The Friday Digest Pertinent Points for the Week Ahead from the Chesterbrook PTA |
|
The Friday Digest is coming out Thursday night because it includes a couple time-sensitive issues:- Tomorrow night is Movie Night, rain or (moon)shine. If it's raining, we'll move indoors. You can still RSVP. See below.
- Tomorrow is the deadline to pre-order books to be picked up at the Spring Book Fair. An order form is attached below. Please note that not all books on the form will be available at the sale (May 31-June2) itself.
Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Come to Outdoor Movie Night
It's not too late! You can still come to movie night Friday night. Beginning promptly at 8:30 pm we're showing of "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" (G-rated) on Chesterbrook's blacktop and hill by the playground. In the case of rain, we will move indoors, so do still come!
- Cost: FREE, includes popcorn
- RSVP here. You do not need to bring the ticket associated with the RSVP site; it was mostly for estimating popcorn production.
- Please bring a towel or blanket to sit on and a beverage and snack. The movie will start promptly at 8:30 so please arrive early to get your popcorn and get settled.
- Please remember this event is a Thank You to our Chesterbrook families for supporting us all year long, so we ask that you bring only immediate family members.
- This is not a drop-off event, and all children must be supervised by a responsible adult.
- We need volunteers to help with ushering and clean-up. This is a great opportunity to volunteer for working moms and dads since it starts later and is on a Friday night. Click HERE to sign up.

Register for Summer Quest
There are still lots of camps with space available. Don't miss out on the fun (and some learning too!). All classes with low enrollment have been cancelled, so if you haven't heard that yours was cancelled, you're safe! And if you did receive notice about a cancellation, please contact summerquest@chesterbrookpta.org as soon as possible so we can place you in another camp. We don't want to lose anyone! Please visit the Chesterbrook PTA website at www.chesterbrookpta.org for more information and register now.

Donate New School Supplies and Gently Used Books
Please help us collect items needed by the students of Carlin Springs Elementary School in Arlington and by needy students in our own school pyramid. You can donate new school supplies or gently used chapter books. Please place items in the bin marked School Outreach outside the Media Center by May 19.
Want to help? Delivering donated items our schools is wonderful service-learning opportunity to share with your child. Contact Shawna Saaty or Emily Ludwikowski with any questions or if you and your child would like to volunteer. Thank you for remembering to assist our friends and neighbors in need. |
Get Ready for the Spring Book Fair
Our book specialists at Bookworm are offering a book pre-sale to get started on your summer reading. Please note that not all titles will be sold at the Spring Book Fair (May 31-June 2), and we will not do reorders for out-of-stock titles. So pre-order books to ensure they are available! Here's how it works:
- Browse summer reading titles suggested by our own teachers and other experts
- Pre-order on attached form by Friday, May 13th to ensure your choices are available
- Pick up your books at the Spring Book Fair. Books will be available by Thursday, June 2nd
- Browse a fresh selection of additional titles including games and activities at the Fair
It's that easy! And you will be helping support the library with materials that support curriculum and operating expenses for the year ahead!
We also need some volunteer help. We will have only two one-and-a-half hour shifts each day, which correspond with peak sales times: 1) 8 - 9:30 a.m. and 2) 2:30 - 4 pm. In addition, we will need volunteers to help with set up on Thursday, May 26. Sign up here! We appreciate your help! Questions? Contact Marsha Camp.

Donate Used School Supplies
Again this year we are collecting gently and slightly used school supplies to send to needy children in Nicaragua. Items can be placed in the box marked "Nicaragua" outside the Media Center through the first 2 weeks of summer. Please tear out used pages of notebooks. Contact Ann-Marie Turnage for more information. |
 Attend Race to Nowhere Screening
If you still haven't seen it, St. Luke's School (7005 Georgetown Pike, McLean, VA) is sponsoring a screening of Race to Nowhere on Thursday, May 19th at 7pm. To purchase tickets, please visit the Race to Nowhere website (www.racetonowhere.com/state-screenings/VA). |
 Dispose of Prescriptions
The Safe Community Coalition, of which the PTA is a member, is conducting a Medicine Collection Project in partnership with a number of community-wide agencies. Did you know that improper disposal of expired and unused prescription medicine can lead to: adolescent drug misuse and abuse, accidental intake and poisoning, and environmental damage? Help our community by safely disposing unused or expired medications and participate in our prescription medicine safety awareness campaign. Drop off unused medications at the McLean Community Center (a satellite parking location) on McLean Day, Saturday May 21st, 2011. Please Note: Only medications in liquid or pill form may be dropped off. No needles or pressurized canisters will be accepted.
Other upcoming SCC events include:
- Response to "Race to Nowhere:" The College Admissions Process, McLean HS, May 17, 7pm
- HAZE: The Perils of College Drinking Culture, Langley HS, May 17, 7pm
- Weekend of Suicide Awareness and Prevention, Fairfax Presbyterian Church, various times
