President's Remarks
Unity By Cleo V. Swarat I dreamed I stood in a studio And watched two sculptors there, The clay they used was a young child's mind And they fashioned it with care. One was a teacher: the tools she used were books and music and art; One was a parent With a guiding hand and gentle loving heart. And when at last their work was done, They were proud of what they had wrought. For the things they had worked into the child Could never be sold or bought! And each agreed she would have failed if she had worked alone. For behind the parent stood the school, and behind the teacher stood the home!
Teacher Appreciation Week starts Monday, May 3.

DEADLINE EXTENDED to Friday, April 30!
Chesterbrook Spring Book Fair and PreSale
New this year, we are sponsoring a spring book fair and presale. This is a great opportunity to stock up on summer reading titles suggested by the experts at Bookworm and our very own teachers. The Pre-Order Form is divided by grade levels (please use your child's grade for next year) to help you make selections, though you may order from anywhere on the form. Please pre-order books to ensure Your books are available. Not all titles will be sold at the fair, and we will not do reorders for out-of-stock titles.
Complete the Pre-Order Form and return it to school with a check made out to "Chesterbrook PTA" by Friday, April 30. Orders will be available for pickup during the Spring Fair, June 2-4 in the library. At that time we will have a fresh selection of new titles, including games and activities, just in time for summer! While we will have some presale titles on sale during the Fair, they will be in limited quantities and we will not have time to do additional orders in June and receive them by the end of the year. Please preorder to ensure your books are available!
Please contact Laurie Plishker, lplishker@gmail.com, with questions or to help with the Fair. Also, we still need Library Shelvers for the rest of the year and are beginning to recruit volunteers for next year too! Contact Laurie for more information.
All profits from the Spring Book Fair go to the Chesterbrook Library. |
Chesterbrook PTA Funds Installation of Projectors Into Classroom Ceilings
A few years ago, the Chesterbrook PTA invested in presentation carts for the second through sixth grade classrooms. These multi-media carts allowed teaching staff to project interactive lesson plans, WCH-TV (closed-circuit TV), DVDs, instructional websites, PowerPoint presentations, Skype, etc. The classroom sound field systems also tie directly into the carts to help ensure that children throughout the classroom can hear the media. The PTA has just enabled Chesterbrook to improve upon the setup by mounting the projectors from the ceiling in 17 classrooms. This means that the cart does not have to be center stage which frees up classroom space, helps avoid shadowing since the student is no longer standing in the direct line of the projection image and removes a significant trip hazard in the classroom (see photos below).
Old configuration where New configuration where cart cart has to be in center of can be on the side of the class- classroom to project images room and images project from ceiling Given our success with this year's fundraisers, in May the PTA will present a motion to its members requesting that additional funds be allocated for Chesterbrook to complete this equipment transformation in the remaining homeroom classrooms, the conference room and the cafeteria. The estimated cost is $15,000 which includes retrofitting classrooms that already have the presentation carts plus outfitting the lower grade classrooms that do not currently have presentation carts. Check out what second grade teacher, Miss Barker, has to say about the installation of the ceiling-mounted projector which has been installed in her classroom.
"I am so excited that the projector has been mounted on my classroom ceiling! This small change has made a world of difference in my classroom. I now have the ability to use the projector at a moment's notice. Before, I had to plan time to move my student's desks and rearrange the room to use the projector on the presentation cart.
I have noticed such a change in my student's level of engagement. Because the projector is now so easy to use, I have been able to incorporate Mimio lessons into my every day teaching. The children love being able to come up to the board and actively participate in lessons. They are really excited to share their thoughts and ideas with classmates and show one another what they know. Mounting the projector has truly helped to create a more fun and engaging learning environment!"

Summer Quest: Fly Into Fun This Summer!
Still Not too Late to Register!
It's 8 weeks until summer, folks! If you're still on the hunt for something for the kids to do that is educational, safe, affordable, flexible, close to home and - most importantly - fun! - Chesterbrook's own Summer Quest program has all that and much more!
For three weeks, from July 12 to 30th, our very own Chesterbrook teachers devote their time and talent to teaching kids just about every imaginable subject. Check out these class titles - Cooking; Puppetry; Basketball; Soccer; Sports! Sports! Sports!; Computer Fun; Amazing Art, Scrapbooking; Let's Put on a Play (drama); Music Composition; Experimenting with Science; Engineering; Robotics; Video Making, Photojournalism: Poetry; Insect Safari, Summer Strings Spectacular, and many, many more.
A non-consecutive fourth week is offered from Aug. 16-20 for "Stepping Up to First Grade" and "Stepping Up to 2nd Grade." This is a fantastic introduction to the grade level for new students or those who could use a "leg up" before the September.
Now in its third year, Summer Quest offers classes for almost all ages, from incoming Kindergarteners to rising 7th graders. Morning sessions go from 9 a.m. to noon and afternoon sessions are from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Most are half-day, single week classes, allowing you the flexibility to build a full day with multiple classes, or just take a half day if that suits your child's schedule better.
"Summer Quest is an excellent learning opportunity for both students and teachers to explore their personal areas of interest without the usual academic pressures of school," says Amy Vallath, 4th grade teacher and Summer Quest Photojournalism teacher. "The relaxed, investigative setting encourages questions, sparks imaginations and cultivates ideas in everyone. During the Photography course last summer, I was so pleased to watch the students' surprising talents emerge and to see the world through their eyes."
Summer Quest is not limited to just Chesterbrook students, so spread the word to your friends and neighbors. But don't wait too long - classes are filling fast! For complete class descriptions and to register, please check out the PTA website, www.chesterbrook.org. Don't let the summer fly by!

From the Clinic: Seasonal Allergies
Seasonal allergies can be annoying at best, and for some people allergies dramatically interfere with daily life. Itchy, red eyes, sneezing, congestion and wheezing all make allergies hard to bear.
According to the NationalCenter for Health Statistics, 40 million Americans are affected by allergies caused by pollen and other allergens.
12 MOST COMMON SIGNS OF NASAL ALLERGY
- Nasal congestion
- Clear runny nose
- Itchy nose
- Crease across the top of the nose from constant wiping
- Excessive sneezing
- Itchy, watery, red eyes
- Dark circles under eyes
- Wheezing
- Persistent cough, often rattling
- Recurrent ear infections
- Recurrent colds
- Nighttime cough and nasal congestion
Two important things to note regarding these symptoms:
- While all of these symptoms can be signs of allergies, they can also be signs of the simple, common cold.
- Your child will often have two or more of these symptoms if allergies are present. For example, dark circles under the eyes without any nasal symptoms are probably not allergies.
- When in doubt about the cause, see your pediatrician about your child's cold/allergy symptoms.
- Please remember any student presenting with a fever of 100 degrees or higher will be sent home due to the possibility of an illness.
Please keep the school health room aide advised if your child has allergies and is taking medication for this at home. It helps us in the clinic to be able to differentiate between cold and allergies when taking care of your child at school. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mrs. Matammu in Chesterbrook Elementary's clinic at 703-714-8210 or by email at LRMatammu@fcps.edu.
