PRESIDENT'S REMARKS |
Of course Thanksgiving is over and the crazy season is upon us, but in the interests of keeping that thankful feeling going (and because we didn't have a November Chronicle), I have spent some time thinking about what I'm thankful for with regard to Chesterbrook and the PTA:
· I'm thankful for a husband and two kids who understand, or at least accept, that this year is a little different with a nearly back-to-work mom, and who remind me of why we all do this PTA stuff.
· I'm thankful for a wonderful group of ladies and a few good men who have planned so many events and programs of the PTA, particularly those who've dreamt up new and different ways to do things.
· I'm thankful for a school community where we never lack for volunteers to sign up to help with School Kits, Back to School Folders, classroom centers and projects, field trips, before and after school activities, Strategies Lab, Book Fair, Thanksgiving lunch...and Fun Fair and auction and everything coming up.
· I'm thankful for a principal who can make amazing things happen with some savvy budgeting and creative scheduling.
· I'm thankful for our teachers who fit so much into a day, a week, a year, and in particular, those in whose classes my children have been.
· I'm thankful for two past PTA presidents who've done and know so much.
· I'm thankful for families who are beyond generous with regards to our fundraising.
· I'm thankful for a few people who've recently saved me from website madness.
· I'm thankful for a treasurer who knows what she's doing.
· I'm thankful for my "usuals," who keep me sane.
Several friends from near and far recently forwarded me an article from the New York Times about mothers who over-volunteer and begin to feel volunteer burnout. The conclusion of the article was that we ought to eschew volunteering and cease it. I have a different take: we don't have to do everything every time. Volunteering isn't the problem; volunteering for everything is. We are fortunate at Chesterbrook to have a big enough cadre of volunteers that if everyone who has some time to donate does so, we're in good shape. I hope others didn't read the article and hang up their yellow volunteer nametags for good. And with that, I'm going to sign up for GRECO day and my classes' holiday parties...
I hope everyone enjoys the season!

Science Comes Alive at Chesterbrook!
By: Tiffany Albrecht
How can you tell when chemistry is happening? What's the difference between matter and energy?
On November 16th at 9:30 a.m., Chesterbrook's kindergarten thru second graders learned to ask and answer these important questions. The Maryland Science Center brought their travelling science show entitled "What's the Matter? Chemistry with Fizz, Foam, and Flash" to Chesterbrook Elementary School. This show explored the states of matter, physical changes, and chemical reactions through loud, bright, and visually thrilling experiments. At 2 p.m. the same day, third and sixth grade classes watched as flash dazzles, foam oozes, and fizz flows during a second performance of "What's the Matter?" geared to their level.
From fire to lasers, Chesterbrook fourth and fifth graders explored the history of light and observe its ability to bend and bounce. Students travelled along the electromagnetic spectrum and witnessed the spectacular properties of ultraviolet, visible, and infrared light while discovering how it is produced and used during the show, "The Light Fantastic." Maryland Science Center presented this special light show on November 17th at 2 p.m.

Thanks for your support at Book Fair!
It was great to see so many parents and students in costumes and PJs at the events! Most of the money raised at Chesterbrook's Fall Book Fair will be used to supplement the reduced library budget from the county and will go towards the purchase of books and other media. |
COMMUNITY OUTREACH |
Thank you for contributions to Carlin Springs!
On behalf of our partner schools, THANK YOU to the Chesterbrook Community for its tremendous support during the fall clothing and grocery gift card drive. The children of Carlin Springs sent us dozens of lovely and heartfelt handmade thank you cards, which we will hang in the PTA workroom. Please stop in to admire them! We continue our collection of grocery store gift cards in any denomination during the month of December. Food assistance is especially important during the winter school holidays because of the absence of free school breakfasts and lunches. Your generosity has done so much to help our neighbors and is a powerful example for our children to learn just how easy and rewarding it is to make a difference in lives of others.
Grocery gift cards can be sent through backpack mail in an envelope marked "PTA School Outreach" through December 16th. Please do not hesitate to contact Shawna Saaty (shawna@saaty.com) or Emily Ludwikowski (eludwikowski@gmail.com) with any questions. THANK YOU!

HEALTH AND WELLNESS UPDATES |
The Health and Wellness Committee visited Mrs. Kelly's first grade class this week to discuss nutrition. The children were introduced to many new fruits and vegetables and discussed the "Eat A Rainbow" program. The kids were encouraged to have many colors on their plates for every meal. The foods tasted were; pomegranates, kumquats, kiwi, cucumber, pear and mango. The kids also made healthy shakes. The first one was pineapple, coconut milk and spinach! They loved it and were happy they didn't taste the spinach! The other shake was strawberry/banana. The importance of a healthy breakfast was discussed. Overall, a huge hit! The pomegranates seemed to be the overall favorite!
We'd love to have more members of our committee. If you're interested in getting involved, please contact us at rbarnard2002@gmail.com, yogamelinda@gmail.com, or vpfundraising@chesterbrook.org .
Have a happy and healthy holiday season!

