The Friday Digest , Early August Edition Pertinent Points for the Week Ahead from the Chesterbrook PTA |
Issue: No.1

It's only the beginning of August, but school is right around the corner. Several PTA Committees have been working all summer to get ready for the school year. The PTA's annual Ice Cream Social following Open House is coming up September 3. Please join us after visiting your classroom to catch up with friends and make new ones over popsicles and the playground. Ice cream treats will be served beginning at 3 pm behind the school. Thanks to Ann-Marie Turnage for planning the event yet again!
A big THANK YOU to Holley Remer, Michael Kelchlin, and their administrative team for organizing, managing, and leading our fabulous SummerQuest program. And thank you to all our teachers for creating such fun camps! We had over 200 students participate in 44 camps in July and in one more week of Step-Up classes coming up in August.
Also, thank you to everyone who has volunteered to chair or support a PTA committee for the coming year (including some families new to Chesterbrook). Having such a talented group around me has made for a wonderful transition. That said, we still have some big holes to fill, including a web editor, Fun Fair co-chair, and a whole International Night Committee. Please see our website for a complete list.
I'm going to try to keep the Friday Digest focused on the pertinent points for the week (or month in this case) ahead. There will be a section on things you may need to do and one on upcoming events (see below). Periodically, we may have more information, but I will try to keep it succinct and directly tied to Chesterbrook. Longer articles and other news will be reported in the monthly Chronicle newsletter and on the website. I hope this will increase readership. If you have any ideas or comments about what to include or not include, I'd love to hear them!
And finally, I'd like to thank Greg Brandon for all of his work at Chesterbrook, particularly as PTA president for the last 2 years. He has set in motion a number of improvements to our PTA, not the least of which is this email, and put in countless hours at home and at school. Good luck to Greg in his next PTA adventures!
Enjoy the rest of your summer, Laurie Plishker 2010-2011 PTA President

Volunteer for School Kit and Back-to-School-Folder Assembly
It takes many hands to get ready for school!
- Back-to-School-Folders contain lots of important information. The assembly line begins September 3 at 10:30 am. Longfellow students may receive volunteer service hours. Adults and teens may sign up here: Folder Assembly. For more information, contact Jackie Carney D'Aquila.

Join PTA
Did you know you can join the PTA online? Go to Chipmunk Avenue on the PTA website and click on Membership to log in and pay your dues (you can do this in the same order as when you buy school supply kits). Why? Members get a free Family Directory (nonmember price is $8) and are already supporting our many enrichment programs the PTA delivers! Last year we achieved 100% percent membership -- let's try to match it.

Download Reflections Entry Information
Through the PTA Reflections
Program parents and teachers can
encourage students to explore their artistic talents in the areas of
photography, literature, visual arts, musical composition, dance
choreography and film/video production. We are hoping for a lot of participation this year, but
your student can start thinking and creating his or her artistic entry this
summer! Participation in this program can also promote social and
organizational skills, as well as self confidence and self esteem. All Chesterbrook ES students who submit a Reflections Program entry
will receive recognition for their work. Entry forms and rules for Reflections Program are available on the Virginia PTA website. For more information, contact Kristin Cabral. Thanks Kristin for organizing our Reflections program this year!

Volunteer for a PTA Leadership Position
Are you interested in getting more involved in school and PTA activities? The PTA needs your help in the coming year! Running a committee
is a terrific way
to learn more about what's going on at school and meet other parents. We have some critical jobs to fill (web editor, Chipmunk Avenue manager, particularly someone with some Drupal skills) as well as
some less time-consuming and skill-dependent opportunties (Chess Club assistant managers and FLEX program chair).
Please see our website for a list of the openings. For more information or if you are interested in something else, please contact Laurie Plishker
so you can get connected to the right opportunity. In your Back to School Folder (distributed at Open House or on the first day of school) you'll find a Volunteer Opportunities form where you can indicate where else you'd like to help, even if you aren't chairing a committee. There's something for everyone and every schedule!
