President's Remarks
Thank you for the great turnout for the PTA General Membership Meeting and Back-to-School Night this past Tuesday. It was great seeing everyone. Thanks for your votes to approve the 2008-2009 Financial Audit and the 2009-2010 Proposed Budget.
I would like to thank three Chairpersons for their beginning-of-the-school-year efforts that started off the PTA on the right foot:
· Holley Remer, Summer Quest Chair, for cheerfully managing the second year of our summer day camp, along with Russ Brown. As most of you know, Summer Quest is a school-PTA partnership that generates net revenues that are earmarked for the acquisition of school technology. The faculty and administration did an excellent job of expanding the class offerings.
· Kristen Tiscione, School Kits Chair (assisted by Jackie Carney D'Aquila) for managing the School Kits program. It is our first fundraiser of the year and provides a valuable service for parents, students, and teachers.
· Judy Williams, Sally Foster Chair, for bringing this excellent gift wrap and gift fundraising program to our parents. The online ordering system is a great way to participate in this program.
Open House was a great success thanks to:
· Kate Garcia, Back-to-School Folder Chair, for organizing the folder coordination.
· Beth Mahood, for helping people through the process of updating or creating their PTA Website accounts. This becomes the basis for our online directory and our paper edition of the PTA Family Directory (one free copy to all PTA members).
· Ann-Marie Turnage, Ice Cream Social Chair, for managing this fun treat that followed the Open House.
· And all of the volunteers who helped collate school kits and folders prior to the Open House and handled the sales of kits and memberships during the Open House.
Of course, my job was made easier by:
· My fellow PTA Executive Committee members: Gina Manning, Vice President, Membership; Kristin Cabral, Vice President, Fundraising; Laura Przypyszny, Treasurer; and Amy Hollingworth, Secretary, for their support.
· Betty Ende, Immediate Past President, for her continuing guidance and advice.
· Brigette Peterson, our Cultural Events Chairperson, who already has set up a great line-up of entertainment for the coming year. Please remember that PM Kindergartners, parents, younger siblings, and caregivers are always invited to these shows.
Please remember to register your grocery cards so that Chesterbrook Elementary School is credited. The General Mills Box Tops for Education, and Giant, Safeway, and Harris Teeter shopping cards send checks directly to the school - and the great thing about this: its corporate money based on your weekly shopping expenditures.
We still have a few PTA Chair positions to fill. Please see the article later in this newsletter for more information. Finally, thanks to everyone who filled out Volunteer forms and Room Parent forms. The response we received this year was excellent!

School Supply Kits
By: Kristen Tiscione
Thanks to all the Chesterbrook families who purchased PTA School Supply Kits this year. We have sold 492 kits for a participation rate of about 82%. Purchasing a school supply kit helps everyone - makes the parents' lives easier, allows the teachers to get the supplies they want and need, and provides much needed funds for PTA programs.
The following parents and students helped to assemble and sell the school supply kits: Allie Arnold, Nadia Boughanem, Clare Brandon, Greg Brandon, Allyson Burgess, Jennifer Clark, Grace Clifford, Jackie D'Aquila, Betsy Desmond, Tara Andringa Dunfee, Erika Eckrod, Betty Ende, Jennie Ende, Kate Garcia, Dana Giddens, Genevieve Glista, Amy Hollingworth, Meg Hunt, Kim Johnson, Anna Joss, Michelle Joss, Ann Liu, Ella Koehl, Elena Lagos, Gail Lively, Kaela Mahoney, Gina Manning, Stephanie Manning, Meagan McArthur, Hanna Park, Candy Penn, Laurie Plishker, Michael Robbins, Mashana Sangdee, Spencer Sims, Amy Spangler, Sarah Spulak, Joey Sullivan, Ann-Marie Turnage, Judy Williams, Anne Williams, Emily Williams, John Williams, and Mary Zwirb. Without their help, the job would never have been done so quickly. Thank you.