Chesterbrook's First Annual Turkey Trot
In conjunction with the schoolwide campaign to promote health and wellness, on Wednesday, November 24th, Chesterbrook Elementary School students and staff participated in the first annual Turkey Trot. The Turkey Trot was a school-wide event where each grade level came out and sprinted, jogged or walked around the school's track. Organized by Chesterbrook's P.E. teacher, Jay Levesque, this was a fun way for Chesterbrook students to get fresh air and exercise before the big meal on Thanksgiving. Later, students used math to calculate how far they trotted!
| Second grade classes are trotting back inside as fourth grade classes are headed out to the track |
Check out Brian Trompeter's story about Chesterbrook's Turkey Trot in the November 29th edition of the Sun Gazette:

WHAT'S NEW IN THE CHESTERBROOK LIBRARY? |
|
Library Mural Brings the Past Alive By: Aisha Kashif
"Study the past if you would divine the future."
Confucius, Chinese Philosopher (BC 551- BC 479)
Our school is home to many works of art. From kindergartners to sixth graders, everybody gets a chance to use various colors, forms and media to present their thoughts and ideas. But these days, our very own library is slowly becoming home to something special. Something, as they say, quite timeless! Local artist and muralist, Jolene Hemeon, is working on a mural in the Chesterbrook library to bring into focus the events which shape our lives today, using colors, words, and of course history.
The Chesterbrook PTA Digest caught up with Jolene to talk about her ideas and thoughts while working on this project.
Tell us a little bit about yourself. "I love to paint and design anything from furniture, to walls, to miniatures, to set designs. It's very satisfying to think about a design project and bring it to fruition. Consequently, I've been involved in the arts and decorative arts since 1989. My work has evolved to a family business, Hemeon Studios. My daughter and son work with me to bring beauty to walls. From color consulting to painting to the newest looks in decorative art, we offer many services."
What were some of the thoughts that went into choosing which events to depict in the mural timeline? "It was decided that the timeline of the world would follow the SOLs for grades 1-6. Based on the criteria, Mrs. Moseley gave me 10 pages of a written timeline of events taken directly from the SOLs. My job is to take the written timeline, the space requirements, and all the images available and make a work of art!"
When did you start work on it and when do you expect to finish the mural? "I started working on the Mural in June of 2010 and I should be finished by June of 2011. The next panel is scheduled to be installed on December 22nd."
Which reference materials did you use for your research? "Much of my research was from books given to me by Mrs. Moseley from the Chesterbrook Elementary school library. Some of the research was done from other books and from the Internet.
In your opinion, what has been the most difficult part of this assignment? "There is so much information; the hardest part has been editing all of the images and finding the one image that portrays the event in history that fits in the mural."
Where did you choose the actual scenes from? Or did you choose just the event and then made the pictures yourself? "To me, each event should be an iconic image such as Buddha, or the image should tell a story such as Vikings raiding villages. Of course, the whole thing has to be worked on keeping the kids in mind. Colors, codes and images, all tie up the timeline in a cohesive manner. I also used short sentences and block letters so that younger kids could also understand. I think that one of the most important aspects is to show how everything and everyone, whether they live in Asia or Europe, is interrelated to each other. We aren't alone. Universal humanity has made it all possible."
Up to this point, which part of the timeline have you enjoyed working on the most? "I have enjoyed the research. It's a great refresher course for me and I'm learning as I go. I like the design element of each panel and of course the painting of the scenes and bringing the mural to life is a kick!"
What do you plan for the final mural? "You'll have to wait and see the surprise! It might be something pertinent to McLean, Virginia, perhaps Chesterbrook or a specific event in our own American History, I haven't really decided on it yet."
Any words of advice for our budding artists? "Be persistent. Art can be a gift but it can be a learned skill too. Keep at it, use good materials, keep a sketch book and have a creative work space around you. It's all about overcoming fears and obstacles. It's all about the desire to reach your goal, no matter what it is." |

Did you know?? Ø It takes Jolene 40 hours to complete one panel which is 8 feet long! Ø Jolene has used 4 main colors to depict certain civilizations: Red for Asian, Gold for African, Green for European and Blue for American. Ø She is currently working on a 45 by 90 ft mural on the ceiling of a building in Arlington! Check out www.hemeonstudios.com and her fan page on Facebook to see Jolene Hemeon's work. Here's what Chesterbrook students have to say about the mural: "It sort of brings out the library more. Before there wasn't much color. I think its really cool up there!" Daniel S - Fourth Grade "It's really cool having the mural in the library. Ancient world history is one of my favorite topics!" Tommy M - Sixth Grade Next time you're at the school, come check it out yourself! |
