PRESIDENT'S REMARKS |
As the first quarter comes to a close, I would like to thank our PTA Board Members who have led us through our first big projects. Thank you to Judy Williams, Karen Clark, and Candace Stromberg-Soberman for setting up and processing all our Great American Opportunities fundraising program and orders. Items will be available for pick-up during the teacher conference workdays November 1 and 2.
Thanks also to Beth Lord and Marsha Camp for organizing our Fall Book Fair. If you haven't made it in yet, you have a little more time. The Fair will be open on Friday until 4 pm and on Monday, November 1st during teacher conferences. The Book Fair is my favorite Chesterbrook event, so I hope you can make it. Thanks Beth and Marsha and all the volunteers who have worked this week and next.
Thank you to Betty Ende for taking over our Reflections program, with no experience and little background! Entries are currently with the judges and we will submit Chesterbrook's winners to the county next week. Look out for an announcement of the winners, as well as the actual entries in the Media Center window display when you are at school for the Thanksgiving Luncheon, Thursday, November 11. Hope to see you all there.
And lastly, Dana Renz and Nancy Stuckwisch have undertaken the monstrous task of preparing our database and Family Directory. This involves combing through our PTA website database accounts, comparing contact information with the school's data on teacher assignments, cleaning up address and telephone formats, and formatting the directory itself. It is tedious work on a moving target! Kudos to Dana and Nancy for even surviving! The directory is at the printer this week-thanks Gralla Family!-and will be distributed as soon as it is available.
Speaking of our database and website, I plan to form a committee this winter to investigate rebuilding the PTA website on a more standard platform, including revising the afterschool registration process, the database and directory, and Chipmunk Avenue (our store for paying for memberships, camps and classes, and school kits). If you are interested in joining the committee let me know, particularly if this is a project you or your business could undertake.
Our next PTA General Membership meeting is November 9 at 7:30 pm. After some brief PTA business, our Health, Safety, Wellness, and Nutrition Committee will present a program on Nutrition for Academic Excellence featuring Anita Capizzi, RN, CHC (realfoodrealhealth.com). This should be very interesting and informative and a great addition to our focus on improving nutrition. We would love to have a good turnout for Ms. Capizzi -- hope to see you there!
Don't forget about Wacky Hair Day tomorrow!

Online Auction Meeting Kicks Off Nov. 4
Curious what Chesterbrook's Online Auction is all about and want to learn more? Join Julia Nelson and the Online Auction Committee Thursday, Nov. 4 at 8:45 a.m. for the auction kick-off meeting at Julia's house (1970 Massachusetts Ave. in the Franklin Park neighborhood). The Online Auction is Chesterbrook's premier fundraising event of the year and needs many hands to make it a success.
If you don't like cold-calling or begging for auction items, that's okay. There is a job for you. While solicitations are key to a successful auction, it's not ALL about asking for donations, and most jobs are done at home on your own schedule. Here are few things the committee needs help with:
· thank you notes to donors
· inputting auction items
· PR and marketing
· proof-reading
· brain-storming about businesses to solicit
· follow-up distribution of items at the Fun Fair
· mailing items that have been purchased by bidders out
of the immediate area
Be a part of something amazing. Come learn more at the kick-off meeting with Julia and her team. All are welcome!
If you plan to attend and/or have questions, please let Julia know julia@nelsonco.com or 703-534-2611.

Got Sweet Treats You're Not Gonna Eat?
Don't let that left over Halloween Candy go to waste or your hips! Put those treats to good use by donating them to the Chesterbrook Fun Fair. The Fun Fair committee will gladly take your leftover candy and use them to fill the always-popular "guesstimates" jars. Please drop off your Starburst, your Snickers, your SweetTarts, your Skittles and any other wrapped goodies in our designated drop box in the school office from now through November 12th.
Thank you for your help!! Trisha Downey & Kim Johnson, Fun Fair Co-Chairs |
JOIN US FOR THANKSGIVING LUNCH |
Join Us for Thanksgiving Lunch By: Kim Johnson On Thursday, November 11th, Veteran's Day, parents, sibling and other family members are invited to join their Chesterbrook student(s) for a Thanksgiving lunch with all the trimmings! Our students love to have their family members attend the lunch, so please check your calendars and make every effort to attend. You will receive a letter in the mail from Chesterbrook which has the ticket order form and your child's scheduled time for lunch. We appreciate it when you buy the tickets in advance, as it allows our cafeteria staff to better plan for the event, but tickets will be available at the door, as well. Many hands are necessary to make this lunch an enjoyable event for everyone and it's a great opportunity to put meaning into the "giving" part of the holiday. If you can volunteer some time to help set up on Wednesday afternoon and/or before or after your student's lunch, please take a look at and sign up to help on our SignUpGenius : www.SignUpGenius.com/go/thanksgiving218 Signing up to volunteer is very easy and much appreciated! We need helpers to set up decorations on Wednesday from 4:00 to 6:00 pm, many helpers for serving the lunch on Thursday, in 45-minute slots beginning at 10:15 am, and a few for clean up right after the lunch for about an hour ending around 3:00 pm. Helping serve Thanksgiving Lunch is a very fun way to get to know a lot of the other parents and kids at our great school. I hope to see many of you dishing up turkey, gravy, "pumpkin dessert", and all the other holiday goodies! Please sign up to volunteer now! If you have any questions, please contact me at KimJohnson5@gmail.com or (703)220-7456. Thanks, Kim Johnson