Thanks also to our PTA President, Greg Brandon, and Kurt Kohls for continuing to improve the PTA website and to make access to supply lists, on-line sales, PTA membership renewals, and volunteering so easy.
A huge thank you also goes out to Jackie D'Aquila, my co-chair, who managed Open House sales, and our PTA Treasurer, Laura Przypyszny, whose ability to keep track of and reconcile the dollars and cents of a project this complicated is inspiring!
Thanks to Ms. Jorgensen, Mrs. Wynne, Mrs. Kelly, Ms. Butler, Ms. Antignano, Mrs. Vallath, Mrs. He, and Mr. Brown for being the summer teacher contacts for school supplies and helping me navigate this process. I appreciated your responsiveness and assistance.
Finally, a very special thank you goes to Linda Barnard in the front office who, as always, was cheerful, considerate, and helpful with regard to this PTA effort. This is my last of 14 years at Chesterbrook, and I will miss her.
School Store
The school store was open the first 2 weeks of school. Many, many thanks to Betty Ende, Gina Manning, and Jennifer Clark for staffing the store.
The school store is closed for the remainder of the year. The PTA will be selling assignment notebooks, computer headphones, recorders, and other "unique items" throughout the year as long as supplies last. See items for sale posted on the store door. Please send any supply orders to kkt7@law.georgetown.edu. The supplies will be delivered to your child's classroom the following Monday. |
Summer Quest 2009 A Big Success!
By: Holley Remer
I had the pleasure of serving as the Director of the Summer Quest 2009 program at Chesterbrook. I am happy to report that the Chesterbrook's Summer Quest 2009 program was a great success! We offered 19 classes including lessons in art, reading and writing, gardening, puppetry workshops, bridge building, foreign language, skill building and remediation. Classes ran for one, two or three weeks. This year, we offered Summer Quest for five weeks: June 22 - 26; July 13 - 31 and August 10 - 14. More than 230 students attended classes during the five weeks. We added several new classes this year, including robotics, cooking, photography, science for younger students, physical education, a variety of math classes, and rising kindergarten/first grade classes to help acclimate new students to the school. Not only did the students and staff enjoy the classes, but we made $15,000 for Chesterbrook's technology program. A special thank you to everyone who made the program such a success. The program would not be as wonderful as it is without the top notch staff of educators here at Chesterbrook. Would you like to see a class offered at Summer Quest 2010? Please let me know.

In order to help us improve the program next year, in August the PTA distributed a survey to get feedback both from families who enrolled a child in Summer Quest as well as those who didn't enroll. We received some great suggestions on additional offerings that students would be interested in and also on logistical issues. We will work this fall to begin the evaluation process for schedule and class offerings for 2010. Our goal is to communicate information on SummerQuest 2010 by February 2010.
If you did not have a chance to respond to the survey but have feed- back, please forward it to summerquest@chesterbrook.org. Thanks for supporting Summer Quest! |
Sally Foster Update
By: Judy Williams
Thanks to all of you who have ordered products so far this season. As a reminder, BOTH paper and online orders are due on September 30th. Order online, save paper and get free shipping on all orders over $70. All online orders will be shipped directly to you.
Here are a few suggestions and reminders:
· If you're ordering via the catalog order form, please remember that all checks must be payable to Chesterbrook PTA, not to Sally Foster, that you should NOT SEND CASH and that you should return BOTH copies of the order form to us when you order. We will return the carbon to you in one of your order boxes. Families who retain their carbon copies frequently lose them, making it impossible to check their orders for accuracy. We will not provide a photocopy in place of your carbon copy.
· Orders will be ready for pickup on November 3 and 4. These are the days of fall parent-teacher conferences. Please plan to pick up your order when you meet with your child's teacher or stop by school another time during the week to pick up your order. Orders are generally quite bulky, making them impossible for a child to handle on a school bus.
