Pertinent Points for the Week Ahead
from the Chesterbrook PTA
Issue: No.1 August 20, 2010
Welcome to our second Friday Digest of the new year! I have just a few items below about upcoming events and volunteer needs. We definitely need more help assembling school supply kits on Wednesday, September 1 and collating back to school folders on Thursday, September 2. These projects take many hands!

Also, please take the time this week to order your school kits, check your account accuracy on our website or create a new one, and join the PTA. Getting these things done earlier is helpful to us and gives you a shorter list for the rest of the summer!

A note about the PTA's annual Ice Cream Social following Open House at 3 pm September 3: This is not a drop-off event! Please stay with your child(ren) and catch up with other parents. And join us in welcoming new families to Chesterbrook. Thanks again to Ann-Marie Turnage for planning the event.

Enjoy these last few weeks,
Laurie Plishker
2010-2011 PTA President

To Do This Week
Order Your School Kits
Online sales of school kits are continuing. Please visit
Chipmunk Avenue on the PTA website for ordering information (you can join the PTA in the same order too). Kits include some hard-to-find items teachers request, as well as grade-specific items such as computer headphones (kindergarten), musical recorders (grade 3), and assignment notebooks (grades 3-6). Note: headphones, recorders, and assignment notebooks are available individually for families NOT purchasing kits--if you purchase a kit, you do NOT need to purchase these items separately. Kits will be delivered to your child's classroom during the first week of school. Thanks Lisa Richter and Eleanor Gollob! Contact Lisa and Eleanor with questions.
Volunteer for School Kit and Back-to-School-Folder Assembly
We need quite a few more volunteers -- please help out if you can!
  • Back-to-School-Folders contain lots of important information. The assembly line begins September 2 at 10:30 am. Longfellow students may receive volunteer service hours. Adults and teens may sign up here: Folder Assembly. For more information, contact Jackie Carney D'Aquila.
Join PTA and Register for Website Account
Did you know you can join the PTA online? Go to Chipmunk Avenue on the PTA website to pay your dues (you can do this in the same order as when you buy school supply kits). Why? Members get a free Family Directory (nonmember price is $8) and are already supporting our many enrichment programs the PTA delivers! Last year we achieved 100% percent membership -- let's try to match it.

In addition, a website account/profile gets you access to the password-protected areas of our website, including the online Family Directory. The directory is searchable by last name, teacher and even street address. Profile information forms the basis of the paper directory as well, and having it accurate now means the directory can be produced and distributed even earlier! Register for your account on the PTA website. If you already have an account, please log-in and click on My Account to check its accuracy.
Download Reflections Entry InformationReflections logo
Through the PTA Reflections Program parents and teachers can encourage students to explore their artistic talents in the areas of photography, literature, visual arts, musical composition, dance choreography and film/video production. We are hoping for a lot of participation this year, but your student can start thinking and creating his or her artistic entry this summer! Participation in this program can also promote social and organizational skills, as well as self confidence and self esteem. All Chesterbrook ES students who submit a Reflections Program entry will receive recognition for their work. Entry forms and rules for Reflections Program are available on the Virginia PTA website. For more information, contact Kristin Cabral. Thanks Kristin for organizing our Reflections program this year!
Get Ready for Great American!
The PTA has an exciting new catalog fundraiser this fall, Great American. The catalog features a wide variety of great and unique items, including beautiful jewelry, stationery, home products, gift wrapping, eco-friendly items, and so much more. Want a sneak peek? Visit the Great American website (School ID: 1874999). Thanks to Judy Williams for getting us started!
Volunteer for a PTA Leadership Position
Are you interested in getting more involved in school and PTA activities? The PTA needs your help in the coming year! Running a committee is a terrific way to learn more about what's going on at school and meet other parents. Please see our website for a list of the openings. For more information or if you are interested in something else, please contact Laurie Plishker so you can get connected to the right opportunity. In your Back to School Folder (distributed at Open House or on the first day of school) you'll find a Volunteer Opportunities form where you can indicate where else you'd like to help, even if you aren't chairing a committee. There's something for everyone and every schedule!
