a recycling video featuring the Lorax which was shown on the Morning News several days last week and can be seen at home through Parent Resources on Blackboard. Cafeteria monitors and parent volunteers helped students sort materials. While we were educating students at school, we were trying to think of ways of reducing the amount of trash, as there was still quite a large amount that couldn't be recycled. One of the ways you can help at home is by sending sandwiches/snacks and drinks in washable plastic containers, rather than ziploc bags or juice boxes. This would help to greatly reduce the amount of plastic thrown away daily. You can buy reusable sandwich wrappers, a variety of plastic sandwich containers, and small reusable bottles at the Container Store, MOM's Organic Market, and Whole Foods among other places. You can even buy the "Glad" brand containers at the supermarket and they are very reasonably priced.
Thanks to the volunteers who helped students separate out items to be recycled this week. We can use some more help over the next few weeks, so click here if you're interested in helping out during lunchtime on this fun and very worthwhile project.

Discovery Gardens: Turtle Talk
|

Hello, I am one of the three new female Red Earred Sliders living in the Chesterbrook pond. We were adopted last summer after our friend Shelly passed away. We don't have names yet, but the students will be voting on names next week, so wish us luck! I heard a small human saying they'd like to name me Chicken, so I'm a bit worried.
Spring has arrived and my sisters and I are surprised by how busy the outdoor classrooms have been! This year grades 3-6 have adopted the outdoor classrooms and will be helping to care for them. So far, the third and fifth graders have started the spring weeding process, and the fourth and sixth grades will start soon. An adoption sign will be posted by each garden with pictures of the students working. We are very grateful for their help in keeping our homes beautiful!
We've also seen many students learning in the courtyards. Mrs. Moseley has been taking small groups into the gardens to read and work on assignments. The third grade recently began their Ladybug unit and spent an afternoon exploring the habitats at Chesterbrook. They were turning over logs to look for insects, exploring the pond for frogs and tadpoles, and spying on the birds in their new homes. Ms. Hansen took her math group out to work on measurement and money. A little birdie told me that the first grade is also getting ready to plant lettuce in the raised beds. The second grade will be learning about Milkweed and Monarch butterflies as well.
Well, that's all the news we have for now. We look forward to getting to know all of you!
For now... the Slider Sisters

School Board Sets Goal To Start High Schools Later |
On Thursday, April 12th, the Fairfax County School Board voted 10 to 2 to set a goal to achieve high school start times after 8 a.m. and directed the Superintendent to study how other districts have been able to implement this goal. The Superintendent will report back on June 11th. The resolution describes the research regarding teen sleep and circadian rhythms. The goal demonstrates the school board's desire to achieve high school start times after 8 a.m. because of the benefits to student health, well-being, and performance. This was NOT a vote to change any school's start times. There will be NO change for September 2012. By directing the Superintendent to identify successful approaches used in other districts, this board is taking a step in the right direction, but it will take time for the school board to find ways to address community concerns. Visit the SLEEP (Start Later for Excellence in Education Proposal) website for more information on this issue. (Source: Fairfax County Council PTA)

PTA Legislative Action in Richmond
|
Each year the Virginia PTA advocates for its members on behalf of member-approved positions. This year's legislative session included a number of bills you may have read about, including those allowing counties local control on when to start school; 3rd grade SOL subjects; whether homeschooled children should be allowed to play high school sports (the "Tebow" bill), and a myriad of topics important to PTA member schools.
Click here for a summary of the 2012 General Assembly actions that were followed this year.
