PRESIDENT'S REMARKS

For our final PTA Chronicle of the year, I want to say thank you again to all the PTA members who've worked so hard this year. We have about 15 parents who've worked year-long on multiple projects putting in many, many hours over the year, another 40 or so who lead committees and worked on and off all year, another large group who have worked in various capacities from Fun Fair subcommittees, library shelvers, and others who volunteer on a regular basis, and hundreds of members who volunteered for Fun Fair, Book Fair, and other individual events. Our PTA cannot run without all of you and I appreciate all your efforts throughout the year. We are grateful for all help and input!

As you may know, I am signing off as President at the end of the month. It's been a terrific year and I'm very proud of everything we've been able to accomplish. Our slate of new officers, to be voted on at the short PTA meeting just before the Band Concert next Tuesday, June 14 at 7 pm, includes:

    Beth Mahood, President,

Julia Nelson, VP for Fundraising, and

    Maryam Redjaee, VP for Membership

You can read about them here.  The PTA is in great hands.  Many thanks also to those who have been by my side all year with advice, encouragement, and laughter--I couldn't have done it without you.

Laurie Plishker, PTA President

UPCOMING VOTE ON PTA FUNDING - GYM FLOOR AND OUTDOOR VOLLEYBALL COURT

McLean Youth Basketball has agreed to share in the costs of replacing our gym floor.  Next Tuesday, June 14th at our final PTA General Membership Meeting of the year, we will vote on a budget amendment to fund our portion. This is a fantastic opportunity to improve the quality and safety of the floor for our children!  We hope to get the renovation completed by early fall. We will also be voting on a budget amendment to allocate funds to install an outdoor volleyball court adjacent to the soccer fields, and will be electing our new slate of officers. Please review the attached Budget Amendment Proposal and let Laurie Plishker know if you have any questions or concerns.

SCHOOL SUPPLY KITS AVAILABLE IN AUGUST

School Supply Lists will be posted on the website in August--but there's no need to think about that now.

Just remember that the Chesterbrook PTA offers complete school supply kits for each grade, including Kindergarten. Buy your School Supply Kits online in August and avoid trips to multiple stores to gather all the needed supplies. This is a major fundraiser  for our school!

Everybody wins when you buy PTA School Supply Kits!

  • Teachers win when kids buy PTA School Supply kits because it gives them exactly what they need in the classroom.
  • Chesterbrook wins because the PTA can raise money to purchase new equipment for our school and students.
  • You win more time at the beach and less time at Target (with the rest of crowds)!

Support your school and support your teachers. The supply lists are created by the teachers and include specific items that are used in the classroom all year long.  PTA does all the shopping for you and distributes School Supply Kits to your child's classroom.

Watch for emails in August announcing when Supply Kits are available.  Kits can be purchased by credit card or PayPal account. You can pay for multiple students at the same time and in a matter of minutes you can do all your back to school supply shopping-from the comfort of your beach chair!

Questions? Contact Lisa Richter or Eleanor Gollob at schoolkits@chesterbrookpta.org

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Donate Used School Supplies

Again this year we are collecting gently and slightly used school supplies to send to needy children in Nicaragua. Items can be placed in the box marked "Nicaragua" outside the Media Center through the first 2 weeks of summer. Please tear out used pages of notebooks. Contact Ann-Marie Turnage for more information.

A Thank You From Timber Lane ES for Supplies Already Donated

Dear Chesterbrook PTA Families,

Thank you for the additional school supplies.  The folders, wipes and pencils will be very useful at the beginning of our school year.  We really appreciate your thinking of us.  It is hard to believe the school year is almost over, but we look forward to seeing all the smiling faces return in September.  There will be extra smiles on their faces due to your thoughtfulness.

RISING 7TH GRADERS - TWO UPCOMING EVENTS

LongFEST JUNE 12th

Rising 7th grade students and families are invited to Longfellow MS this Sunday, June 12 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm for LongFEST!

GYM ONE: Music & Comedy 'FEST. Featuring comedy, music, talent and much more in Gym One. Longfellow's own alumnus and mixmaster, Robb Spewak (of "The Mike O'Meara Show" and the late, great "Don & Mike" show) will host the 'FEST, taking a lighthearted look back at LMS life through the years and showcasing our students' many special talents. Match your wits against Quiz Bowl students or faculty in a (completely unrigged) challenge. See the Time Capsule opened, and a new one dedicated. Watch Rubik's cubes spin faster than ever before. Listen to some of the greatest hits of yesterday and today, as the Drama Club visits great moments and historic struggles in the life of a middle school student.

LECTURE HALL. No lectures here! It's transformed into a Concert Hall from 2-2:45, as student chamber ensembles present a variety of musical performances for you to enjoy. There will be something for everyone as student ensembles from the Symphonic Band, Orchestra, and Chorus take you on a musical journey. Highlights will include some the best melodies of yesterday and tunes from the modern composers our students most enjoy. Don't miss it!

ALUMNI LOUNGE: The New Library is "Alumni Central," offering hospitality, tables where alumni can gather and socialize, refreshments, old yearbooks, a slideshow, and more. Stop by to visit and catch a student-led tour of the school at 2:30 or 3 pm. LMS is more than half way through its full renovation, so this may be your last chance to see favorite old haunts.

GARDEN DEDICATION: The ribbon cutting for the new Rain Garden & Outdoor Learning Classroom will be at 3:30 pm. See this unique native rainwater-fed garden-the only one of its kind in Fairfax County Public Schools-and watch the 5300 gallon cistern at work. Learn about passive rain water gardening and its benefits for the Chesapeake Bay. Enjoy the public premiere of "The Happy Garden," composed by Mr. Jamie Lynch and performed by the LMS Chorus. Take a stroll through the garden to view the native trees, shrubs and flowers given in honor of faculty, students and friends of Longfellow.

August Start to Success Program - Registration by June 13th

The Start to Success Program is a 2-day workshop at Longfellow to get to know the school, meet other students, and gain some skills to help in their classes. Students will learn from Longfellow teachers as well as current Longfellow students. Dates: August 22/23 for Session 1 or August 24/25 for Session 2. The application is available online, at http://www.fcps.edu/LongfellowMS/pages/STSAPP_2011.pdf. The deadline to register is June 13th and a registration fee of $35 is required.

MalSTOP HUNGER NOW EVENT ON JUNE 11

June 11th Stop Hunger Now 10,000 Meals Event

Stop Hunger Now is an immensely fun, hands-on and rewarding experience for anyone of any age. A group of 40- 50 volunteers can package 10,000 meals in just two hours.  Join us for a community wide event on June 11 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in McLean (corner of Westmoreland and Chain Bridge Road).  Volunteers of all ages are needed on June 11 to help package over 150,000 meals in a single day.  Students, Scouts and Seniors can all lend a hand. Malnutrition contributes to more than one-half of the 9.7 million deaths of children under five each year in developing countries. This means that one child dies every six seconds from malnutrition and related causes.  (Source: World Food Programme, 2009)

The Stop Hunger Now assembly process combines rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a flavoring mix including 21 essential vitamins and minerals into small meal packages. These meal packages are shipped around the world to support school feeding programs and crisis relief. The food stores easily, transports quickly and has a shelf-life of five years. These are the kinds of meals that were distributed in Haiti one year ago and in Japan as we speak.

Questions or to sign up to help package meals on June 11th, please contact Lucinda Romberg at Lucinda.romberg@verizon.netVisit www.stophungernow.org to learn more about the program.  Groups are welcome, but please note that this is a not a drop off event, adult  supervision is needed.
