HAPPY OCTOBER!
We've been busy here at the cottage this past month. It is so gratifying to be doing what we are doing. I love making a difference in our women's lives! We've had two awesome Happy Hormone Hours this past month. The first one with Jim Paoletti of ZRT Labs was well attended and well-received, with women being given the opportunity to listen to an expert in bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, and then being given the chance to ask questions on top of that was terrific! The second Happy Hormone Hour we did just last week at the Harmony Farm Retreat Center in Tipp City. We had a great time talking with women over wine and hors' douevres, listening to their personal stories, and answering lots of questions. We were blessed to have with us two nurse practitioners from Dr. Stephen Guy's office in Vandalia, who helped us answer questions and clarify issues. A big thank you goes out to Lisa Mix,CNM and Margie McCarthy, CNM.
Our Happy Hormone Coffee Hour met for the first time in late September, and the women who attended wanted to keep it going. So we had another coffee hour on October 7 and plan to meet again on Wednesday, October 28 at 11:00 a.m. at the Unique Celebrations Gathering Room, right next to the cottage. This is open to everyone, so please feel free to join us. It's a great chance to meet other women who are experiencing similar issues, and then to dialogue with them, share experiences and build friendships. This really has become the highlight of my week, so I can't wait to meet again!
We are excited to introduce Robin Gentry, holistic health counselor, into our little cottage! She will be here starting Thursday, October 15 from 11:00-12:30 and then will be available at the same time every other Thursday. We are planning a series of mini-workshops entitled, "Heathy Habits, Healthy Living," where a small group of women can join Robin for information and education on everything from nutrition to cancer prevention to toxins in the environment. There will be a nominal fee for Robin's expertise. Email her at jstgrtfoog@aol.com for information or to sign up.
Finally, I'm getting ready for my speaking engagement at the ZRT Lab's National Convention in Orlando, Florida.  Patti Storey, RPh (and my marketing guru), and I will be doing an interactive presentation on "Successful Marketing Tips.....Come Join Us for a Happy Hormone Hour."  We hope to get more doctors on board with what we do and to let them know that our motivation of helping women regain natural hormone balance truly is rewarding.

Until next time, have a blessed month!

Warmly,
Lyn
Fighting off the Cold and Flu by Strengthening Your Immune System:
The Role of Quality Nutritional Supplements

H1N1 (also known as "swine flu") is a new influenza virus that was first detected in people in the United States in April 2009. This virus was originally referred to as "swine flu" because laboratory testing showed that many of the genes in this new virus were very similar to influenza viruses that normally occur in pigs (swine) in North America. But further study has shown that this new virus is very different from what normally circulates in North American pigs. You may have the flu if you have some or all of these symptoms:
· fever (not everyone with flu will have a fever)
· sometimes diarrhea and vomiting
· runny or stuffy nose, cough, sore throat
· body aches, headache
· chills, fatigue

Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people. Most people with 2009 H1N1 have had mild illness and have not needed medical care or antiviral drugs and the same is true of seasonal flu. However, some people are more likely to get flu complications, such as children younger than 5, people 65 and older, pregnant women, and people who have weakened immune systems or have cancer, lung disease, diabetes, or chronic disorders such as heart, kidney or liver disease. Also, it's possible for healthy people to develop severe illness from the flu so anyone concerned about their illness should consult a health care provider.  The seasonal flu vaccine is not expected to protect against the 2009 H1N1 flu. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has issued guidelines for the 2009 H1N1 vaccine (www.cdc.gov).

Proper nutritional support can strengthen your immune system. The following supplements may help to reduce your risk of infection, as well as shorten the duration of symptoms if you do get the flu or a cold:

Vitamin C
Zinc
Echinacea
Goldenseal
Elderberry extract
Astragalus
Beta 1,3 glucan
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)
Vitamin D3
Probiotics

Ask our professional staff to recommend a quality nutritional supplement.

In addition to fortifying your immune system, take everyday actions to stay healthy, such as covering your nose and mouth when you cough and sneeze, washing your hands often, and avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth which promotes germ spread.

Tamiflu® Shortages - There are concerns that need may exceed supply and that there may be shortages of the commercially available pediatric suspension of Tamiflu®, which is a prescribed for more serious cases of H1N1 and seasonal flu. If a shortage does occur, we can help by compounding the unavailable medication (such as a suspension for children).

Our compounding pharmacy makes it easy to take your medicine, with customized dosage forms like lozenges and lollipops, medications in topical and transdermal creams and gels which can be absorbed through the skin, and flavored suspensions to please even the most tempermental palate!