· The order delivery area is FOR ADULTS ONLY. When orders are delivered, we sort them carefully by grade and teacher name so that you can more easily find your order when you come to pick it up. The best way to keep this area in order is to make it a student-free zone. We appreciate your understanding.
· When you pick up your order, be sure you pick up ALL the boxes in your order. If your order is large, it's especially likely to be in more than one box. And, if you order candy as well as wrapping paper, for example, those two items will be delivered in two boxes because food items are stored in and shipped from a different warehouse.
· Order changes and corrections will be due by Friday, November 14, which makes it important that you pick up and check over your order promptly. Change/correction instructions will be inside one of your order boxes.
· If you're new to ordering online, you need to register your child as an online seller at www.sallyfoster.com. Our account number is 503995. Be sure to jot down your child's seller ID number, as it will come in handy if you ask other people to order online and give your child credit. Also be sure to save the password that you choose, as it will be your password for all Sally Foster sales for years to come.
· If you registered your child and ordered online before, you'll need to know your password from previous years to update your seller account. If you don't remember it, don't worry. When your get into the Sally Foster website, you'll be able to ask them to send you your password.
· Past online registrants will need to update their student's information, including their homeroom teacher, which you can do by clicking on the "Account" tab at the top of the seller page.
· Even if you order online, your child's prizes will be delivered to school, so please try to pick them up when you come for your parent-teacher conference on November 3 or 4.
If you miss the September 30th deadline for the "official" sale, Sally Foster continues to give Chesterbrook PTA 50% of profit for orders placed until January 15, 2010. So if you find yourself suddenly short of holiday wrapping paper in early December, you can still get Sally Foster paper AND earn some funds for our school.
If you have questions or problems, please don't hesitate to contact Judy Williams 703.442.3984 or jandjwilliams@yahoo.com. |
Standards of Quality Hearing on September 30th
By: Greg Brandon
The Virginia Board of Education will hold four public hearings on September 30, 2009 to receive comment on the Standards of Quality Review. The public hearing closest to McLean will be held at West Potomac High School, Kogelman Theatre 6500 QuanderRd Alexandria, VA from 7 to 9 PM. Speakers are asked to limit their remarks to three minutes each. Speakers are also urged to provide a written copy of their comments. As noted on the FCPS website, the Standards of Quality set the minimum requirements that all school divisions in Virginia must meet, and by doing so help to determine the state's funding share for K-12 education. One issue under discussion is a possible cap on staffing for support personnel which could have a significant impact on the state's funding contribution to public schools. Click HERE To View A Powerpoint Presentation of the Summary of Results For 2009 Standards of Quality July 2009 Survey Instrument.
Standards of Quality Review
The 2009 General Assembly added language to Item 140 of the Appropriation Act requiring the Board of Education to review the SOQ and submit a report by November 1, 2009. Specifically, Item 140 states:
"The Board of Education shall review the current Standards of Quality to evaluate the appropriateness of the existing staffing standards for instructional positions and the appropriateness of establishing ratio standards for support positions, with the objective of maximizing resources devoted to the instructional program. The findings of this review, its associated costs, and its final recommendations for re-benchmarking shall be submitted to the Governor, the Chairmen of House Appropriations and Senate Finance Committees and the Joint Subcommittee on Elementary and Secondary Education Funding established pursuant to Item 1, paragraph H. of this Act no later than November 1, 2009." | |
Lunch Money Update
By: Susie French
Those of you who are new to Chesterbrook might be interested in how the lunch program works. Every student is given a lunch account number to use when purchasing a school lunch. The account works like a debit card and once the balance goes below THREE lunches, your child will be given a green sticker to wear home to remind you to immediately replenish your child's lunch account. Please be sure to remind your child to keep the sticker on and to give you the sticker when he/she gets home so you know to replenish his/her lunch fund. The cafeteria staff alerted me that stickers are sometimes found stuck to the table or put in the trash. I've included an example of the sticker so you know what to expect.
