PRESIDENT'S REMARKS

I hope everyone is enjoying the spring, rain, pollen and all! While all the end-of-year school events and upcoming SOL testing make it seem like the year is winding down, our volunteer-needing events are not! Our first Outdoor Movie Night is next Friday, the 13th (the date, not the movie) and we've opened up our sign-up to middle schoolers, in addition to adults. We really need some help with passing out popcorn and clean-up, etc. Please see below for more information. Also, our Spring Book fair is coming, also with more information below.

Thank you to Jennifer Barrett, Maria Huppe, and all of the Room Parents for coordinating Teacher Appreciation week. It's always a big group effort and we thank everyone who contributed. Special thanks to Kim Johnson and her committee for pulling off yet another grand luncheon for the staff last Monday. As usual it looked wonderful! The PTA and school are jointly purchasing Spirit Wear polo shirts for all staff as a gift this year. The shirts and luncheon were well received!

And thank you to Judy Williams for coordinating our Original Works art fundraiser--there are a lot of pieces to this program, including distributing materials to individual students all over the school! Thanks Judy! Orders should have come home with your child last Thursday.  If you haven't seen materials please confirm with your child and/or his/her teacher that materials aren't still at school.  Any questions can be directed to Judy at jandjwilliams@yahoo.com.  This is a bi-annual fundraiser, so we won't be running it next year.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Please help us collect items needed by the students of Carlin Springs Elementary School in Arlington and by needy students in our own school pyramid.   Please consider making a donation of new school supplies or gently used chapter books.   The following school supplies are required by summer school students and many students do not have the resources to purchase them.  Gently-used chapter books will be sent home with students for summer reading.

·           Markers
·           Pencils

·           Colored pencils

·           Glue sticks

·           Scissors

·           Pencil Sharpeners

·           Marble composition books

·           1 inch three-ring binders

·           Staplers

·           Pencil boxes

Please place items in the bin marked School Outreach outside the Media Center  by May 19.

Want to help?  Delivering donated items to our schools is a wonderful service-learning opportunity to share with your child. Contact Shawna Saaty at shawna@saaty.com or Emily Ludwikowski at eludwikowski@gmail.com with any questions or if you and your child would like to volunteer.  Thank you for remembering to assist our friends and neighbors in need.

RSVP AND VOLUNTEER FOR MOVIE NIGHT

CloudyFamily Fun Movie Night is outdoors this year!  Mark your calendars for a Friday, May 13, 8:30 pm showing of "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" (G-rated) on Chesterbrook's blacktop and hill by the playground.

  • Please RSVP here by Wednesday, May 11 so that we may have an accurate headcount (no need to bring the paper tickets emailed to you with registration).
  • Please bring a towel or blanket to sit on and a beverage and snack. The movie will start promptly at 8:30 so please arrive early to get your popcorn and get settled.
  • Please remember this event is a Thank You to our Chesterbrook families for supporting us all year long, so we ask that you bring only immediate family members.
  • This is not a drop-off event -- all children must be supervised by a responsible adult.

We need volunteers to help with popcorn, ushering, and clean-up. Middle School volunteers, here's a fun, easy way to earn volunteer credit!  To sign up, visit http://www.signupgenius.com/go/chesterbrook or contact Melissa House at (703) 506-4558.

CHESTERBROOK 2011 SPRING BOOK FAIR

 Bookworm Central

Our book specialists at Bookworm are offering a book pre-sale to get started on your summer reading.  Please note that not all titles will be sold at the Spring Book Fair (May 31-June 2), and we will not do reorders for out-of-stock titles.  So pre-order books to ensure they are available!

Here's how it works:

  • Browse summer reading titles suggested by our own teachers and other experts
  • Pre-order on attached form by Friday, May 13th to ensure your choices are available
  • Pick up your books at the Spring Book Fair. Books will be available by Thursday,  June 2nd
  • Browse a fresh selection of additional titles including games and activities at the Fair

It's that easy! And you will be helping support the library with materials that support curriculum and operating expenses for the year ahead! For more information, or to help with the Fair, contact Marsha Camp, marshacamp65@gmail.com.

