Pertinent Points for the Week Ahead
from the Chesterbrook PTA
Vol.2, No.9November 5, 2010
At next week's evening General Membership meeting (7:30 pm, Media Center), we will be featuring Anita Capizzi, an RN and wellness coach, speaking about nutrition. See below for more information and topics Anita will cover. All questions welcome! Let's make sure we have a good turnout.

We're still trying to get everyone resubscribed to Chesterbrook emails after we have had about 60 email addresses get automatically "unsubscribed" from our Constant Contact account. If you are receiving this, your email is fine. And welcome back and thank you to those who resubscribed. But if you know someone who didn't, please direct them to our website to resubscribe. We don't want anyone to be left off any important emails! The school uses our database too, so you want to stay subscribed!

Thanks to everyone who worked and shopped at the Book Fair, and especially to Beth Lord and Marsha Camp. Beth graciously stepped back into the Fair after I "found" another PTA job and is finishing up a long career of book fairs at Chesterbrook, and Marsha graciously accepted some not-so-strong arming. We had another successful Fair, bringing in over $6,000 profits for the Media Center.  Look out in the November Chronicle for more on profits and what Mrs. Moseley will do with them.

Don't forget to turn your clocks back this weekend!

To Do This Week

  • The state of health in America today
  • Childhood sugar consumption
  • Negative effects of the standard American diet

  • Navigating the grocery store
  • How to read food labels
Don't miss this opportunity to hear the facts and get real answers to your nutrition questions. Visit Anita's website at www.realfoodrealhealth.com.
Sign Up to Help Serve Thanksgiving Lunch
We are looking forward to our traditional Thanksgiving lunch on Veteran's day, Thursday November 11th!  On regular lunch days the cafeteria staff usually serves about 320 lunches.  This year they are planning on serving over 800 Thanksgiving day lunches!! Don't forget to purchase your tickets so the staff can make sure theirs enough "pumpkin dessert." Please review your class assigned time you received in the mail or online.

To assist the staff with this huge undertaking, we need many helpers. When the more than 40 volunteer slots are filled, we will be able to  keep on our tight schedule and help everyone have a pleasant lunch with their student. Please use our Sign-up Genius to help with a 45 minute shift or with set up the day before if you are able.  Helping with this event is a great way to see old friends and make some new ones in our Chesterbrook Community.

I hope to see you there!

Sign Up for Silver Diner's Eat Well, Do Well ProgramSilver Diner
Every family should have received an Eat Well, Do Well card in their Thursday envelopes. If your family didn't receive one, please contact Melinda Settles to get a replacement. Register your card and preload it to start earning for the PTA every time you eat out! The food is great, and you can eat at any Silver Diner restaurant. We've had 29 families sign up already--thank you! Go to the EWDW website to get started!

Join the PTA--It's Never Too Late!
On behalf of the Chesterbrook PTA I would like to extend an enthusiastic THANK YOU to all the parents who have joined the PTA. As of mid-October, we've had 354 families join - that's an incredible 83 percent of our total families. Our goal is always an ambitious 100%, so if you haven't done so, please consider joining today.

In a recent Washington Post article on the Washington, D.C. school chancellor situation, one sentence in particular stood out to me: No great school has a weak PTA. When parents, teachers, administration and staff are working together for the mutual benefit of our children,  great things happen. At Chesterbrook we are incredibly lucky to have such an active parent community.

In addition to all the good stuff your dollars provide, membership has its benefits in that members receive a FREE copy of the school directory. Non-member price is $8.

Can't remember if you joined or not? It happens. Just contact me at gina@stationwagon.com and I'll check let you know. Thank you!

Gina Manning, VP for Membership

Pick Up Great American Items
Many families' Great American items and prizes for online orders are still in the open pod awaiting pickup. Boxes of merchandise and prizes are labeled with the child's name and teacher. Please retrieve your items then, so your children don't have to carry them home.

You can still order items online through our Great American sale and credit the school. As a reminder, our school code is 1874999; online orders over $60 are shipped for free.  Get a jump on holiday shopping! Any questions, call/contact Judy Williams at 703.442.3984 or email
Judy Williams.
Donate Sweet Treats You're Not Gonna Eat
Don't let that left over Halloween Candy go to waste or your hips! Put those treats to good use by donating them to the Chesterbrook Fun Fair. The Fun Fair committee will gladly take your leftover candy and use them to fill the always-popular "guesstimates" jars. Please drop off your Starburst, your Snickers, your SweetTarts, your Skittles and any other wrapped goodies in our designated drop box in the school office from now through November 12th.

Thank you for your help!!

Keep Cafeteria Card Funded
If you child comes home with this sticker, their lunch card is low. Please send in more money to the cafeteria. As a service, the cafeteria staff will charge a PTA lunch card for students whose account is underfunded. When the student's card is funded again, the PTA account will be reimbursed first, so you must send in enough to cover the lunches already purchased, plus lunches moving forward. And after you have reimbursed the cafeteria and PTA, please consider setting up a mylunchmoney.com account with an automatic reload. This is a great way to be sure your children always have lunch money. It allows you to pay by credit card, and it rolls over from year to year.
Support Outside Volunteer Opportunities
The School Outreach Committee is launching a new initiative to inform Chesterbrook families about local volunteering opportunities. If you have any volunteer opportunities you'd like included, please email Emily Ludwikowski (eludwikowski@gmail.com) or Shawna Saaty (shawna@saaty.com).  There is a Stop Hunger event on Saturday, Nov. 6. For more information and links to register, please visit the PTA website.
