FAQs
Q: What can I expect at my Parent-Teacher conference?

A: Conferences are an excellent opportunity to get to know your child's teachers and find out how he/she is adjusting to the school year. But at only 15 minutes, they go by fast! Plan to arrive a few minutes early and be prepared with any questions or concerns you'd like to discuss. You may schedule separate meetings with a particular teacher to cover a particular topic in more depth if necessary.  Did you know sixth graders actually participate in their conferences?

Check out our
new FAQs section on the website for more as the year goes on. Send any questions to  Ask Chester and we'll answer them here and/or on the website.
Chesterbrook PTA Digest PLUS

October 25, 2011

As you read this newsletter, you will see how many wonderful things are occurring at Chesterbrook. The PTA is fortunate to have so many interested and engaged parents to support our amazing kids. Thank you to all the parents in our community who are helping to support the PTA. Your efforts, large and small, make for a dynamic and strong organization. Your friendly willingness to help makes it a pleasure to be a part of the action.

I also want to share a special note of thanks for some of the leaders of our biggest fall projects:

Lisa Richter and Eleanor Gollob for leading our school supply kits, Julie Hay for launching and coordinating all of the after school activities. and Maryam Redjaee for launching our membership drive and grocery card programs. Your efforts and those of the parents who helped you are greatly appreciated.

The Book Fair is one week away and it is one of our most beloved events and fundraisers. The kids and parents enjoy it equally. Please be sure to stop by and check out the latest books. More information is below.

Our next general membership meeting is a Speaker Engagement for the benefit of our entire parent body. This is the one PTA meeting you don't want to miss. Please come to the cafeteria on Thursday, November 17th at 7pm to hear Ann Dolin speak about homework. Ann is a former Fairfax county teacher, a tutor, an author, a parent and so much more! Her presentation: Homework Made Simple: Tips, Tools, and Solutions for Stress-Free Homework will be from 7 to 8:30 pm and will be followed by a very brief PTA meeting. More information about Ann Dolin can be found at http://anndolin.com Please join us and bring a Chesterbrook friend along!

Join Us for Thanksgiving Lunch Nov. 11

 By: Kim Johnson, Hospitality Chair

Mark your calendars now and plan to join your Chesterbrook child on Friday, Nov. 11th, Veteran's Day,  for our annual Thanksgiving Lunch. Parents, siblings and other family members are welcome to join their student for a Thanksgiving lunch with all the trimmings! Our students are so excited to have their family members attend this special event. You will soon receive a letter and ticket order form in the mail (from Chesterbrook School) which will note your child's scheduled time for lunch. We appreciate it when you buy the tickets in advance, as it allows cafeteria staff to better plan for the event, but tickets will be available at the door, as well.

Many hands are necessary to make this lunch an enjoyable event for everyone and it's a great opportunity to put meaning into the "giving" part of the holiday. If you can volunteer some time to help set up on Wednesday afternoon  and/or before or after your student's lunch, please take a look at  and sign up to help on our SignUpGenius: www.SignUpGenius.com/go/thanksgiving1193

Signing up to volunteer is very easy and much appreciated!  We need helpers to set up decorations on Wednesday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., many helpers for serving the lunch on Thursday, in 45-minute  slots beginning at 10:15 a.m., and a few for clean up right after the lunch for about an hour ending around 3:00 p.m.

Helping serve Thanksgiving Lunch is a very fun way to get to know a lot of the other parents and kids at our great school. I hope to see many of you dishing up turkey, gravy, "pumpkin dessert", and all the other holiday goodies!  Please sign up to volunteer now!

If you have any questions, please contact me at KimJohnson5@gmail.com or (703) 220-7456.

Fall Book Fair Opens Monday!

By: Marsha Camp and Beth Stewart, Book Fair Co-Chairs

It's right around the corner -- one of Chesterbrook's most anticipated fundraisers, social events and shopping opportunities rolled into one-- the fall Book Fair!

bookfair 1 2010

This exciting weeklong event opens with two preview days, Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, followed by selling days through Nov. 7. Two very popular evening events -- Book Character Night (Nov. 1 from 6-8 p.m.) and Pajama Night (Nov. 2 from 6-8 p.m.) -- round out the fun.

After previewing the selections, students make "wish lists." Teachers also have wish lists prepared if parents would like to donate a selection from their child to his/her classroom library. In addition to books, there are educational books and games, puzzles and toys, and even popular adult selections. If you haven't been, you will be amazed at the wide assortment. It's like having our own Barnes & Noble (sans Starbucks) at the school.

Proceeds from the Book Fair are used to supplement the library budget from Fairfax County, which has been cut each of the past several years. Money will be used to purchase books, audio materials, and hopefully several laptops to supplement the computers already in the library, so that an entire class can use the computers in the library simultaneously.

Hope to see you there!