LATER START TIMES FOR HS AND MS STUDENTS

SLEEP Logo

By: Phyllis Payne and Terry Tuley (SLEEP)

The FCPS School Board remains deadlocked on later start times issue for middle school and high school students, but that means they only need one more Board Member's support.  Half of the School Board members recognize that our community CONTINUES TO SUPPORT the need for HEALTHY SCHOOL BELL SCHEDULES for all students and would like to work to find viable solutions.

Goals for 2011:

·       Grow our petition to 10,000.  Please tell friends to sign: http://www.sleepinfairfax.org/petition.htm

·       Work to elect a minimum of seven school board members who will support healthy start times for our high school students. (The entire school board will be up for re-election in November).

·       Push for authentic optimization of bus routing. Staff is hiring another consultant, but consultants have been given oral instructions NOT TO FIX THE BELL TIMES. There are hundreds of ways to re-arrange our bus routes--some cost more, some save more, but true optimization would seek to help students.

·       Study the sports and activities schedules from counties in Virginia that have high school start times at 8 a.m. or later. Identify workable options for Fairfax.

·       Share information with SLEEP supporters about how other families have coped with the too-early start times in Fairfax, including the use of a medical "waiver" to opt out of first block.

·       Seventy-one (71) of 95 counties in Virginia already have high school start times at or after 8:00 a.m., some as late as 9:20 a.m.!  We remain confident that Fairfax can have healthy schedules, too.

We appreciate the community's continued support. Together, we have already helped thousands of Fairfax middle schoolers. Thanks to our efforts, FCPS staff recognize that it is possible to improve transportation and in 2009, staff chose to shift start times closer to 8 a.m. at several middle schools and SAVED money.

Next step:  Help the high school and secondary school students who still have 7:20 start times.

STOP HUNGER NOW - TWO UPCOMING EVENTS

Empty Bowls

May 18th Empty Bowls Ice Cream Social Fundraiser

The McLean High School Interact Club, Key Club, National Art Honor Society and Student Government, along with the MHS PTSA, invite you to an Empty Bowls Ice Cream Social on Wednesday, May 18th from 5-8 pm in the McLean HS cafeteria.   Using bowls made at McLean High School's March 3rd Empty Bowls event, you will be able to select a bowl to fill with ice cream. In exchange for a suggested donation of $10, guests are asked to keep a bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. All money raised will be donated to Stop Hunger Now.

Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger, and through Empty Bowls, we will be making ceramic bowls to raise funds for Stop Hunger Now. Please join us for this exciting event and help spread the word!

June 11th Stop Hunger Now 10,000 Meals Event

Stop Hunger Now is an immensely fun, hands-on and rewarding experience for anyone of any age. A group of 40- 50 volunteers can package 10,000 meals in just two hours.  Join us for a community wide event on June 11 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in McLean (corner of Westmoreland and Chain Bridge Road).  Volunteers of all ages are needed on June 11 to help package over 150,000 meals in a single day.  Students, Scouts and Seniors can all lend a hand. Under nutrition contributes to more than one-half of the 9.7 million deaths of children under five each year in developing countries. This means that one child dies every six seconds from malnutrition and related causes.  (Source: World Food Programme, 2009)

The Stop Hunger Now assembly process combines rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a flavoring mix including 21 essential vitamins and minerals into small meal packages. These meal packages are shipped around the world to support school feeding programs and crisis relief. The food stores easily, transports quickly and has a shelf-life of five years. These are the kinds of meals that were distributed in Haiti one year ago and in Japan as we speak.

Questions or to sign up to help package meals on June 11th, please contact Lucinda Romberg at Lucinda.romberg@verizon.netVisit www.stophungernow.org to learn more about the program.  Groups are welcome, but please note that this is a not a drop off event, adult  supervision is needed.

CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN AT ALDEN THEATER

Cheaper by the DozenDon't miss the McLean Community Players' presentation of Cheaper by the Dozen. This delightful family comedy is based on the growing-up years in the 1920s of the 12 children of Frank and Lillian Gilbreth, two internationally known industrial engineers.  Frank Gilbreth, a pioneering efficiency expert, tests his theories on his large family. The results are terribly embarrassing, funny and---it must be admitted---extremely effective! Director Adriana Hardy leads the lively cast.

To purchase tickets, contact OvationTix by phone (1-866-811-411) or order online. For further information, visit the McLean Community Players Website.

Performance Schedule: April 29-May 14: Fridays and Saturdays, 8 pm; Sundays, 3 pm
