Welcome to the June issue of the Chesterbrook PTA Chronicle!

President's Remarks
What a fine community we live in, South McLean!  We "Southies"* take care of each other.  Heck, we take care of people we don't even know.

God forbid, anyone goes through a family crisis, but count on your Southie neighbors to help out best we can.

The Southie spirit goes to supporting the History Timeline Mural and Ceiling-Mounted Projectors.  And, supporting the fundraising projects that help pay for these things.

The PTA Board and Principal Fuqua, an honorary Southie, know how generous we Southie families are and take seriously our responsibility to sponsor Programs, Acquisitions and Grants that benefit the most children at the best price.

Walking into Clare's classroom this past month, I've had a strange sensation, aside from a little sadness.  Its the feeling one gets when one senses something is missing.  Indeed, something was missing:  the media cart was no longer in the middle of the room.  I could walk from the door to Ms. Dickerson's desk in a straight line.  Same thing with the ceiling-mounted projector in the cafeteria.

We did the reveal of the History Timeline Mural today during the Awards Ceremony.  It is truly a piece of art and instructional aide mashed together.  This is going to be a wonderful addition to the Library.  I have to recognize Melinda Mullet and Kim Johnson for making this possible.  Thank You!

It has been an honor serving our Southie families and Chesterbrook ES Staff and Faculty.  See you around campus!

Greg Brandon
Immediate Past President

*An unofficial and newly minted term of endearment.

Good Luck to Outgoing Chesterbrook Staff!!

Betty Bott-  (Art)  Betty Bott has been a very dedicated art teacher at our school for many years.    She has been with Fairfax County Schools for 36 years and at our school for over 28 years.  She has the most wonderful way of bringing out all of the artistic talent in our children.   Thank you to Betty for your time and commitment to our children and school community for so many years.

Karen Pearson- (TSPEC) We were very lucky to have Mrs. Pearson as a member of our Chesterbrook family for many years.  Her talent and expertise in the area of technology has helped build our school to be the great technology school that we are- thanks to her support.

Susan Scholla-  (3rd grade)Susan has been a very dedicated member of our Chesterbrook staff for over 12 years.  Her talent and creativity touched the lives of many students over the years.  We wish her the very best as she continues her great teaching career at a school closer to home in Fairfax County schools.

Erin Robinson- (6th grade) Erin has been with our Chesterbrook family for three years.  She quickly emerged as a wonderful, caring teacher and resource for her students in the sixth grade, as well as a great teaching partner to the members of the sixth grade team.  Thank you Erin, for making a great difference in the lives of our sixth graders.

Michelle Chang- (3rd grade) Michelle has been with our Chesterbrook family for five years.  She began her career with us as a dedicated special education teacher and then moved into the general education classroom with ease.  She has been a dedicated member of the third grade team, bringing a lot of energy and positive approach to her classes.   We extend her best wishes and are very excited for her as she prepares to welcome a new addition to her family this summer.

Kim Mason- (PE)    Kim Mason joined the Chesterbrook school community this year as a part time PE teacher.  She quickly became loved and honored by all of our children; for all that she brings to the physical education classroom and her love of sports, health, and fitness.  We wish her the very best as she continues her great career.

Carole Hellar- ( kindergarten) Carole Hellar joined us two years ago as an  instructional assistant in the kindergarten classes.   Carole has always been dedicated to helping her students feel successful in school.  We wish her the best as she moves on to pursue another opportunity in working with curriculum at another school.

Renee Gustafson-  (sixth grade) Renee has been a great member of our Chesterbrook community for over seven years.  She joined us as an instructional assistant and has been a dedicated teaching assistant for many teachers over the years.  We will always remember her for the way that she guides students to be successful in the classroom in a kind, gentle way.  We wish her well as she goes on to new opportunities in education and her career.

Kirby Hansen- (kindergarten) Kirby joined us this year as an instructional assistant in the kindergarten classes.  Her warm smile and friendly nature helped her build a wonderful rapport with her students who were just learning about school.  We wish you well Kirby!

 Condolonces to Mr. Le's Family

As many of you may have heard, our dear custodian Mr. Le, passed away a few weeks ago after a long illness.  He was a wonderful member of our Chesterbrook custodial team for over 18 years.   Anytime anyone in our Chesterbrook community needed a hand, we could depend on Mr. Le to assist us with kindness, compassion, and a wonderful sense of humor.  No one could ever match his quick ability to put together any type of furniture necessary for teachers or students, without directions!!   He performed his duties faithfully and made our building a beautiful place to be always.Recently, Mr. Fuqua presented Mr. Le's wife with his service certificate from Fairfax County schools for his 20 years of dedicated service in the county.  He will be deeply missed.  In the coming weeks, the school will be planting a tree dedicated in his honor.

