Greetings! |
HAPPY WINTER!
I hope you are all staying healthy this winter and taking care of yourselves, so you can take care of your families! Be sure to put yourself back on your own list! I am trying to take that advice myself! With the airing of my tv commercials, we are really busy at the cottage! It is so gratifying to be able to sit down with women and listen to their story, validate them and guide them on their journey to natural hormone balance. The stories I hear are sometimes very touching: for some it is the years of not feeling well and struggling to find someone, anyone to listen and help; years of going from doctor to doctor to try to find answers; and the hopelessness. When we actually sit down and begin to take measures to find the CAUSE of the issue(s) with the hormones, thyroid and adrenal glands and we begin to TREAT that cause with natural products, it is life-changing! During this journey, it has really become apparent to me that, for the most part, the medical community is really just interested in band-aiding your symptoms. It is the rare doctor who takes the time and effort it requires to actually dig deep to find the cause of the issue and to treat that. It is just easier to drug their clients. And, again, doctors know what drug reps tell them, so in the end, your symptoms are masked; the cause is never really addressed; and the drug community becomes richer. It just makes me more determined to do everything I can to use natural, holistic products whenever I can and to continue to find the cause of the issue and to address that. I know I am worth that investment of time and energy and so are you!
Case in point, I overheard a comment that made my hair stand straight up! A woman was talking about a recent bone density test and how an acquaintance found out that she has osteopenia (that slippery slope on the way to osteoporosis!), so her doctor recommended she increase her dosage of calcium. First of all, calcium is a mineral and she is NOT calcium deficient...she has bone loss. So "upping" her dosage of calcium may help a little, but it's not going to signal the osteoblasts to make more bone. Hormones do that! It is the role of estrogen and testosterone (and researchers also suspect progesterone plays a part in bone density) that build bone. So when women reach their middle-years and begin to produce less hormones, this compromises bone density and many women find themselves on the road to osteoporosis. The beauty of replacing your hormones in your middle years with natural compounded hormone therapy that is customized for you based on your hormone levels, is that it rebuilds bone-thus increasing bone density and putting your bone density levels back in the normal range. I can speak from personal experience with osteopenia at the age of 49, the lack of benefit from current "bone building drugs" on the market (they actually make bad bone!!) to my journey to natural hormone replacement. Six months from the date I began using my natural hormone therapy, my bone density scan came out in the low-normal range- a far cry from the osteopenia readings I had been getting earlier! To add insult to injury, this same woman went on to say that HER doctor told her that she should never use hormone replacement therapy and that even a broken bone (hip perhaps??) is better than the risk of HRT. THIS is probably the singular most ridiculous statement I have ever heard a practitioner make. It shows total ignorance of the subject matter. Since when is it ok to lump all HRT under one umbrella and label it all bad? I understand that Premarin and Prempro-the synthetic drugs of choice are bad, bad, bad. (whoever thought giving a woman horse pee in the first place and having the FDA actually approve it was wacked!) But to lump the synthetic drugs with BHRT and natural compounded hormone therapy is just ignorant AND quite frankly, wrong. If YOU have a doctor saying this to you, it is your job to get a second opinion. Even better, in this area of women's health, where the waters are muddy and confusing, it is up to each woman to educate herself, ask the tough questions, do the research and choose the right path for her. Let's focus on the CAUSE of the symptoms (i.e.bone loss) and take a holistic path, shall we, instead of a "let's drug you and band-aid your problem" approach that is so popular among most practitioners today. Become empowered! Take charge of YOUR journey!
By the way, we have introduced a few new features on my website. We now have an FAQ section, a blog, (would love to hear your comments and respond!!) and a "Practitioner Resource" section in our "Recommended Readings" category, so if YOUR doctor would like to get information and education on natural hormone balance, we have lots of clinical studies and reports s/he can read! Check it out on www.happyhormonecottage.com.

Health Tip: Progesterone Cream May Enhance Skin Elasticity and Firmness |

For many years topical progesterone has been prescribed as an anti-aging and skin-firming treatment. A well-designed study evaluated the effects of 2% progesterone cream on function and texture of the skin in peri- and postmenopausal women, while also measuring skin elasticity, skin hydration, and blood hormone levels. The researchers reported that after 16 weeks, women who applied progesterone cream had a significant improvement in skin elasticity and firmness, but the benefit did not occur in the group that used a similar cream without progesterone. The 2% progesterone cream showed consistent superiority over the cream base alone in counteracting different signs of aging in the skin, such as wrinkles. Although the progesterone was well absorbed, it did not significantly raise blood levels of the hormone. No serious side-effects of the treatment were observed.

Nutritional Support: Magnesium |
Magnesium is a mineral that is needed for proper muscle, nerve, and enzyme function, and is essential for good health. Medication conditions related to magnesium deficiency include hypertension, heart arrhythmias, diabetes, osteoporosis, migraines, premature ejaculation, premenstrual syndrome, and insomnia. Appropriate supplementation should consider the quality of the supplement including how much of that form of magnesium is absorbed by the body, as less absorbable forms can cause diarrhea. Other drug therapy should be reviewed by the pharmacist to be sure that medications do not interact with magnesium prior to supplementation. Ask our pharmacist which form of magnesium will best suit your needs.