A great tool to help ensure your child's lunch account doesn't run out of money is a service available to all FCPS schools called mylunchmoney.com. This service allows parents to put money on their child(ren)'s lunch account through a secure online account and can be set to replenish the account automatically OR to send an email alert when the balance on the lunch account goes below a certain level. Parents can manage all their children's lunch cards through one mylunchmoney account, including any children who attend another FCPS school. This service also allows you to view a seven-day history of your child's lunch purchases, establish meal control settings, and set a daily or weekly spending limit for your child. Visit www.mylunchmoney.com to sign up. If you prefer to use the old fashioned method and send a check payable to "Chesterbrook Food Services" to the school cafeteria, ask your child to give the check to his/her teacher in an envelope labeled "Lunch Money". Be sure to include your child's name on the check!
In the event your child forgets his/her lunch and the lunch card account doesn't have any money, the PTA's Forgotten Lunch will temporarily fund your child's lunch. Isabel Mancilla, the cafeteria manager, tracks the name and date that a child uses this account. New this year, if you are funding your child's account with a check, please make it out to "FCPS Food Service" to replenish your child's lunch account and Isabel will reimburse the Forgotten Lunch Fund in the amount your family owes the PTA. Please note if you are using mylunchmoney and for some reason your child uses the PTA's Forgotten Lunch fund, you will need to reimburse the fund by writing a check to "Chesterbrook PTA" and sending it to school in an envelope marked "PTA's Forgotten Lunch Fund". |
PTA Reflections Program
By: Billie Feldhaus
The annual PTA sponsored Reflections Program offers students the opportunity to create original works of literature, visual art, music, dance, choreography, photography and film/video production for both fun and special recognition based on an annual theme. Chesterbrook students who participate in the Reflections Program will be honored at a reception and awards ceremony. In the past, FairfaxCounty has chosen many Chesterbrook students to receive Awards of Merit and Awards of Excellence.
This year's theme is "Beauty is..." Hurry and get started because all entries must be turned in by October 16, 2009.

Chesterbrook PTA Auction Committee Needed
The team consists of Overall Chair who recruits and leads auction team members in the school's online auction fundraising event; coordinates promotion of the auction to the donors and the bidders; and is the main point of contact with our cMarket.com vendor. Team members include Solicitations Co-Chair: (for people who love to get out of the house and "on a mission" Chesterbrook has an established list of previous auction donors, but always welcomes new business. This person will manage a small team of volunteers who will be assigned territories); Data Entry Co-Chair (for people who prefer to work from home. you only need a computer and internet access -- no special software is required); and Wrap-Up Co-Chair (for people who like to work from home AND get out of the house; position entails writing thank you letters to our donors and shipping items to winning bidders who do not live in the McLean area; shipping costs are paid by the winning bidder). Solicitation season starts in November. The online auction runs during the month before the Fun Fair. The PTA's online auction web service is cMarket.com. CMarket.com has excellent client support to help you make the auction a great success! Net profits account for approximately 25% of PTA fundraising program. For more information on this position, please contact Kristin Cabral at vpfundraising@chesterbrook.org. |
Health and Safety Committee Chair Needed
The Health and Safety Chair runs Health and Safety programs for Chesterbrook families and communicates health and safety information to families. Also, serves as the PTA's parent liaison with the Safe Community Coalition. SCC meetings are four times a year: October 8th, November 12th, February 11th, and May 6th. The SCC sponsors programming at all grade levels. Their hallmark programs include Sixth Grade Ethics Day, Middle School Forum, and the Teen Summit. Later this year, they will hold their 4th annual Cyber Summit and are planning a new program to highlight the protective factors which emerged from the 2008 Fairfax County Youth Survey. Many more ideas are percolating, but they need the input and involvement from parents at each school. If you are interested in more information on this position, please contact Greg Brandon at president@chesterbrook.org |
Library Committee Volunteers Needed
The Library Committee helps to shelve books and perform other support functions for Chesterbrook's Media Center. This is a great volunteer activity for parents of students new to Chesterbrook as it's a great way to learn more about the activities in the media center and in the school. You can choose your schedule! If you are interested in finding out more about the Library Committee, please contact Beth Lord at kinglord@cox.net. |
Hospitality Committee Members Needed
By: Kim Johnson
Do you like to bake and/or cook? How about decorating for parties? The Hospitality Committee does these things and has the added bonus of treating our Chesterbrook Staff with goodies and honoring them. An example of this was the dinner that the Hospitality Committee supplied for the staff on Back-to-School Night. The dinner was catered by Panera Bread. The staff all seemed to love it. There was plenty of good food and treats and it seemed to make the long day a bit nicer for them. One teacher told me that the dinner meant so much to her, because she didn't have to go out and get something to eat, or pack extra things for dinner. And another said that she doesn't get treated to dinner very often, so that dinner is extra special to her. It is rewarding serving the people who give so much to our children!