Plea for Evening Book Fair Volunteers!
By: Marsha Camp and Beth Stewart, Book Fair Co-Chairs

Thanks to all who have signed up to help out at the Fall Book Fair. We're still short several helpers for the two evening events - Tues, Nov. 1 and Wed, Nov. 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. You can be a huge help to us with only two hours of your time. We especially need adult volunteers to help ring up purchases since we are going to have two additional checkout stations this year. A few middle school volunteers would also be much appreciated. Thanks so much for your support!

Off and Running - PTA Hopes To Fund Track Renovation

track 1

By: Michelle Joss, Track Committee Chair

We all know that there is a childhood obesity epidemic. Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the last 30 years. Culprits include video games, television and fewer children biking or walking to school today than 25 years ago. The CDC has stated that schools play a critical role in reversing this epidemic by establishing a safe and supportive environment with policies and practices that support healthy behaviors.

Regular exercise not only benefits a child physically, but has many emotional benefits as well. Exercise helps children reduce anger. Regular exercise provides children with increased confidence and self-esteem, more energy, and better memory. It also helps them sleep better at night and have stronger immune systems.

Chesterbrook is fortunate to have a vigorous PE program and teachers that provide opportunities throughout the day for exercise for all children. Did you know that, in addition to regular PE class, our children have a "Morning Mad Minute" of exercise each day which is broadcast by the Morning News? Did you know that 5th and 6th grade students run a lap around the track behind the school to start recess each day? Did you know that the 4th through 6th grades run a timed mile on the track? Community members and after school programs, like Girls on the Run (GOTR), also use the track.

In order to continue these wonderful initiatives and further build on them, we need to renovate our existing track which is showing signs of age and erosion. In undertaking the renovation of Chesterbrook's track, we have a unique opportunity to help our children become physically active for a lifetime.

A committee is being called together and will begin researching costs, surfaces, timing and financing issues. Please think of ways you may be able to contribute such as: join the committee by emailing track@chesterbrookpta.org, talk to a community or corporate sponsor who can help with some aspect of the project, become a Friend of Chesterbrook, and/or support PTA fundraisers this year.

Fitness is not only fun, it also contributes to academic and social success so let's get moving on a new track for Chesterbrook!

Join the Hospitality Committee

By: Kim Johnson, Hospitality Chair

Do you like to bake and/or cook? How about decorating for parties? The Hospitality Committee does these things and has the added bonus of treating our Chesterbrook Staff with goodies and honoring them. An example of this was the dinner that the Hospitality Committee supplied for the staff on Back-to-School Night with contributions of salads and cookies from several parents. The dinner was catered by Panera Bread. The staff all seemed to love it. There was plenty of good food and treats and it made the long day a bit nicer for them. It is rewarding serving the people who give so much to our children!

There are several other opportunities to be hospitable this year with the Hospitality Committee:

  • Nov 11th      Thanksgiving Lunch - decorating the cafeteria
  • Dec 13th      Holiday Treats for the staff
  • May 7th       Staff Appreciation Lunch
  • May 9th       PTA Executive Board Breakfast

So if baking or cooking is something you enjoy, and you would like to be on a fun committee, please send me an email at kimjohnson5@gmail.com. I would also love to work with a committee co-chair who would be willing to be at all events to lend a hand. Please contact me if you want more information and to join in on the fun!

Leftover Halloween Candy Collection
By: Trisha Downey & Kim Johnson, Fun Fair Co-Chairs

Got sweet treats you're not going to eat? Consider donating them to the Chesterbrook Fun Fair! Every year we take the extra calories off your hands and put them to good use filling our popular "Guesstimates" jars. We'll have a designated drop off box in the front office from November 1st through the Thanksgiving Lunch on November 11. Thank you for your help!

Chinese Classes at Chesterbrook

Mandarin Chinese is the number one spoken language in the world. Through a special Congressional grant, Chesterbrook's 1st through 5th grade students are enrolled in Mandarin Chinese FLES classes. Read on to learn more about this exciting program.

What is Chesterbrook's Chinese FLES Program?

Foreign Language in the Elementary School, or FLES, is an approach to language learning that allows students to develop basic communicative skills in a language while reinforcing and enriching content in other disciplines. At Chesterbrook, our students are taught by Ms. Peggy Leung and part-time teacher, Beesha Hung. Fairfax County Public Schools offer the FLES program because research studies have indicated that the early study of a second language results in cognitive benefits, gains in academic achievement, and increases in self-esteem, creativity, and positive attitudes toward diversity.

What does the FCPS FLES model look like?

Ms. Leung and Ms. Hung meet with students twice a week for thirty minutes in their language arts class. The teaching is all done in Chinese. Students start to appreciate learning Chinese and try to understand the instructions. The teachers will work to incorporate math skills/concepts as well as language arts and social studies vocabulary into the lessons.

Ms. Leung and Ms. Hung shared with us their thoughts on what children can do to benefit from the Chinese program.

