FAQs
Question: I heard some parents at the bus stop talking about Summer Quest -- what is that?

Answer: Good timing! Summer Quest is Chesterbrook's summer day camp program. We offer half-day camps covering a huge variety of academic and non-academic subjects, with morning and afternoon sessions and after care...all taught by FCPS teachers (and mostly our own CES staff). Sessions run weekly from July 9 through August 3. More information will be coming out later in the month but you can review LAST summer's information here.

Check out our new FAQs section on the website for more as the year goes on. Send any questions to  Ask Chester and we'll answer them here and/or on the website.

SafeStreets Make McLean Streets Safe
patrol Supervisor Foust, Doug O'Neil of the FCPS safety office, Chris Wells of the County pedestrian safety office, a representative from the McLean Police Station, and possibly others will be available to address child/pedestrian safety on Kirby Road, particularly during drop-off and pick-up times at Chesterbrook. This is getting bigger and bigger, and we'd really like a good turnout to show how concerned we are. Members of the "Make McLean Streets Safe" campaign began working with the school and the PTA after International Walk to School Day and asked for a meeting to learn what our government officials are doing to address the issue.  Too often, children and parents are forced to scramble across the street to get to school because cars fail to slow down or ignore pedestrian rights of way while in the crosswalks. More concerning, however, are the number of children/parents who report being "side-swiped" by cars as they attempt to cross Kirby.

A second issue Supervisor Foust will address is how the county can support an application for federal funds to improve walking safety issues around the school through the Virginia Safe Routes to School Program.  This program provides funds for projects such as sidewalks to facilitate children walking to school.

Please come on Thursday, January 12 at 7 pm in the cafeteria and let your voice be heard on these important issues.
Because these issues pertains to our entire community, feel free to invite neighbors whose children do not attend Chesterbrook. For questions or more information, please contact saferoutes@chesterbrookpta.org.
Before- and After-School Activity Registration
YogaRegistration for January sessions of before and after school activities will be held January 10th at 7 pm on the PTA website. Details on the new sessions of Fitness Warriors, Drama, Yoga, Science Enrichment, Girls on the Run, and the Newspaper Club are on the website now and have been coming home in Thursday folders as well.  We heard your feedback from the fall registration and are making a few changes, including a later registration start time, and you will be able to fill out the emergency contact form after you have completed registration and payment.  All payments must be made during registration via PayPal.  If you completed an emergency contact form for a fall session for the same child, you will be able to re-use that form as long as you do not need to update any of the information.  All of the other after school activities are full year programs and will not have a new registration in January.  Fitness Warriors and Science Enrichment will also have spring sessions with a separate registration in March or April.  Please email the After School Activities Chair if you have any questions.
 InternationalInternational Night
International Night is coming back Friday, February 3, 6 - 7:30 pm! International Night is a delicious and fun event to celebrate the wide variety of cultures represented at Chesterbrook. Last year we had every inhabited continent except Australia represented, so let's see if we can get them ALL this year!

You can sign-up on our International Night Sign-up Genius to represent a country.  It might be where you are from, where your ancestors lived, or even just a place you adore. Then you can pick some munchies representing your country (homemade or store-bought) and select items to put on a display board that we'll provide with the country name and a map. The rest is blank for you to fill in as you like.  Photos, local currency, clothing, songs, facts and figures...there is no wrong or right for what goes on the backboard.  The only requirement is that it be something about your country! If you participated last year, we saved the boards, so feel free to re-use them!

Each country will be assigned its own table and provided paper plates and napkins.  Feel free to bring tablecloths, addtional set up and display items, forks/spoons, etc.  It can be as elaborate or simple as you like.  Paper cups and water will also be available for all participants.

We will need an event crew of 6 people (teens welcome, but we'd like at least 1 adult to supervise) to help with set-up, general tasks during the event and clean-up/break down after the event.

Questions? Contact Nancy Stuckwisch, International Night Committee Chair.

Our Friends of Chesterbrook fundraising program continues to grow... Thank you to CampEasy for joining our Business Friends this year!

 REACH
REACH (Resource Enrichment at Chesterbrook) has been extended from 20 minute to 30 minute blocks this school year. REACH (available for grades 1-6) has added some new opportunities like working in the gardens to enrich our students' environmental awareness. Due to extended time and more activities, REACH is looking for parent volunteers. If interested, please contact Bethany Brooks, the in-school coordinator, or your Homeroom teacher.
Family Directory
2011-2012 directory coverDon't forget that the school has made a PDF of the recently completed Family Directory available online through Blackboard. Here's how to access it:
  • Login using your Parent View account or your child's account.
  • Click on (one of) the student name(s). If you are using your student's account, you will skip this.
  • Click on "Chesterbrook Specialists," not the student's grade level.
  • You'll find the Family Directory under "Parent Resources" at the bottom of the lefthand menu. We plan to update this periodically, so if you find something in error (sorry!), contact the Directory Committee