There are several other opportunities to be hospitable this year with the Hospitality Committee:
· Nov 11 Thanksgiving Lunch - decorating the cafeteria
· Dec 15 Holiday Treats for the Staff
· May 3 Staff Appreciation Lunch
· May 8 PTA Executive Board Breakfast
· June 15 Outgoing Staff Reception.
So if baking or cooking is something you enjoy, and you would like to be on a fun committee, please send me an email at kimjohnson5@gmail.com. I would also love to work with a committee co-chair who would be willing to be at all events to lend a hand. Please contact me if you want more information and to join in on the fun!
Thanks Panera Bread for helping us provide a delicious meal to
Chesterbrook Staff on Back to School Night! |
Have you seen the beautifully weeded and mulched beds at Chesterbrook? This garden maintenance is courtesy of Wheat's Landscape Company, Chesterbrook's new business partner. As part of the partnership, last spring Wheat's taught third graders about landscape design and then planted a beautiful red maple in honor of Arbor Day. They will continue to help clean up, prune and mulch the Chesterbrook property two times per year as well as provide bi-weekly weeding service in an effort to keep the landscape looking its best all year. This is a great service, because previously all grass cutting and landscaping was done by the Chesterbrook custodians who have their hands full with keeping the building clean and running smoothly. Thanks Wheat's!

Spotlight on Chesterbrook's Principal and Assistant Principal
By: Elizabeth Ende
This month, I interviewed Chesterbrook's administrative staff, Principal, Bob Fuqua, and Assistant Principal, Michelle Paper. Both are longtime Virginia residents. Mr. Fuqua joined the Chesterbrook staff as an Administrative Intern in 1999 and became the first full time assistant principal at Chesterbrook the next year. He is in his 11th year at Chesterbrook. Prior to that, he worked for many years in Virginia as a music teacher in Winchester and Culpeper Counties and later as a GT teacher in Fauquier and Fairfax Counties. He has a bachelor's and master's degree in music and has completed post-graduate work in curriculum and administration leading to endorsements in Gifted/Talented Education and in Administration. In the spring of 2005, Mr. Fuqua took over the job of principal of Chesterbrook. Three years ago, he introduced the Level IV, GT program to Chesterbrook so that our students could participate in this program without having to leave their base school. His innovative approach has allowed students in grades three through six who are not designated as eligible Advanced Academic Level IV students (formally known as GT students) to take one to three Level IV classes in the areas where they have particular strengths.
With funding assistance from the PTA, Chesterbrook has implemented cutting edge technology under Mr. Fuqua's direction including: the presentation carts, skype, podcasting, and classroom sound fields. Last year, Mr. Fuqua brought the Chinese FLES program to Chesterbrook which brings Chinese language education to first through third grade students for one hour each week. Mr. Fuqua worked with his staff to win a Teacher Leadership Development Grant to put in place enrichment and intervention programs. The grant was also instrumental in starting the Summer Quest program, which is now run by the PTA. Mr. Fuqua is currently working with the Falls Church Water Authority to develop an outdoor garden for our students to help build and use for many years to come.