In class:

  • Watch carefully what the teacher is doing and showing.
  • Participate.
  • Listen to students who are helping to tell the class what has been said.
  • In oral practice, observe the teacher's mouth movement, sound it out, listen to your own pronunciation and keep practicing until you get it right
  • In writing practice, observe the writing stroke order, pay attention to each stroke's position, length, and shape.  Compare your handwriting with the character, make corrections and then practice a few more times.

Outside of the class:

  • Keep a folder of the materials that are sent home. Make copies of last year's folder if you can. The teachers will review what students have already learned and then build on that. Students can always refer to what we have learned by looking back at the pages for reminders.
  • Check Blackboard for new postings and monthly news on what we've learned in Chinese class.
  • Find a language partner to practice with you. He or she can be your classmate, sibling, or even parent. Bring home the completed Chinese worksheet and teach someone.

Parents can help by:

  • Encouraging your children. Believe your kids can learn Chinese.
  • Remind your children to keep trying. Never give up!
  • Showing interest in the learning. Have fun with Chinese!
  • Find Chinese books/videos in the libraries or purchase supplementary materials
  • Go to Chinese restaurants, Chinese/Asian shops and museums that feature Chinese artifacts. Ask your children to speak Chinese at home. Communicate with Chinese people you meet. Even plan a trip to China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore or places where Chinese is commonly spoken.

What materials are available to parents to help their child with Chinese studies?

Ms. Leung uses www.betterchinese.com  for her lessons and materials for the second, third and fourth grade students. Parents can sign up for a free trial account to access online lessons and to view and purchase publications. Additional resources include:

MDBG Chinese-English Dictionary:
http://www.mdbg.net/chindict/chindict.php

Confucius Institute Online (for Children): http://kid.chinese.cn/reading/index.html

Chinese Numbers Game: http://www.digitaldialects.com/Chinese/numbers_3.htm

The Chesterbrook Book Fair will also be selling some Chinese learning materials. If you have questions about the Chinese FLES program or www.betterchinese.com  site, please email Ms. Leung at pik.leung@fcps.edu

Our new Chinese Teachers also shared some the following interesting background facts with us:

How did you get interested in becoming a teacher?

Ms. Leung: "I love children and longed to be a teacher when I was young. I'm glad that now I can use my language and culture to teach!

Ms. Hung: "In order to encourage my sons to learn Chinese, I enrolled them to a local Chinese school when we first moved here. I began teaching in the Chinese school four years ago and since then my interest in teaching and the desire of doing a better job have continually grown.
I enjoy teaching and I enjoy teaching Chinese. It has helped me to appreciate my heritage and to promote friendship between Chinese people and American people."

Are you new to Northern Virginia? If so, where did you live before you moved here?

Ms. Leung: "I lived in Minnesota for eight years before moving here. I'm excited to live in Northern Virginia."

Ms. Hung: "I have been living in Virginia since 2006. Prior to moving here, I lived in New York City and Japan with my family."

What are your favorite foods?

Ms. Hung: "I love hot soups. A hot bowl of white turnip, shiitake (winter) mushroom with meat soup makes me warm in the cold weather!"

Ms. Leung: "All kinds of noodles!"

Thanks, Cafeteria Staff!

Family Volunteer Event: Stop Hunger Now Nov. 5

stop hunger now

One day:  November 5, 2011. One goal: Package 200,000 meals. Over 25,000 people a day die from hunger and hunger related illnesses. We can prevent this by redirecting just a portion of the money we spend on snacks, sodas and other "frills" in our diets.

Stop Hunger Now is an immensely fun, hands-on and rewarding volunteer experience for anyone of any age. A group of 40-50 volunteers can package 10,000 meals in just two hours! Join host McLean Rotary for a community wide event on November 5 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in McLean (corner of Westmoreland and Chain Bridge Road). Volunteers of all ages are needed on November 5 to help package over 150,000 meals in a single day. Students, Scouts and Seniors can all lend a hand. Register to volunteer at www.stophungernow-mclean.org/.

The meals packaged at the Stop Hunger Now June event were sent to a school-feeding program in Kenya! That means more children, especially girls, will be sent to school every day to learn and be fed. And, as we know, education can change lives and cultures!  Stop Hunger Now operates in 76 countries where people are hungry and there is a non-profit infrastructure to ensure that the meals get to those who really need them.

Take time with your family to  learn more about this organization's work at  www.stophungernow-mclean.org/. Then talk together about how you can become involved. Each meal costs us $.25 to package. For the $3 cost of a Starbucks coffee, you can feed a school child 12 meals. Sign up to volunteer or donate today. You will make a difference!

Questions? Contact Lucinda Romberg at Lucinda.romberg@verizon.net. Sign up at www.stophungernow-mclean.org/ to help package meals on November 5 in McLean. Groups are welcome, but please note that this is a not a drop off event. Adult supervision is needed.