COMMUNITY OUTREACH |
The School Outreach Committee would like to thank the Chesterbrook Community for their generous donations to needy families this fall. For Carlin Springs Elementary School we collected over 10 large bags of boys and girls clothing, coats, boots and shoes; 5 bags of toys for their fall festival goody bags; and $100 in grocery cards. The Carlin Springs staff was very appreciative! Thank you also to our great volunteers who helped deliver the items this week. We also collected additional grocery cards for needy families in our school pyramid.
The School Outreach Committee is launching a new initiative to inform Chesterbrook families about local volunteering opportunities. If you have any volunteer opportunities you'd like included, please email Emily Ludwikowski (eludwikowski@gmail.com) or Shawna Saaty (shawna@saaty.com). "EAT A RAINBOW" PROGRAM |
The Chesterbrook Health and Wellness Committee is encouraging the kids to "Eat A Rainbow". Last week was Fairfax County Health and Nutrition Week and Chesterbrook celebrated in many ways.
Our cafeteria has posters of actual Chesterbrook kids painted as their favorite color food - we have red, blue, green, yellow and orange! The posters serve as a reminder to eat many colors.
The committee also had food tastings in many of the classrooms. Children were introduced to jicama and star fruit and other basic and exotic fruits and vegetables.
Our morning news program had daily clips reminding the kids about Health and Nutrition week. Videos included our school mascot, Chester the Chipmunk, joining the kids in the cafeteria and encouraging good healthy choices.
Chester also had workouts with our PE teachers and explored the gardens to promote being outside. Overall, the program was a success with the kids. The Health and Wellness committee will continue the program for the entire year, so look out for more healthy fun!

