Tomorrow night is Chesterbrook's First Annual International Night! Starting at 6:30 pm in the cafeteria, 18 countries will be represented by Chesterbrook families with photos, artifacts, interesting facts about the country...and most important...food! While you cannot count on a full dinner, plan to taste a wide variety of bites representative of each country. Our Chinese delegation will also be writing names in Chinese calligraphy with traditional brush and ink. Children can take home a "passport" with a visa stamp for each country they visit. Thanks to Nancy Stuckwisch and her team and all the families representing the countries. In addition, or perhaps more importantly for some, we have media coverage from the FCPS Red Apple 21 news program "SchoolScene" to be shown February 14 at 1 pm, 6 pm, and 10 pm on Channel 21. Chesterbrook is going to be on television folks! The producer and videographer will shooting right at the beginning of the event at 6:30. We really need a good turnout if we're being featured on TV. Please join us!
And next Tuesday, please plan to come to the February 8 general membership PTA meeting at 7:30 pm. After some quick PTA business, we will have a presentation by Julia Seroskie of MassMutual on financial planning for college, which will be here before we know it! See below for more information.
Finally, please see below for additional help we need for the Online Auction and Fun Fair. Together these represent our biggest fundraiser and biggest fun day, but it takes a ton of work! Thanks to Julia Nelson and the Auction team and Trisha Downey, Kim Johnson, and the Fun Fair team for working so hard through was is becoming an awfully long winter!

Help with Online Auction
The Online Auction opens next weekend! (Today's flyer was already printed before our little vacation last week, so it said we had 2 weeks left, but we're down to just one now.)
We have over 200 items, but the value of the items is significantly lower than last year. We'd love some more big ticket items, such as vacation homes, electronics (Apple and Nintendo products, in particular), sports events tickets, and restaurant gift cards. If you aren't able to solicit new donations, we have would love some assistance with former auction donors who have not yet donated this year. We have a list but there aren't enough hours in the day for our small committee to get to all of them.
If you can help solicit new donations, all you need is a Donor Form to donate an item or request a donation. Please visit the PTA's auction website for more details. Thank you in advance for your support and we look forward to your participation in the fundraiser. If you have questions, please contact us at auctions@chesterbrook.org. Plan for College...Now
One financial goal that most parents share is a college education for their children. With college costs increasing at a faster rate than general inflation, saving for college can be a daunting task. You can, however, pursue this important financial goal by establishing a plan and taking action today. Join us for a special educational workshop where you'll learn about:
- Current and Future College costs
- Sources of college funds
- Financial aid, scholarships, and loans
- 529 plans and Coverdell Education Savings Accounts
- Investment options for college savings
Sponsored by Julia Seroskie and Rachel Shutt of MassMutual Financial Group on February 8, 7:30 pm in the Media Center. Feel free to bring any guests who might be interested.

 Go Running!
Exciting GOTR News for Girls in Grade 3 to 5! We will be having two sections of Girls on the Run this spring! This popular program has been oversubscribed for the last few semesters. This spring, we will be offering two sections -- one coached by Ms. Hauser and Ms. Dillman and one coached by Ms. Myren and Ms. Navarro. Both sections will meet on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30 pm. GOTR will begin on March 7 and end on May 20. The 5K will take place at George Mason University on May 15. GOTR uses an innovative and fun curriculum designed exclusively for pre-teen girls to address specific life skills through the use of games, warm-ups and workouts. The goals of the program are to encourage positive emotional, social, mental, and physical development. Registration for the GOTR lottery takes place from February 11 until February 17. Please go to www.gotrnova.org to register during that time. While there will be a lottery if necessary, we are hopeful that having two sections will mean that all interested girls will be able to participate. The fee for the program is $165. Financial aid is available. If you have additional questions, please contact the GOTR PTA Representative, Anna Kraus, at 703-533-0674 or akraus@cov.com. |
Help with Fun Fair
Fun Fair comes right on the heels of the Online Auction on March 12, and the committee has already been working hard on a new and updated Fair. We have new games, new food (Subway sandwiches, in addition to pizza), new little kid area with its own moonbounce, new vendor area, and the biggest change: all-you-can-play-all-day wristbands (limited for Cake Walk and Pick-a-Pocket wins).
The Fun Fair Co-Chairs are looking for a new or used Wii system for the video game room. Contact Trisha Downey or Kim Johnson if you have one available to donate or lend.
Look out in the coming weeks for information from your Room Parent on volunteering on the day of Fun Fair, as well information on online ordering of wristbands/tickets, cake donations, and Balloon Raffle donations.
