FAQs
Question: I'm trying to get organized in 2012. How do I connect my home Google calendar to the school and PTA calendars?

Answer: Great idea! Go to the PTA's website, scroll down to the bottom where the calendar is, and click on the +Google Calendar button at the bottom. Select "Add" next to Chesterbrook PTA. This should add the school calendar, but if not, do the same thing on the CES homepage. Each should show up on your own Google calendar with different colors for each source. Don't have a Google calendar? Go to Google's main page, find "More" in the menu across the stop, and scroll down to "Calendar."

Check out our new FAQs section on the website for more as the year goes on. Send any questions to  Ask Chester and we'll answer them here and/or on the website.
Chesterbrook PTA Weekly Digest

No. 15, January 3, 2012

We hope everyone had a relaxing holiday break, but now we're back to business! Please note that our meeting Supervisor Foust to discuss traffic on Kirby Road will be Thursday evening, January 12, at 7 pm. Thank you Michele Pearce for reaching out and leading the charge!  Please plan to attend as our children and our safety is of utmost importance. See below for more information. We've heard lately of more and more near-misses on our streets!

Here's what's ahead:

  • Before- and After-School Registration begins, 1/10, 7 pm, online
  • PTA Meeting with Supervisor Foust, NOTE TIME AND DATE CHANGE, 1/12, 7 pm, cafeteria, see below.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Holiday, no school, 1/16
  • Winter Band Concert, 1/20, 2:15 pm and 1/24, 7 pm
  • Teacher Workdays, student holidays, 1/30-1/31
  • International Night, 2/3

Before- and After-School Activity Registration
Registration for January sessions of before and after school activities will be held January 10th at 7 pm on the PTA website. Details on the new sessions of Fitness Warriors, Drama, Yoga, Science Enrichment, Girls on the Run, and the Newspaper Club are on the website now and will be coming home in Thursday folders as well.  We heard your feedback from the fall registration and are making a few changes, including a later start time, and you will be able to fill out the emergency contact form after you have completed registration and payment.  All payments must be made during registration via PayPal.  If you completed an emergency contact form for a fall session, you will be able to re-use that form as long as you do not need to update any of the information.  All of the other after school activities are full year programs and will not have a new registration in January.  Fitness Warriors and Science Enrichment will also have spring sessions with a separate registration in March or April.  Please email the After School Activities Chair if you have any questions.
SafeStreets Make McLean Streets Safe
Supervisor Foust and a representative from the McLean Police Station will be available to address child/pedestrian safety on Kirby Road, particularly during drop-off and pick-up times at Chesterbrook.  Members of the "Make McLean Streets Safe" campaign began working with the school and the PTA after International Walk to School Day and asked for a meeting to learn what our government officials are doing to address the issue.  Too often, children and parents are forced to scramble across the street to get to school because cars fail to slow down or ignore pedestrian rights of way while in the crosswalks. More concerning, however, are the number of children/parents who report being "side-swiped" by cars as they attempt to cross Kirby.

A second issue Supervisor Foust will address is how the county can support an application for federal funds to improve walking safety issues around the school through the Virginia Safe Routes to School Program.  This program provides funds for projects such as sidewalks to facilitate children walking to school.

Please come on Thursday, January 12 at 7 pm in the cafeteria and let your voice be heard on these important issues.

FriendsChesterbrook Friends
Our Friends of Chesterbrook fundraising program continues to grow! We have new Friends from just prior to and during the break to thank this week:
  • The McManus Family (Platinum level)
  • The Dennis Family (Silver level)
  • The Kunz Family (Bronze level)
  • The Przypyszny Family (Bronze level)
  • The Goldberg Family (Copper level)
  • Liz and Tim Hughes  (Copper level)
And thank you to The Hedges Company for being a Business Friend again this year!

You or your business can still participate! Read our flyer here or visit our website. We had 30 families and businesses join last year, and we hope many more of you will join this year. Spread the word! If you have questions or would like to get involved, contact Bob Nelson.
It's Cold!
"Mom, it's cold outside and we probably won't have recess today, so I don't need my hat!" More than likely he just can't find his hat, and more than likely he will have recess. Recess is cancelled only when temperatures are 32 degrees or below or the windchill is 25 degrees or below. Please send your children appropriately dressed and label all outerwear! And if he's lost his hat (or anything else), please go check the Lost and Found in the cafeteria. There are 3 big bags of items, plus the regular cabinet, waiting to be donated. Once they're gone, they're gone.

Also, don't forget our Inclement Weather closing schedule (for Mondays as well):
  • 2-hour late opening: 10:40 am - 3:20 pm
  • 2-hour early closing: 8:40 am -1:20 pm
 REACH
REACH (Resource Enrichment at Chesterbrook) has been extended from 20 minute to 30 minute blocks this school year. REACH (available for grades 1-6) has added some new opportunities like working in the gardens to enrich our students' environmental awareness. Due to extended time and more activities, REACH is looking for parent volunteers. If interested, please contact Bethany Brooks, the in-school coordinator, or your Homeroom teacher.
Family Directory
2011-2012 directory coverDon't forget that the school has made a PDF of the recently completed Family Directory available online through Blackboard. Here's how to access it:
  • Login using your Parent View account or your child's account.
  • Click on (one of) the student name(s). If you are using your student's account, you will skip this.
  • Click on "Chesterbrook Specialists," not the student's grade level.
  • You'll find the Family Directory under "Parent Resources" at the bottom of the lefthand menu. We plan to update this periodically, so if you find something in error (sorry!), contact the Directory Committee