STAFF PROFILE |
Meet Chesterbrook's Art Teachers

Sara Kodsi Michelle Gottke
Chesterbrook welcomed two new Art Teachers this year: Sara Kodsi who is the full-time Art Teacher and a part-time Art Teacher, Michelle Gottke, who works at Chetserbrook on Wednesdays. Mrs. Kodsi and Mrs. Gottke are inspiring Chesterbrook students to be creative! Please read on to learn more about our art teachers and the art program at Chesterbrook.
What activities do Chesterbrook students work on during their art class?
Mrs. Kodsi: "This year in art, students will explore the fine arts and create a variety of pieces such as drawings, paintings, collages, ceramics, prints, sculptures, weavings, and stitchery. We will also be keeping a sketchbook which allows us to plan and sketch ideas before we start projects. Sometimes we will use the sketchbook to review material techniques and art concepts from previous lessons." |
|
What kind of background is needed to be an art teacher?
Mrs. Kodsi: "To be an art teacher not only do you need to be creative, organized, and an advocate of the Arts, you need to have an understanding of all the different art mediums. Some colleges and universities offer bachelor's degrees in Art Education, but I went to school first to study just art. I received my Bachelor's in Art from a program where I studied the basic fundamentals of art as well as photography, painting, drawing, figure drawing, sculpture, printmaking, bookmaking and art history. Then I went back to school for my Master's in Art Education where I learned all about how to teach art to children."
Mrs. Gottke: "When I was doing my undergrad degree, it was required that I have a comprehensive major in art and a minor in education to be certified to teach in grades K through 12. I also have a major in history and government and additional art courses towards a masters."
How did you get interested in becoming an art teacher?
Mrs. Kodsi: "Growing up, I thought I wanted to be a veterinarian because I love animals, but I really struggled with some of the math and science courses in college. After being frustrated, I talked to my advisor who had me brainstorm about all the things I liked and what I was good at. Art kept popping up on my list. I knew I loved it, was good at it, and I wanted it to be a part of my life so I changed my major to studio arts. After I graduated from college with my degree in Studio Arts I decided to volunteer in a High School Art program where I worked with two wonderful teachers who were inspiring. I wanted to be able to share my energy and enthusiasm about art with children and help spark their creative thinking, so I decided to go back to school for Art Education."
Mrs. Gottke: "I have always loved art and was that student 'who was the best artist in the class' in grade school. During middle school and high school, I took art courses every year and had some really great teachers. They inspired me to find my own solutions to problems and to be as creative as I could be. When I went to college, I started out as pre-law but soon realized I missed studying and creating art. I love helping students observe things around them, learn skills to help them draw and to interpret their feelings and ideas into works of art."
Do you have suggestions about the art program for Chesterbrook students?
Mrs. Kodsi: "Don't be afraid to use your imagination and try something new. A wiggly line can transform and become a beautiful piece of art. A mistake can turn into a masterpiece! Also, be sure to check out the Art Link under Specialists in Blackboard where you can find my 'recycled materials wish list', art news, homework, private art lesson information as well as museums and art websites.
Mrs. Gottke: "When you come to art, this is the time of the week when there is not one right answer. You will be challenged to come up with your own ideas and solution to the art problems we give you. Have fun trying new techniques, materials and ideas. Sometimes how the project looks when finished is important and sometimes just learning how to do new things is what is important."
What makes art fun for you?
Mrs. Kodsi: "I love the challenge of thinking differently and creatively. It's scary starting out on the blank canvas but every little mark sparks new thoughts and there are endless possibilities. The great thing about art is that everyone's work is different and there isn't just one way to create it!"
Mrs. Gottke: "Art teachers are very visual people so I'm constantly thinking about things I want to make. I can't imagine not wanting to learn about new materials or ways to use them and to be making something. I personally love to paint and do printmaking but one of my favorite things to teach is clay."
Tell us about yourself!
Mrs. Kodsi: "I was born in LaCrosse, WI, and raised in LaCrescent, MN. I have 2 sisters, and I love to make trips back home to Minnesota where my family lives. I love all kinds of art including architecture, and the art I make is mostly drawings, paintings and some photography. I love reading, gardening, traveling, cooking, going out to new restaurants, spending time with my husband, and playing with my two cats. This is my seventh year of teaching art in Fairfax County and I'm totally thrilled to be a part of the Chesterbrook family!"
Mrs. Gottke: "I was born in Ohio, grew up in Nebraska, went to college in Indiana and Arizona and then moved to the DC area. I have lived in McLean for 28 years, my husband, Bob is a CPA here and all three of our children have gone to school first at Churchill Road, then Longfellow or Cooper and graduated from Langley H.S. My oldest daughter graduated from William and Mary, my son from University of Tennessee and my youngest daughter is at Virginia Tech. I have been active in the PTA while my children were in school and in my 'free' time; I read, garden, paint and walk."
What community art programs does Chesterbrook participate in?
Mrs. Gottke: "MPArtfest is held in McLean Central Part the first Sunday of October and the local public and private schools send murals and approximately 10 paintings, drawings or collages to be displayed throughout the park. March is Youth Art Month (YAM) and every FCPS school participates in some type of art show. Since McLean has the Community Center and Emerson Gallery, we are able to use a professional space to mount an art show of elementary students' work the first two weeks of March. This show was started over 20 years ago by Betty Bott and every year the local elementary public school teachers spend two days arranging and displaying paintings, drawings, prints, murals, sculptures and clay pieces from Chesterbrook, Churchill Road, Franklin Sherman, Haycock, Lemon Road, Springhill and Westgate. Each school sends between 100 to 200 student works depending on the size of the school and it is wonderful to visit this exhibit. The following two weeks in March is the time when FCPS middle and high schools exhibit."

THE COUNSELING ADVISORY COMMITTEE |
Chesterbrook ES has formed a Counseling Advisory Committee (CAC) which is made up of counseling staff, teachers, and parents (students can participate too!) The purpose of the CAC is to learn what is effective about the counseling program and what needs to be changed. We are looking for feedback on lessons, groups, programs and anything else we do at the school.
The first quarter meeting was held on October 20th. Please click here if you are interested in viewing the October meeting minutes. The next meeting will be held from 1:15 - 2:15 on Monday, January 10th in the Open Pod next to the Counseling Room.
What we will do in subsequent meetings Each meeting we will review what we discussed last time, go over what we have been doing that quarter, ask for feedback and suggestions regarding the counseling program's effectiveness (what's working and what isn't) and discuss programs that will be run next quarter. Our slogan: Help us help you!
