FAQs
Q: How do I get a family directory? and when?

A: First, we need to collect updates to entries for all returning families and all information for new families. You'll receive an update form in your Thursday envelope on 9/22. Then we'll update our database and format the data (back to the smaller version!) and send to the printer. We hope to distribute directories to PTA members by the end of October. The sooner you return your updates--everyone has new teachers--the sooner we can get going.

Check out our new FAQs section on the website for more as the year goes on. Send any questions to  Ask Chester and we'll answer them here and/or on the website.

Before- and After-School Activities Sign-ups
Activities sign-ups began last Thursday and we've already filled up Science Enrichment (in a record 15 minutes), Chess, GEMS, Fitness Warriors 5-6, Newspaper Club, Yoga K-2, and Drama K-2. We are looking into adding another session of science and will let those at the top of the waitlist know shortly. Space is still available in Drama 3-6, Fitness Warriors 1-2 and 3-4, Be-STEMS, Math Olympiad, and FLEX. Registration for GOTR is closed. For more information on each program, please visit our website. There are links to the flyers there too.

A note about registering: registration is not complete on the website until you receive a confirmation order; your spot cannot be held until registration and payment is complete. You may need to click on a final "place order" button. Contact webmaster@chesterbrookpta.org if you have questions. We no longer accept checks and all registrations will go through our website and PayPal (which processes credit cards and electronic checks).
Wounded Warriors 5K with Vinson Hall
Come get healthy this fall and support wounded warriors! Chesterbrook is teaming up with Vinson Hall for their 5k race to support wounded warriors on the morning of September 24. Children can participate in a free 50m race, explore tanks and humvees, meet and greet soldiers, and build on our relationship with the active and retired military members of our community. Parents and families can run the race or sponsor a warrior. Click here for more information and to register, or here to see the route.

Guests and Awards Presenters: Lt. Gen. General Willie J. Williams USMC; Amy Cohen, Director Community Engagement-The George Washington University; Senator Janet Howell; Supervisor John Foust; Delegate Barbara Comstock; Delegate Bob Brink; Heather Swann, Miss District of Columbia USA; Shaina Millan, America's Miss 2011; and Katie Barrie, Mrs. Virginia USA. The Old Guard is the only remaining military fife and drum corps and the oldest active infantry regiment with direct lineage to George Washington's original Continental Army during the Revolutionary War; performance at 9:50 am. In addition, Andy Krafsur, CEO of Spira Footwear, will provide a pair of running shoes to the top male and top female winners. He will also provide a 30% discount code for all the participants in the race from his online store.

We are looking forward to a good turnout from Chesterbrook families! Join us and bring the entire family for a fun morning and great cause! In addition to the 5k run/walk, there will be free Warrior-led events: children's Fun Run, pro golf lessons, fitness evaluations, refreshments, etc. All ages welcome - come on out! And yes, Chester will be running the races with the kids!
Family Directory

Returning Chesterbrook families will receive a copy of your 2010-2011 Family Directory entry in your Thursday envelope. Please update the blue form with any changes and return to school as soon as possible. If you have no changes, indicate that as well, and return the form. New families will receive blank pink forms to complete and return as well.

If you completed the online form, please still complete the paper form. We intended that the online form be used only by families new to Chesterbrook, but with half of the entries from returning families, we will have more work separating the data set and figuring out who's who. We apologize for the double work on your part!

Forms must be returned by Friday, September 30 in order to ensure your entry is in the directory. We cannot produce the Directory until we have all these forms back, and if we must follow-up with families, it will take longer. It is a labor-intensive process so bear with us in working with our new system.

PTA Memberships
PTA memberships may still be purchased ($20 per family, $10 per individual member) online on the PTA website. PTA members receive a free copy of the Family Directory ($8 value). We're up to about 80% of families joining -- don't be left out!

A note about ordering: orders are not complete on the website until you receive a confirmation email. There are still a few of shopping carts with incomplete orders and we cannot be sure whether owners meant to complete them or not. You may need to click on a final "place order" button. Contact webmaster@chesterbrookpta.org if you have questions.
Student Support Activities
We've recently updated the Student Support section on our webpage with a number of upcoming opportunities for parents sponsored by the FCPS Parent Resource Center. Check them out here! Note that we are also sponsoring our own Ann Dolin: Homework Made Simple presentation on Thursday, November 17 at 7 pm.
Volunteer with PTA
Are you interested in getting more involved in school and PTA activities? The PTA needs your help in the coming year! Running a committee is a terrific way to learn more about what's going on at school and meet other parents. We have some critical jobs to fill. Please see our website for a list of the openings. For more information, please contact Beth Mahood so you can get connected to the right opportunity. In your Back to School Folder (distributed at Open House or on the first day of school) you'll find a Volunteer Opportunities form where you can indicate where else you'd like to help, even if you aren't chairing a committee. There's something for everyone and every schedule!

Grocery Cards, Etc.
Giant A Bonus Bucks It's time to redesignate your grocery cards. This is great, FREE, money for Chesterbrook! Last year our proceeds were well below the previous year, so we're hoping to increase substantially this year. Giant, Safeway, and Harris Teeter cards work, as does Target's Visa card. You can redesignate your cards in several ways:
  • When you join the PTA online, the form asks for your card numbers for each store.
  • You may email your numbers with store names to Maryam Redjaee, our VP of Fundraising.
  • You may register your numbers yourself through our website.
While you are thinking about free money, we also are an Amazon affiliate, which means that a portion of each purchase comes back to the school when you begin your shopping at http://chesterbrookpta.org/amazonchesterbrook.aspx, which is also on our website. Bookmark it!
MyLunchMoney.com
lunch sticker Have you ever seen this sticker? When your child comes home with one, it means his or her lunch account is running low. You can avoid this by signing up with mylunchmoney.com and setting an automatic reload point. For a small fee, they will reload the lunch account in any amount. Through the website, you can also review what your child has purchased in the past week. You can sign up even if you have already paid in the cafeteria--it will just get added to your child's account.
