Pertinent Points for the Week Ahead
from the Chesterbrook PTA
Vol.2, No.25
April 29, 2011
I hope everyone had a nice spring break and is ready for these last 8 weeks of school! There are many of volunteer opportunities coming up with Teacher Appreciation Week, post-SOL testing treats, Outdoor Movie Night, our Spring Book Fair, field trips, All-day grade level events, and end of year parties. We recognize it's hard to find the time this late in the year, but really do need to make this last big push before summer. If you haven't had a chance to volunteer this year, now is the time!

As an update to the gym floor renovation, we have received an estimate from FCPS (who must do the work) and are determining if we have the funds to cover it and can share costs with other community users. Assuming we can move forward, we will be putting forth a motion for a budget amendment at our May 10, 7:30 pm PTA meeting and then voting on the amendment during a 5-minute PTA meeting required by our by-laws at the start of the June 14th Band Concert, where we will also elect new officers.

Thank you to everyone who completed our survey! It really does help us direct our efforts in the future.

To Do This Week
Get Ready for Teacher Appreciation Week
Teacher Appreciation Week begins Monday. You should have been contacted by your Room Parent(s), and if not, please contact them immediately. Most classes have sign-ups to bring in breakfast and/or lunch treats for their homeroom teachers and a couple other teachers in the school, as well as some other fun things for all kids to do. You don't want to miss out on showering our wonderful teachers with all the appreciation we have!

Also, we still have a few slots for volunteers and cooks for our annual Teacher Appreciation Luncheon on Monday afternoon. We really need to fill these slots and appreciate all the help we can get. Many of the teachers tell us they look forward to this fun tradition of thanks all year! To sign up to bring food or help with set up or cleanup, go to: www.SignUpGenius.com/go/chesterbrook3. Thanks to everyone who has already signed up!
SummerQuestRegister for Summer Quest

This weekend the Summer Quest Directors will determine which classes have not reached enrollment minimums (which are set so that we don't lose money). Please register NOW to secure your camp! Don't miss out on the fun (and some learning too!). Please visit the Chesterbrook PTA website at www.chesterbrookpta.org for more information and register now. If you have registered online but not yet sent in a check, you must do so to secure your spot. Email summerquest@chesterbrookpta.org with any questions.

RSVP and Volunteer for Outdoor Movie Night
This year we are moving our Family Fun Movie Night outdoors! Mark your calendars for a Friday, May 13, 8:30 pm showing of "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" (G-rated) on Chesterbrook's blacktop and hill by the playground.
  • Cost: FREE, includes popcorn
  • RSVP here by Wednesday, May 11 so that we may have an accurate headcount, though you do not need to bring the ticket emailed to you with registration. You can now see who else is attending (or at least the parent's name).
  • Please bring a towel or blanket to sit on and a beverage and snack. The movie will start promptly at 8:30 so please arrive early to get your popcorn and get settled.
  • Please remember this event is a Thank You to our Chesterbrook families for supporting us all year long, so we ask that you bring only immediate family members.
  • This is not a drop-off event, and all children must be supervised by a responsible adult.
  • We need volunteers to help with popcorn, ushering, and clean-up. This is a great opportunity to volunteer for working moms and dads since it starts later and is on a Friday night. Click HERE to sign up.
Help During Our Chesterbrook's Outdoor Workdayearth day
On Saturday morning from 9 am to noon, we will be working on the outdoor classroom located at the Falls Church Water Supply's Pumping Station Grounds across Kirby from the school and take part in a general cleanup of school grounds. We will be joined by volunteers from Vinson Hall and the City of Falls Church and a sorority from George Washington University. Materials and some yard tools will be provided (though you may want to bring some of your own, such as work gloves, pitchforks, shovels, trowels, and wheelbarrows). We look forward to a great turnout, even if families can only stop by for a short time!
Race to Nowhere
Attend Race to Nowhere Screening
If you still haven't seen it, St. Luke's School (7005 Georgetown Pike, McLean, VA) is sponsoring a screening of Race to Nowhere on Thursday, May 19th at 7pm.  To purchase tickets, please visit the Race to Nowhere website (www.racetonowhere.com/state-screenings/VA).
Donate to American Heart Association
This week, Chesterbrook students took part in Jump Rope for Heart--a jump rope program sponsored by the American Heart Association.  Students participated in special jumping events during their regular PE class time on April 26-29.  Earlier in the year, they watched a  video from the American Heart Association where they learned about how their heart works and what they can do to prevent heart disease and stroke.  Students had the option to raise money for the American Heart Association by collecting donations from family and friends. If you're interested in donating to this event, but didn't get a chance to yet, you can still participate by sending in your envelope by Friday, May 13th.

Once the Chesterbrook PTA has tallied the funds, we'll send out a report on how much money was raised.