School Supply Kits For Sale in August

The Chesterbrook PTA will once again offer families the ability to purchase School Supply Kits in August.  Thanks to Lisa Richter and Eleanor Gollob who have taken on this project for the 2010-2011 school year kits.  If you are interested in helping to buy supplies, sell or put these School Supply Kits together please contact Lisa Richter or Eleanor Gollob at schoolkits@chesterbrook.org.   The supplies will be put together into kits during the week before school starts.  Please come and help!

How and when can school supply kits be purchased?

You'll be able to purchase school supply kits and join the PTA online in August.   You'll also be able to purchase kits at the School Open House on September 3rd.  The PTA will send out an email with more details later this summer so please remember to update your contact information (particularly your email address) in the online Family Directory http://www.chesterbrook.org/FamilyDirectory so the PTA can keep in touch with you on this and other important news over the summer!

How are the items chosen for the school supply kits?

Everyone has their favorite products they use at home or at the office--items that are tried and true when used everyday.  Classrooms work the same way--there is a difference between Ticonderoga pencil and a generic pencil!

Why buy a school supply kit from Chesterbrook?

·         Uniform Supplies - Teachers ask for specific supplies for their classroom-- items that they have found year after year to help the classroom run efficiently and keep students organized.  The best way to ensure the teachers and students get exactly what they need is to buy your school kits through the PTA.

·         Time Savings - You can avoid shopping at several different stores to get your supplies--PTA provides them in one handy stop and delivers them right to the classroom!

·         Help Fund PTA Activities - School Supply Kits are a big fundraiser for the PTA. On behalf of the PTA, we work with vendors to get a school discount, buy in bulk and sort them ourselves!  We pass on the money saved to the PTA.  Kits cost about the same as if you bought the supplies yourself.

We hope you'll consider the PTA as your personal shopper for School Supplies!

Spring Book Fair
 a Big Success!!

Chesterbrook's First Annual Spring Book Fair was a great success! "Awesome!!," says Mrs. Moseley.  We grossed over $11,000 between the April Pre-Sale and June onsite Book Fair and raised nearly $3,000 for the library.  Mrs. Moseley will use some of the money raised from the two book fairs this year to buy laptops for the library to improve access to online resources for students. She will also be purchasing additional curriculum materials for teachers and more books for students.

This spring we tried out a new software application that Bookworm, our vendor, has developed. We were finally able to scan barcodes for ringing up purchases. It streamlined the administration end of the Fair, plus made check-out much quicker. We expect to see a significant improvement in waiting lines for checkout during the evening events at the Fall Fair. We are sorry we weren't able to do reorders of sold out items, but we'll have them back in the fall.

Enjoy your summer of reading and thanks for supporting Chesterbrook's Media Center!

Summer Quest FUN FUN FUN!

Now that school's out for the summer, if you find you're still on the hunt for something for the kids to do that is educational, safe, affordable, flexible, close to home and - most importantly - fun! - Chesterbrook's own Summer Quest program has all that and much more!

For three weeks, from July 12 to 30th, Chesterbrook teachers will devote their time and talent to teaching kids in a variety of subjects.  A non-consecutive fourth week is offered from Aug. 16-20 for "Stepping Up to First Grade" and "Stepping Up to 2nd Grade." This is a fantastic introduction to the grade level for new students or those who could use a "leg up" before the September.

Morning sessions go from 9 a.m. to noon and afternoon sessions are from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.  Most are half-day, single week classes, allowing you the flexibility to build a full day with multiple classes, or just take a half day if that suits your child's schedule better.

"Summer Quest is an excellent learning opportunity for both students and teachers to explore their personal areas of interest without the usual academic pressures of school," says Amy Vallath, 4th grade teacher and Summer Quest Photojournalism teacher. "The relaxed, investigative setting encourages questions, sparks imaginations and cultivates ideas in everyone. During the Photography course last summer, I was so pleased to watch the students' surprising talents emerge and to see the world through their eyes."

Summer Quest is not limited to just Chesterbrook students, so spread the word to your friends and neighbors. For complete class descriptions and to register, please check out the PTA website, www.chesterbrook.org.

PTA Reflections Program

By: Kristin Cabral

The PTA is presenting the "Reflections" program this fall.  It is a national competition that any Chesterbrook child may compete in any one of six categories: photography, musical composition, dance choreography, visual arts, film production, and/or literature.  The "Reflections" theme for next year will be "Together we can . . . ."  The PTA encourages all students to use this summer to prepare their "Reflections" projects.  More information about the competition will be sent home in the Thursday Folders in September.

For questions about this program, or if you wish to volunteer, or if you or someone you know is an expert in any one of these areas and can judge the children's submissions, please contact Kristin Cabral at 703-448-0944 or kriscabral@aol.com.