Mrs. Paper taught for six years in other Fairfax County Schools prior to coming to Chesterbrook and then taught at Chesterbrook for six years. She was a coach for new teachers to Fairfax County schools for eight years. She was promoted to assistant principal in the Spring of 2006. She is also a proud Chesterbrook graduate! She is in her 16th year of working in the public schools. She is also recently married as of April 4, 2009. Mrs. Paper has a bachelor's degree in English and a Master's Degree in Education from George Mason University, as well as an administrative endorsement from the University of Virginia. Mrs. Paper has assisted Mr. Fuqua in many different areas of the school including leading the development of the Positive Behavior Support Program, the start of the math/science lab, and the homework club. Chesterbrook holds a very special place in her heart.
Please read on to learn more about Mr. Fuqua and Mrs. Paper including: their favorite part of the job; their favorite books and food; and their advice on how to be successful at Chesterbrook. |
What is your favorite thing about working at Chesterbrook?
Mr. Fuqua: "I love working with the talented teachers and the very close dedicated community that surrounds the school. We have such wonderful families that support and help our committed staff each and every day. I love being with the children and seeing them grow and change during the year. I enjoy creating ways that the staff and I can reach individual learners and move them toward higher achievement in their academics while providing a safe caring and nurturing environment. We are so fortunate to have the many resources we have due to our county and our giving and caring staff and community."
Mrs. Paper: "My favorite things about being an assistant principal at Chesterbrook is visiting the students and teachers in the classrooms, helping to plan for staff development for the teachers, and working with all of the wonderful Chesterbrook families."
What is your favorite book?
Mr. Fuqua: "I love reading professional books and books for entertainment. My favorite two books are Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth and World Without End."
Mrs. Paper: "My favorite book so far is The Kite Runner, but it is ever changing. I also love mystery/suspense novels and books about travel."
What is your favorite food?
Mr. Fuqua: "I love most all foods, however, deserts are my favorite. Pecan Pie is my most favorite."
Mrs. Paper: "I love food! All food! I especially enjoy eating and cooking Italian food."
Do you have advice about how to be successful at Chesterbrook?
Mr. Fuqua: "Always make yourself available to learn new things. Take advantage of the wonderful teachers here at our school and all of the materials and equipment that we have available here at Chesterbrook. Always be positive and make the best of any situation that you find yourself facing. Like our former principal Jane Rice always said (and you will still hear it on our morning news show) "Have a great day or not, the choice is yours!"
Mrs. Paper: "The outstanding teaching staff has so many wonderful things to offer all of the children. Please take advantage and find out about all of the positive things/great programs that we do for the children. Also volunteers are welcome and make such a difference in our school." |
Calling All Candids
We know we've got lots of great photographers at the school - get your photos in the yearbook! If you find you got some nice shots of the kids in the classroom, be sure to share it with the Yearbook Committee. Keep the yearbook in mind as the kids have class parties, go on field trips and do wacky things with their hair.
Send your candids to yearbook@chesterbrook.org. The more photos we have, the more we'll have to choose from when it comes time to put the yearbook together. |
Want a Good Home for your Extra Recorders?
By: Elizabeth Ende on Behalf of Brownie Troop 1113Brownie Troop #1113 is working on a service project to collect recorders for Stanton Elementary School in Anacostia. Stanton's music class was eliminated this year. They are working with the Girl Scout Troops to fill this void through Bronze, Silver, or Gold Projects and music themed classroom presentations on Teacher Workdays or early release Mondays. Brownie Troop #1113 is assisting with this effort through a collection of plastic recorders that students no longer need. As background, Stanton Elementary is located in economically disadvantaged Ward 8 in Southeast DC. Nearly 90% of the 375 students currently attending (Headstart-5th grade) qualify for the free lunch program.
Recorders can be left in a marked collection box across from the Media Center. Stanton students thank you! Questions can be sent to Elizabeth Ende at eende1@gmail.com
