I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving weekend!
Next week is Inclusive Schools Week, which is a nationwide, annual event recognizing and celebrating inclusion of all students in education. This is something we should be very proud of at Chesterbrook. Thanks to our Special Education Committee chairs, Kim Suringa and Megan Dennis, for promoting inclusion in school and PTA activities all year long and for helping us celebrate next week! The PTA special education committee assists and supports the school community in bringing awareness of our students' rich diversity in learning styles and abilities and as a support group for parents that are new to our school and/or new to the world of special needs education. The Committee is also planning a parent coffee for January 2011. Parents who have children receiving special services should contact Kim or Megan for information or to get involved.
In addition, the committee is sponsoring refreshments at the upcoming Principal's Coffee, December 17, 10:30-11;30 am. Come learn about Chesterbrook's special education services, and, in the spirit of inclusion, anything else you might want to talk about with Mr. Fuqua. I hope to see you there!
Now that winter approaches (and winter temperatures are here), don't forget to send your kids with warm jackets, hats, and gloves! If it is above freezing, they have outside recess. Please label everything. There is a mounting pile in the lost-and-found in the cafeteria if you are missing something...

"Like" the Chesterbrook PTA on Facebook
In order to keep the Friday Digest shorter and more focused on the Chesterbrook community, we have moved many of our non-Chesterbrook news to our Facebook page. Last week we put up the school's Turkey Trot video and Tom Kierein's morning shout-out and had a few "likes," and we've also had some positive feedback in our news about Escuela Caracol, our sister school in Guatemala. You can see updates anytime by clicking on our Facebook page, even if you are not a Facebook member. We're highlighting Chesterbrook events and news, such as the Toys for Tots drive, as well as goings-on at Longfellow and McLean HS and in the McLean Community. Check us out!
Also, social media isn't social if others aren't participating. If you have ideas on events or articles that might be of interest to our community, please forward them to Lori Boerner.

Read about Chesterbrook in the News
Finally, it's not all Churchill Road Elementary in the news! Thanks to Amy Hill and Betty Ende for getting us some press. If you have other newsworthy Chesterbrook, please contact pr@chesterbrook.org, and let's start tooting our own horn!

 Help Others
On behalf of our partner schools, THANK YOU to the Chesterbrook Community for its tremendous support during the fall clothing and grocery gift card drive. The children of Carlin Springs sent us dozens of lovely and heartfelt handmade thank you cards, which we will hang in the PTA workroom. Please stop in to admire them! We continue our collection of grocery store gift cards in any denomination during the month of December. Food assistance is especially important during the winter school holidays because of the absence of free school breakfasts and lunches. Your generosity has done so much to help our neighbors and is a powerful example for our children to learn just how easy and rewarding it is to make a difference in lives of others. Grocery gift cards can be sent through backpack mail in an envelope marked "PTA School Outreach" through December 16th. Please do not hesitate to contact Shawna Saaty or Emily Ludwikowskiwith any questions. THANK YOU! |
Sign Up for Silver Diner's Eat Well, Do Well Program
What better time of year to take a break and eat out -- healthily! Every family should have received an Eat Well, Do Well card in their Thursday envelopes. If your family didn't receive one, please contact Melinda Settles to get a replacement. Register your card and preload it to start earning for the PTA every time you eat out! The food is great, and you can eat at any Silver Diner restaurant. We've only had about 30 of our 430+ families sign up. Go to the EWDW website to get started!

Learn Some Chinese
The Chesterbrook Morning News episodes of Time for Chinese are now online. Through the school's website you can link to the iTunes podcasts of the 2 minute clips the students see every morning. You can also go straight to the iTunes page. It's a great way to practice every day!

Support Outside Volunteer Opportunities
The School Outreach Committee is launching a new initiative to inform Chesterbrook families about local volunteering opportunities. If you have any volunteer opportunities you'd like included, please email Emily Ludwikowski (eludwikowski@gmail.com) or Shawna Saaty (shawna@saaty.com). There is a Stop Hunger event on Saturday, Nov. 6. For more information and links to register, please visit the PTA website. |
