Hormone Cottage Happenings

I love what I do! Can I just say how gratifying it is to see women get better with our customized hormone replacement therapy? I love being a part of the whole process and watching them heal, feel good again, and experience joy in their life again. I call this "zest for living," and it is amazing to watch women get that back, after having felt so badly for so long. I also have to brag about 3 life-changing events that have occurred since we opened the cottage a little over a year ago, that I am taking full credit for (!):
1) Linda Lee, one of our first clients, came back to visit us at a recent Happy Hormone Coffee Hour and we could not believe the transformation! She has gone from a size 14 to a size 4 in one year and looks incredible! She feels balanced, happy and loves life again.
2) Lori got an engagement ring from her longtime boyfriend, Dave. Before she started our therapy back in the spring, she said they fought a lot and weren't really getting along. 5 months later, she stops by the cottage to show us her engagement ring! I asked if she wanted me to be the flower girl at her wedding !!
3) Jessica, age 31, who had a serious progesterone deficiency and severe thyroid issues that were preventing her from conceiving, became pregnant in July. She is due in March. I'm thinking the least they can do is name that baby after one of us at the cottage!  :) We are taking credit for this one!

I also get emails all the time from our women who are making great progress. Recently, Debbie wrote that she has lost 35 lbs since starting her therapy earlier this year and couldn't be happier. She says that it feels so great to be balanced and feel good about herself again. Karen wrote to brag that she has joined our Happy Hormone Cottage/Holten Wellness Center program where she trains with a personal trainer at the Holten Wellness Center twice a week and has lost 10 lbs in 5 weeks and 5% body fat! She is thrilled! Matt Holten and Angie Baber from Holten have developed a program for our cottage clients, where they can join a class of 6 that is offered at several different times through-out the week, WITH a personal trainer twice a week for $40 a month! How incredible is that? And our women are seeing results! Getting that cardio heart rate up is critical! By the way, you can see these comments and others like it on the testimonial section of my website. Check them out at

WE ARE INVADING CINCINNATI!!

I am pleased to announce that the Happy Hormone Cottage is moving into Westchester! Starting mid-October, we will be working at Dr. Diatte's office at Beckett Ridge Family Practice on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10-4:30. We will do the same thing we do at our cottage in Centerville: listen to women, respect and validate their story, offer hope AND a strategy for their natural hormone balance. All of these services we provide free of charge, as our passion is simply helping women and men recover from a hormone imbalance with customized natural hormone therapy. I will continue to work out of Dr. Diatte's facility once a week handing out therapy to our clients when it is ready. Clients can either call the cottage at 513-444-6343 to schedule a consultation at Dr. Diatte's office OR they can go online to www.happyhormonecottage.com/begin_your_journey.htm to schedule an appointment. We have tentative plans in February to be in Westchester full time. Our commercials will be airing daily on Channel 12 during the Dr. Oz and The Doctors shows starting November 3 AND we will be on 2 radio stations! You may even find us on a billboard or two in the Cincinnati area. I am really excited about offering our services to women and men in Cincinnati. I had a woman travel from Cincinnati to my Happy Hormone Hour at our Piqua Medicine Shoppe in September and tell me that we are desperately needed in the area. The options that are currently available to address hormone imbalance issues in Cincinnati seem to be quite costly and somewhat limited. At the Happy Hormone Cottage and our Piqua Medicine Shoppe, we offer free consultations and a successful 3-step program with life-long follow ups (all free-we donate our time) AND our customized therapy is compounded in-house. So that makes US accountable for your hormone balance at every step of the way on your journey. We walk the walk of natural hormone balance and show our passion for women (and men) by letting our actions speak for themselves.

THE NEXT STEP

Finally, I want you to think about this: WHY IS IT THAT ONCE WE ARE FINISHED WITH MENOPAUSE....THAT IS THE TIME WHEN WE MOST NEED NATURAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT? Because when your body ages and is depleted of hormones, your body is ripe for disease: breast cancer, dimentia, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular disease. By balancing your estrogen with natural progesterone, we can reduce your risk of breast cancer. By replacing your depleted estrogen levels with customized estrogen therapy (which means we have to check your levels first!) we can protect your brain from dimentia and your heart from heart disease and stroke. By replacing depleted testosterone levels with customized testosterone, we can build strong new bone to prevent osteoporosis.  Drug therapy is not the answer, nor does it make sense to me. You have to get educated in this area and become empowered to take charge of YOUR journey. You have to have CONVICTION about what you are doing and WHY. This begins first by realizing that your health care professional was taught drug therapy in medical school, so natural options may not be familiar. What isn't familiar may not be endorsed. But does that make it a bad thing? Just because a person isn't familiar with a certain concept or set of options, doesn't make it wrong. If that was the case, we would still operate under the theory that the world is flat! If you are willing to do the work and required reading necessary to get educated (go to my website; read Ageless by Suzanne Somers; read Natural Hormone Balance by Dr. Uzzi Reiss; read Adrenal Fatigue by James Wilson), you will have a better chance of dialoguing with YOUR practitioner about the best options for YOU. If your practitioner still isn't willing to listen, there are others out there for you who WILL listen. I urge you to NOT settle for anything less. YOU deserve all that life has to offer and that includes taking your power back.

See you at the Cottage.

Warmest Regards,
Lyn

PROGESTERONE vs. PROGESTIN:
The choice may affect your risk of breast cancer

3 women   Progesterone is a naturally occurring hormone in women. In the 1970's, following a surge in the use of Conjugated Equine Estrogens to treat symptoms of menopause, there was a corresponding rise in the incidence of endometrial cancer (cancer of the lining of the uterus).  It was found that by adding progesterone to estrogen therapy, endometrial cancer could be prevented. However, in the 1970's, progesterone was not available in a form that was well absorbed orally or transdermally, so pharmaceutical manufacturers developed and patented the first synthetic progestin (progesterone derivative), medroxyprogesterone acetate. Later, micronized progesterone was developed and the small particle size facilitates better absorption, so now, women can receive progesterone instead of a synthetic progestin as part of their hormone therapy. While both progesterone and synthetic progestins protect the endometrium, most literature demonstrates physiological differences in their effect on breast tissue. Also, studies have shown that women prefer progesterone to synthetic progestins, and report fewer side effects with progesterone.

In addition, there are physiologic differences between synthetic (non-bio-identical) progestins and "natural" bio-identical progesterone. For example:

Progesterone:
· induces death of breast cancer cells (apoptosis).
· Can reduce the risk of breast cancer by inhibiting estrogen-stimulated proliferation of breast epithelial cells.
· has receptors in many vital areas of the body, and has beneficial effects on the heart, brain and bone. Therefore, progesterone is also needed by women who have had a hysterectomy (ie, progesterone has many other purposes besides decreasing the risk of endometrial cancer).

Progestins:

· are anti-apoptotic, which means they do not cause cancer cells to die.
· may significantly increase estrogen-stimulated breast cell proliferation, which can contribute to the development of breast cancer.

In a study of over 80,000 postmenopausal women, the following breast cancer risk was observed:
Women who used estrogen only were found to have a 29% increased risk of breast cancer compared to women who had never used Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
Women who used estrogen plus a synthetic progestin were found to have a 69% increased risk of breast cancer compared to women who had never used HRT
Women who used estrogen plus progesterone were found to have no increased risk for breast cancer

"These findings suggest that the choice of the progestagen component in combined HRT is of importance regarding breast cancer risk; it could be preferable to use progesterone."  (Progestagen - also spelled progestogen - is the class of hormones that includes progesterone and progestins.)
Breast Cancer Res Treat. 2008; 107(1):103-111.

The Developmental Endocrinology Branch, National Institutes of Health, had previously shown that the addition of natural testosterone (not METHYLtestosterone) to conventional hormone therapy for postmenopausal women does not increase and may indeed reduce the risk of breast cancer.
Menopause. 2004 Sep-Oct;11(5):531-5.

A study of the influence of topically administered estradiol and progesterone on human breast tissue concluded that progesterone administration decreases estrogen-induced breast cell proliferation by 400%.
Fertil Steril. 1995;63(4): 785-791.

We work together with physicians and nurse practitioners and their patients to customize Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy in the most appropriate dose and dosage form for each woman. We will be happy to answer any questions.
